In recent years, the Malta Eurovision Song Contest has been the only local platform for songwriters and vocalists to produce original songs in English, but that has officially changed with the Summer Hit Song Contest which has returned to F Living for the second consecutive year. A total of 20 entries got through to the final stage of the competition with no less than 4 of them having already made it to the top of the music scene by virtue of reaching the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on at least one previous occasion.

We're going to chat to ALL the artists in contention so that you, our readers will have the opportunity to get to know them better. The second artist in our series of interviews is Rita Pace, and the song which she is presenting bears the name "Do It Better", to which she penned the lyrics and also composed the music.

Without a doubt, you are the most experienced participant in the Summer Hit Song Contest 2015, having successfully made the finals of every competition organised in the local music scene; Malta Eurovision Song Contest, International Festival of Maltese Song, the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, and most recently L-Għanja tal-Poplu. Could you kindly let us know how you prepare for each competition, and maybe even cite your most favourite song as performed throughout the years?

I just practice the song. I like to concentrate on the performance itself and communicate with the audience. I have no favourite song because I focus on what I am doing at the moment and always want to do better.

Apart from being a versatile vocalist with heaps of experience, you are also an extremely respected songwriter, yet the mind boggles whether you find it difficult to pen high quality songs for other performers, knowing that you can do them justice yourself. Care to comment?

I actually find it much easier to write for other vocalists than for myself because it is more exciting for me producing a song as part of a team. I am extremely happy with the way the songs are interpreted because there are many fantastic singers.

Would you kindly introduce your #summerhit2015 entry to our readers and also identify the meaning behind the lyrics?

My entry is about a woman who tries to put an end to an abusive relationship by standing up for herself but is vilified by her partner for doing so. Unfortunately, we have a lot of stereotypes regarding gender. Women who are independent and don’t take any nonsense from anyone are labelled as aggressive rather than the people who force them to behave that way.

It is a song that explores the subject of chauvinism and victimization, but this topic can also be extrapolated to abuse in many situations including child abuse and exploitation. The point is that there is no section in society which is good or bad, but there are good and bad qualities in everyone.

Would you like to say anything to our readers at escflashmalta.com?

I would like to thank them for supporting Maltese music and I urge them to continue doing so.

On Sunday 14th June, it was revealed by the producers of the Summer Hit Song Contest (#summerhit2015) that four entries had to be withdrawn from the competition due to other commitments during the recording dates. Lynn Chircop, a successful female vocalist and musician, who had the immense opportunity to represent Malta at the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest with “To Dream Again”, was recently one of the special guests on “The Celebrity Night”, a Saturday night chat show hosted by Deo Grech on F Living.

In a short interview, she revealed that she had thought twice about going to the international music competition, due to many reasons I had wished I could postpone my opportunity to represent Malta after winning but considering the odds the experience turned out to be fruitful for my career and a person with other dreams to follow.

Asked by Deo Grech about the possibility of a return to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, Lynn stated that she has written a song for every edition of the event since then, meaning that she has written no less than 12 possible entries, but never submit any of them. As many beforehand have stated, ‘never say never’.

In a second question, asked by lyricist Emil Calleja Bayliss, about whether she has ever thought of partaking in a competition with an original entry in Maltese, Lynn was even more positive noting that it is something she would like to do in the future, if time permits. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, Austria.
