In recent years, the Malta Eurovision Song Contest has been the only local platform for songwriters and vocalists to produce original songs in English, but that has officially changed with the re-introduction of the Summer Hit Song Contest which returns to F Living as from the 14th July 2014. A total of 18 entries got through to the final stage of the competition with no less than 8 of them having already made it to the top of the music scene by virtue of reaching the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on at least one previous occasion.

We're going to chat to ALL the artists in contention so that you, our readers will have the opportunity to get to know them better. The thirteenth artist in our series of interviews is Danica Muscat, and the song which she is presenting bears the name "Fearless" composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Gerard James Borg.

In Malta, the Eurovision Song Contest is a major outlet for the music industry, but then again, with such a mindset, what role does the return of the Summer Hit Song Contest have in your opinion and would you like it to be part of the music calendar?

Initially, when I heard that the Summer Hit Song Contest was going to return, I thought that it would be the best platform for my comeback, having taken time off from the local music scene to focus on a number of personal issues. It's role is vital in my opinion, noting that Malta was very much lacking competitions in English, apart from the Malta Eurovision Song Contest. Honestly, I hope that it stays put for more years.

Danica, you were the first individual from Malta to achieve success on foreign soil when it comes to foreign talent shows. Looking back at your experience in “Io Canto”, what did you keep in mind as you continue your journey in the music industry?

Firstly, I am immensely proud with regards to the individuals who are achieving success in shows such as "Io Canto" and "Ti Lascio Una Canzone", because they are letting the world know that Malta is full of talented vocalists. My experience was surreal, having had the opportunity to perform with Ornella Vanoni, Ron and Pierdavide Carone apart from also being the opening vocalist in the opening theme song. I cannot begin to describe the feeling that "Io Canto" gave me, leaving me speechless but yearning to succeed on a local level, hence why I continue to perform and share my talent.

Would you kindly introduce your entry to our readers and also identify the meaning behind the lyrics?

"Fearless" is a ballad, composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Gerard James Borg. It has a very strong message to which everyone can identify with, because it deals with all the elements that make us fear life. We need to look at life from a positive angle and never let anything get us down. If we face our fears head on, then we would succeed in life and that is more or less a motto which I have decided to embrace.

One of the key elements which have transpired upon the return of the Summer Hit Song Contest is the promotion of each artist and entry. How has f living re-defined the competition and what has been the general public reaction?

Having been an avid follower of the first four editions of the Summer Hit Song Contest, I have to point out the obvious in stating that this has been the most professional thus far. There is something about the exposure that each of the finalists has been given that adds weight to the competition itself. I am proud to have been selected as a finalist and am looking forward for the final night on the 23rd September at The Dome in the Seabank Hotel, Mellieħa.
