L-Għanja tal-Poplu committee has faith in the abilities of authors, composers, and local artists that they will stand up to be counted in the face of adversity. In light of the present situation, the Covid-19 pandemic which has wrecked havoc on the world, they have not given up hope, and will still be offering a platform whereby artists will create, and promote high quality songs in the Maltese language. The aim of the festival is that the best songs from those submitted, will be chosen and presented on television.
The 44th edition of L-Għanja tal-Poplu will be taking on a different format than usual, with the finalists all getting the distinct opportunity of recording a high quality music video, with the production team at the Public Broadcasting Services putting on a televised festival, which will come to an end with the results, and the presentation of the trophies.
In a novelty move, all songs are to be submitted in raw form, whereby no more than two instruments are meant to accompany the voices in the backing track. This will be the manner in which the first jury will listen to the songs, with the aim of focusing intensely on the subject matter, and the lyrical value of the songs. Once a shortlist of 40 is compiled, the participants will be asked to submit another version of their shortlisted songs, with the accompanying production which they anticipate will be as close as possible to the one during the final, should the songs get to that stage. From here on end, a second panel of judges will listen to the songs, and pick the best 16 songs which will then go onto be presented to the general public.
