On the 21st and 22nd November, the Public Broadcasting Services will be hosting the 2014-2015 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest at the Marsa Shipbuilding. 20 acts will be taking centre stage, in hope of representing the country at next year’s edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, being held in Vienna, Austria. Over the next couple of weeks, escflashmalta.com will be publishing a series of interviews with all the participants. Whilst thanking the Public Broadcasting Services for this opportunity, Let’s continue and follow things up with L-Aħwa.
Would you kindly introduce your entry to our readers and also identify the meaning behind the lyrics?
‘Beautiful to Me’ is a light, positive song with a cheerful beat and a tune which makes it easy to sing along to. The lyrics are quite straightforward. As the title itself implies, it’s a song about being beautiful to someone who cares about you, even when things might not always be going your way. There’s a sense of genuinity in the simplicity of the lyrics, and this makes it so easy to sing them from the heart. This song somehow reflects the light-hearted fun we share together both musically and in general.
In Malta, the Eurovision Song Contest is considered to be a major outlet for the music industry, and you stand here as one of the semi-finalists. What does the whole experience mean to you?
We had thoroughly enjoyed ourselves being part of the experience in Malmö when Gianluca represented Malta in 2013, so the Eurovision brings us many fond memories. Participating again, together this time, gives us another opportunity to enjoy performing together, and we’re doing it purely for the fun of it. Since we all have different professions and we don’t see each other much during the day (although we often communicate), rehearsing for a music event and the eventual performances allow us to share some great unforgettable moments together as siblings.
Recently, Malta has been rather successful at the Eurovision Song Contest, making the final on four of the last five participation attempts. What do you think is the reason for this success, and do you believe that your entry has what it takes to continue this positive trend?
There has definitely been a great team behind the Maltese representative in these past years … and we’ve been lucky enough to experience their professionalism.
If you were given the opportunity to sing another one of the competing entries in the 2014-2015 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, which one would it be and why?
We will be happy to offer to sing Daniel Testa’s song, ‘Something in the Way’, since he will be busy singing ours! :p It’s a great song with a funky beat!
Do you have any plans to release more music in the future, and do you have any particular projects in the pipeline?
We’ve been singing together for quite a while and plan to continue doing so. This has already been quite an eventful year with projects such as Rockestra, Kelma Kelma u Nota Nota, and we have also produced our own concert last March in honour of our grandfather’s legacy, since he was also a popular lyricist during the 50s and 60s.
