"I am not making any plans ... definitely not in 2016" are the words echoed by Gianluca Bezzina, in an exclusive statement to escflashmalta.com, the singing doctor whose meteoric rise to fame in the local music industry was a direct result of his participation in the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest with 'Tomorrow', an original song co-written by Boris Cezek and Dean Muscat.
Gianluca Bezzina, also the lead vocalist of Funk Initiative, whose debut album 'The Cartogrophers' landed in 2015 tried his luck at representing Malta for a second consecutive time earlier this year, when he joined his siblings in a super-group under the name, L-Aħwa. Their entry, 'Beautiful to Me', written by Erik Anjou did not set the scoreboard on fire, mustering up 10 points, to finish in 12th place. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about Malta's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016.
In February, female singer/songwriter Ira Losco had the opportunity to co-host the national final for the Eurovision Song Contest alongside Gianluca Bezzina. This was the role of a lifetime, and one which they were asked to reprise for the 2014 Junior Eurovision Song Contest, an opportunity which they jointly declined due to other plans, including Gianluca's participation with L-Aħwa and the possibility of Ira Losco's return to the competition.
In a recent interview with Wiwibloggs, Ira Losco went on record stating that the timing of a possible participation in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest was inadequate with two singles yet to be released off her latest studio album "The Fire", before work on new material officially commences. Seen as a massive means of exposure to the international music market, the singer/songwriter does not rule out a possible return in 2016, but only with the right song.
Following Amber's victory at the 2015 Malta Eurovision Song Contest, Ira Losco sent out a message of congratulations to the whole team of "Warrior", including Elton Zarb and Matthew Mercieca, stating that it was a deserved victory, and she will be backing the whole entourage. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the 2015 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest which is taking place in Vienna, Austria.

It’s hard to believe that the Public Broadcasting Services already has a line-up for the next edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with twenty entries set to compete for the ticket to represent Malta in Vienna, Austria. Ira Losco, Malta’s top female singer/songwriter has been somewhat distant of mentioning a possible return to the Eurovision Song Contest throughout her successful music career, opting for a different genre, one which is more mature, and defines her growth as an artist. It is worth noting that in 2014, Ira somewhat re-ignited that flame to compete, following her role as co-host of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, alongside Gianluca Bezzina and Moira Delia.
Following a promotional campaign led by both local and international websites trying to convince Ira Losco to return to the prestigious music event, the singer/songwriter has opted to consider the possibility for 2016, according to a post on her Official Facebook Page. She is currently gearing up for the release of her final 2 singles from her latest album “The Fire” and is working on her next studio album, which will most likely be released in the next 2 years.
Hence, all the rumours which were spreading like wildfire could officially die-down because Ira Losco is not going to be a part of the 2015 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, which nevertheless features no less than 5 former representatives; Miriam Christine (1996), Olivia Lewis (2007), Ludwig Galea (2004), Glen Vella (2009) and Gianluca Bezzina (2013). Apart from the established names, it seems that the line-ups of established groups such as Trilogy and Monroe have both been altered for the upcoming edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with Ludwig Galea replacing Daniel Debono in the former, and Nadia Vella becoming a new member of the latter, joining former Malta Eurovision Song Contest finalist; Kelly Schembri.
Other names which have caught our eye in the list are surely those of; Karen DeBattista, winner of this year’s edition of L-Għanja tal-Poplu; Kurt Cassar, winner of the Best New Talent at this year’s edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza; Annabelle Vella, backing vocalist to Malta’s entry at the Eurovision Song Contest back in 2008 and a group of nuns, who have most likely been inspired by the recent phenomenon on The Voice of Italy.
Everyone is somewhat gasping about the non-inclusion of Ira Losco in the first shortlist with the general feeling around the industry being that the Public Broadcasting Services may go ahead and offer a wildcard as is stated in the rules and regulations. This will be made public in a week’s time as Peppi Azzopardi and his dedicated team at WE Media reveal the chosen acts. The Isle of MTV, an event which has been organised in Malta for the past couple of years will be returning on the 25th June with an incredible line-up that includes; Nicole Scherzinger, DJ Hardwell, Kiesza, Enrique Iglesias and Dizzee Rascal will also include a local performer in the form of the alternative/funk indie rock band; Funk Initiative who were competing in #TheBattleofTheBands alongside credible acts; Rikki Lee and Joe Roscoe, who in turn are currently number #1 and #8 on Malta's Top Ten with Nathan D on 89.7 Bay.
Funk Initiative is composed of; Gianluca Bezzina (vocals), Paul Torpiano (keyboards / backing vocals), Luke Grech (guitar), Fabian Bonello (saxophone / tambourine), Daniel Buttigieg (drums / percussion) and Shaun Abdilla (bass guitar). Their debut single "Paris" was a major hit in Malta, peaking at number #1 on Malta's Top Ten with Nathan D on 89.7 Bay and played throughout a good chunk of the year on all major radio stations. They have recently been working on new tracks in the studio and aim to release "House of Cards", their latest single this coming Sunday. If Malta does truly want to succeed at the Eurovision Song Contest, I am going to make a suggestion, one which people seem to agree on. A duet featuring both Gianluca and Ira Losco. In reality, both are former representatives, both are talented and have versatility beyond compare. Whether performing on a national scale or during an intimate concert, the male and female combination have always drawn the crowds, getting applause beyond compare and even standing ovations.
The rumour around the music scene seems to be that the Public Broadcasting Services is re-thinking their strategy in support of the Eurovision Song Contest, and possibly opting for an internal choice of artists for 2015. I could imagine the duet between Gianluca and Ira having the same feel that the Dutch brought to the stage during their entry in 2014 'Calm After the Storm' which finished as the first runner-up, the first top three result for The Netherlands since their victory in 1975. Performing 'Let Her Go' by Passenger, 'Say Something' by A Great Big World featuring Christina Aguilera and 'Xemx' by The Tramps, they oozed charm, confidence and talent.
I say to the Public Broadcasting Services, if you are choosing the artists internally, this is the most likely combination that both the people and the rest of the industry would agree on. Fair reminder that Ira honoured Malta back in 2002 with the track '7th Wonder' finishing in second place whilst Gianluca represented Malta in 2013 with the infectious 'Tomorrow' managing eighth place. Whilst a victory would not be assured, the fact that Ira would be forming a duet, would ease expectations ever so slightly. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even on Facebook & Twitter for more of such editorials.
In the past couple of months, Ira Losco has been nothing short of unstoppable, having released a brand new studio album entitled 'The Fire' which peaked at number #1 for several weeks on iTunes as well as co-hosting the Malta Eurovision Song Contest alongside Gianluca Bezzina. Well, the tone has been set for her first concert of the year, that being on the 30th May. Ira Losco will be joined by a ten-piece band and several guests, performing some of her greatest hits under the name 'An Evening with Ira Losco and Friends'.
"I am excited about this concert, the best part about writing an album, is what follows...performing it. The beauty of being able to creatively direct my concert is that I see my body of work in a completely different light." said an enthusiastic Ira Losco. Many will remember Ira Losco's sold out "Unplugged Concert” at the Hilton which was also captured in her DVD release. Numerous concerts, including those outside our shores, have confirmed Ira Losco’s strength within the realm of her Live performances and this event will promise nothing short of that.
Ira will not only be performing songs from 'The Fire' though with such an extensive repertoire at her disposal. In the meantime; Gianluca Bezzina, Ivan Grech of Winter Moods, Alex Alden, Dana McKeon and the internationally acclaimed Irene Fargo are amongst the guests confirmed for the show. The female singer/songwriter is ready to perform to the masses who will be present at this concert, aiming to promote upcoming local talent, succeeding abroad with the likes of Alex and Dana flying in specifically for this show from The Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
“I wanted to have a mix of different guests where I can stretch my boundaries. Both Alex and Dana for example are 2 female artists whom I consider as hard working artists. I’m also a fan of their work and I genuinely want to support what they do. Every performance with my guests is going to be special and a one-off experience.’ She added. We hope that you purchased tickets to this event considering that Jagged House revealed that the show is sold out. In the meantime, we urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even on Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news.

On the 7th and 8th February 2014, the Public Broadcasting Services will be hosting this years' edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre in Ta' Qali under the gaze of the local and foreign press, hence ready to put up a spectacular show as has been the case in recent years. In the week leading up to the competition, the competing acts along with the guest performers on both Friday and Saturday will take to the stage for a series of rehearsals.
escflashmalta.com plans to assess the outcome of the show by being present in the venue throughout various key points of the week, especially the run-throughs and dress rehearsals, respectively. This year, the Malta Eurovision Song Contest will be hosted by Moira Delia, Gianluca Bezzina and Ira Losco and foreign guests are set to include none other than Emmelie de Forest; winner of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, Maria Yaremchuk and Sebalter; representatives of Ukraine and Switzerland at this years’ international showcase.
At this point in time, we would like to wish all the very best of luck to all of the twenty (20) acts who are putting their first foot forward in the hope of representing Malta, and achieving another prestigious result, following up on the success of Tomorrow, co-written by Boris Cezek and Dean Muscat, with vocals provided by Gianluca. Another round of applause goes to Gordon Bonello, Rodney Gauci, Daniel D’Anastasi and Anton Attard for their hard work on this years’ competition. Stay tuned for all the latest news as soon as it becomes available.
