SHSC 2015: In-Depth Interview with Dorcas DebonoWritten by Clifford Jo Zahra
In recent years, the Malta Eurovision Song Contest has been the only local platform for songwriters and vocalists to produce original songs in English, but that has officially changed with the Summer Hit Song Contest which has returned to F Living for the second consecutive year. A total of 20 entries got through to the final stage of the competition with no less than 4 of them having already made it to the top of the music scene by virtue of reaching the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on at least one previous occasion.
We're going to chat to ALL the artists in contention so that you, our readers will have the opportunity to get to know them better. The first artist in our series of interviews is Dorcas Debono, and the song which she is presenting bears the name "Our Last Goodbye" composed by Dominic Cini to the lyrics of Rita Pace.
Dorcas, you are one of the youngest finalists in this year’s edition of the Summer Hit Song Contest, yet music enthusiasts have already heard your talent courtesy of the International Festival of Maltese Song 2013, and also the Talent Ġdid category of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2008. Is it daunting to experience a new music competition, and would you recommend participation to other newcomers?
It's always a new and different experience when you participate in a competition festival, obviously the higher the level of the festival is the higher the experience will be. I recommend the newcomers to try to be in these local competitions because they give you the chance to establish yourself on stage and in singing and the chance to be known with people as well.
“Din Jien”, composed by Dominic Cini to the lyrics of Rita Pace, was definitely your main highlight thus far, noting a 4th place result, ahead of some of Malta’s heavyweight artists including; Miriam Christine, Fiona Cauchi, Roger Tirazona and Janvil to name a few. How do you look back at the experience, and were you surprised at the final result?
The festival of the International Festival of Maltese Song I can say it was a huge highlight for me. It was my very first big festival for me and it was a great experience and it helped me mature more in music. I got the chance to perform at MCC which was amazing and performing with live band was nothing less. I was competing alongside establish singers which have a huge experience in their singing career.
The song "Din Jien" I believed in it from the first day i received it and i knew it was a very good song and I'm so satisfied with the performance i gave on the night. I wasn't surprised at all with the result because I believed that my song will be with top 5 in the final but due i was competing with other good singers i never knew what could happen but overall I'm so happy with the result and with the experience.
Would you kindly introduce your #summerhit2015 entry to our readers and also identify the meaning behind the lyrics?
