In less than 4 weeks, on the 18th February, Malta shall be choosing the next representative, and entry to represent Malta in the upcoming edition of the Eurovision Song Contest which is taking place in Kiev, Ukraine.
Details about the most anticipated music event of the year have been emerging in recent weeks, with the final 16 artists drawn into a running order, the hosts made public, and tickets becoming available.
The line-up for this year’s edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest consists of a group of artists who have grown up in the public eye, some of which are making their debut in the competition, and others who can be termed as veterans. Two of those so-called veterans will be opening and closing in the running order, which can be viewed in full below;
The Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2017 is taking place at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre (MFCC) for the very first time since 2013 when Gianluca Bezzina, a newcomer at the time had stormed to victory with his happy-go-lucky entry, “Tomorrow”, co-written by Boris Cezek and Dean Muscat.
The event shall be hosted by Daniel Azzopardi and Charlene Mercieca, neither a television host but both well-known with the public, with the latter having recently been in the public eye following a battle with cancer, and the latter being a leading male actor in the series ‘Strada Stretta’.
On behalf of the editorial team at escflashmalta.com, we would like to wish everyone all the very best of luck in this year’s edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest. Should you wish to support the contestants, purchase your tickets. Stay tuned to this portal as well as Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news.

Through their online news portal MaltaRightNow, Media.Link Communications issued the names of the finalist entries, and their respective performers for the 2015 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. Following an unspecified number of submissions, as received on the 17th July 2015, a professional panel of judges whittled down the entries, choosing those which reflected the saying 'music to their ears' before coming up with 40 songs, all of which were re-interpreted with LIVE vocals by their respective artists. At the end of this process, the 20 finalists were selected.
In the lists below, there are two (3) singers with more than one (1) entry, and the song which has an asterisk (*) next to their name will either have to be given to another performer, or else be withdrawn from the competition, and thus replaced by the 21st entry in the original list of results. At this stage of the competition, we urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com in order to find out what will happen with the final list of participants for the 2015 Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

Following the success of newcomer Michela Galea, whose entry "Mixja Li Bdiet" composed by Renato Briffa to the lyrics of Alfred E Baldacchino was a worthy winner, it seems that interest is well and truly alive, noting the belief that the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza may once more make a name for itself as a scouting competition, with previous winners including; Amber (ESC 2015), Ira Losco (ESC 2002), Miriam Christine (ESC 1996), Mike Spiteri (ESC 1995) and Fabrizio Faniello (ESC 2001, 2006).

In the words of Richard Stilgoe, it seems that there's a light at the end of the tunnel wherever the 2014 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is concerned with the organising committee chaired by Claudette Buttigieg publishing an updated list of semi-finalists. This comes into effect for the simple reason that each vocalist is only permitted to perform just ONE song from the television phase onwards.
At a glance, it seems that out of the SEVEN songs that Domenique had initially qualified with to the second phase, there will still be THREE in the competition with "Mara" composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Paul Ellul being the one she will be performing herself, "Ħamsin Sena Nazzjon" composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas to the lyrics of Paul Ellul being performed in a duet featuring Kaya and Nicole Brincat and "Passaġġ" written by Clinton Paul with a yet to be announced performer.
In the meantime, Josef Tabone has decided to withdraw his second song "Orrizonti" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino as initially reported on escflashmalta.com earlier this morning, meaning that another five entries have been brought into the list, according to the number of points received during the second phase of the competition where the judges were; Olivia Lewis, Andrew Attard, Mro Maurizio Schembri, Sharon Deguara Cipriott and Noel D’Anastas.
Aħjar - Simone Gauci (Mark Spiteri Lucas / Rita Pace)

Ġrajjiet - Michela Dalli (Minik / Stephen Baldacchino)

Tfajla - Donna (Ray Agius / Paul Ellul)
Tħobbni Kif Jien - Phylisienne Brincat (Philip Vella / Christopher Azzopardi)
Vagabond - Josef Tabone (Clinton Paul)
The FIVE entries that have now managed to sneak into the Top 30 are none other than; "Ensemble" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino with vocals provided by Johanna Galea, "Ġrajjiet" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino with vocals provided by Michela Dallia, "Ħolma ta' Nazzjon" composed by Mark Debono to the lyrics of Rita Pace with vocals provided by Cherylis Camilleri, "Miraklu" composed by Gillian Attard to the lyrics of Rita Pace with vocals provided by Ashlee Amber and "Ngħidulek Grazzi" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino.
The final change that we could denote in the list below is that Geordie DeBono has opted to keep "Tħobbni Kif Jien" composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Christopher Azzopardi, in the competition with veteran performer; Phyllisienne Brincat. Only two songs remain without a performer at the moment, those being the aforementioned "Passaġġ" and "Mixja li Bdiet" composed by Renato Briffa to the lyrics of Alfred E Baldacchino. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the 2014 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

In recent years, the Public Broadcasting Services has been known to adapt the pre-selection process for the Eurovision Song Contest in a manner to include upcoming talent. Avid fans of the event surely remember the Opportunity 2 Challenge which was aired through Showtime on Television Malta around five to six years ago. As a matter of fact, one of the entrants that got his first big break was none other than Josef Tabone who got through the process to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in 2006 in a duet with Amanda entitled It Just Comes Natural written by Clinton Paul.
From then onwards, Josef has been going from strength to strength, making it through to the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza on multiple occasions, the most recent being earlier this year in another duet, this time with Johanna, where they also managed a top ten placing. In 2010, he also made it through to the first qualification phase with the song Who Cares composed by Elton Zarb to the lyrics of Rita Pace. escflashmalta.com is pleased to exclusively reveal that Josef will be sending in his submissions next week, with the hope of getting through to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest for the second time in his career. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for the revelation of more names in the coming days.
Josef and Johanna, a duet which features a male and female counterparts with surprisingly different backgrounds yet brought together for the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza where they will be performing the track Inwegħdek composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino. Just below, five questions have been asked by the editorial board of escflashmalta.com in order for you to get to know Josef and Johanna a little bit better. Nevertheless, this is an interview and review with former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Chris and Moira listening to all of the songs and passing their judgement. With regards to the duet, they were somewhat short in their analysis stating that the whole set-up 'needs a bit of spark' ultimately awarding them with five (5) points, and categorising them as average.
Inwegħdek composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino is the third competing duet in this years’ edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza following Li Jien Illum performed by Simarija & Mikhail and Gloria sung by Mauro & Kim. It is quite intriguing to denote that the showcase has not presented as much collaborations in recent years and now you are in direct competition with another two songs. What makes your entry different from the other ones when deciding who to vote for?
First of all, the three duets have different styles and we’re sure that each duo will do their very best on the final night. Our song Inwedghek has very powerful and strong vocals, the melodies, harmonies and voice techniques used make the song a number to look forward to on the final night. Furthermore, our song can be interpreted in various ways: first, as a couple, promising each other of always being there in times of trouble; secondly, people who promise others to give a helping hand in times of need. We believe that the elements of our song will thus transfer a positive feeling to our listeners.
Josef, an individual who doesn’t need too much of an introduction when it comes to the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza with 2013 marking a fifth participation. Your last entry back in the 2010 edition of the showcase was also a duet with Francesca, entitled Deċiżjoni Tal-Qalb, which you co-wrote together and ultimately saw to it finishing in fifth place at the end of the evening. It was your best showing within a local competition and therefore, you are hoping to build on that success in the next couple of weeks. Each experience recalls a different story but how will they aid you as you take to the stage this time round?
One learns from each experience to always improve in order to achieve better results in the future. I believe that listening to different music styles and singing with different people who have different musical backgrounds, helps one professional singing career. Being part of one of Malta’s top Gospel Choirs, Animae, has also made me a better singer due to the fact that each choir member is different in their vocal ability and so it made me realise that working with different individuals will improve one’s vocal ability and also increase one’s appreciation towards different music styles and voice techniques. As regards to Festival Indipendenza, I must say that since participating in 2007 with the song Tarantella, which placed 4th (jury results) and 2nd (televoting), I was met with many opportunities where I was able to improve and succeed in my singing career.
Johanna, a relative newcomer to the local music scene and competing as a leading vocalist for the very first time but nevertheless has somewhat been in the background for quite a couple of years. Earlier this year, you had the opportunity to join Deborah C as a backing vocalist during her performance of the track Love-O-Holic composed by Johan Bejerholm to the lyrics of Gerard James Borg. The Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre is an astonishing venue and the crowd for the Malta Eurovision Song Contest is quite warm in comparison to other events. What could you recall of that experience and how are you aiming to come out of the shadow of being a back-up singer?
I have been singing for quite some time now and although I’m not a very familiar face as a lead singer I must say that I had my share of experience. Singing as a backing vocalist with various Maltese artists, I was able to meet different people such as: Zucchero, U2 UK (tribute to the band U2), and quite recently, Johnny Logan. Being a backing vocalist is always a different experience, and I thank Deborah C for taking me on the Malta Eurovision Song Contest stage with her both this year and last year. Unfortunately though, being a backing vocalist in Malta does not get you anywhere because in order to practise your passion, many-a-times, you have to be famous on this small island. Now that I am finally about to show my talent as a lead singer (along with Josef who is amazing); I hope to be able to work with some of Malta’s established composers, authors and singers....and maybe one day with foreign ones as well.
It has been already noted that this will be the third duet of the evening and as a matter of fact, Inwegħdek will perform in slot number ten that means that it will be half way through the competition. Unfortunately, all of the duets will be performed within the first half of the showcase and therefore, this could prove difficult for the judges to make a respective decision. What are your thoughts about performing within this slot and how are you planning to present your entry on stage?
We think that we have a good slot. The song has a mellow feeling and the lyrics have a strong meaning. We believe that our song has an important element of friendship which I’m sure the judges and the audience will enjoy. We have also decided to keep our stage performance simple in order to let the judges and the audience focus on the true meaning of the song, which will be delivered to them through both our melodical voices and unique friendship. As for a surprise on stage, well, there might be something, but yet again it will be simple and eye catching. The most important thing we are planning for is for us to give the best performance on the night and last but not least to enjoy our experience together and make it a memorable one.
Would you like to say anything to our readers at escflashmalta.com?
We would like to take the opportunity to thank all those supporting us in this festival and also in our singing career. We feel really honoured to have enormous support. We would also like to take the opportunity to thanks Stephen and Minik for believing in us but most importantly we would like to thank our parents, families and friends who keep on supporting us till the very end. Thanks and God Bless You All xxx
It has been a great start to what looks like an amazing week full of live music – the Beland Music Festival kicked off in spectacular fashion last night with the participation of local heartthrob Kevin Borg who serenaded the crowd with his magical voice and charisma. The Beland Music Festival this year moved from the Market Square to Bulebel and one can say that the move was a success, the festival got bigger and if today’s concert was anything to go by one can easily say it got even better.
Barber’s Cut, a new upcoming band led by Kelly Busuttil opened proceedings and got the crowd going; showing that they indeed have potential. The audience seemed to have enjoyed the relatively unknown band, who mixed it up playing some of the most popular hits. They were followed by the talented Glen Vella and Pamela, who entertained the crowd with a number of popular cover versions. As the time went on, the crowd got bigger and bigger, everyone awaiting the arrival of Kevin Borg and when he finally took the stage Kevin received a hero’s welcome in Bulebel.
He kicked off proceedings with his Swedish Idol Winner’s single With Every Bit of Me and continued with a mix of cover versions and songs from his own repertoire. He closed the first part of the concert with his Malta Eurovisision entry, Needing You, where he was accompanied by former Eurovision representative Glen Vella, Pamela, Josef Tabone and Janice Mangion. The second part of the show was as strong and the crowd cherished every moment with cheering, waving and singing at the top of their lungs to Kevin’s hits. Kevin was clearly moved and described the event as being even better than his Swedish Idol final as he had never expected so many people to attend the event in aid of Puttinu Cares.
Kevin encouraged the people to attend and donate to this genuine cause. Tonight’s music festival will feature Malta’s top female artist – Ira Losco is set to take the stage for her first Summer gig and her first gig after the launch of her album The Fire which proved to be a major success. She is expected to sing some of her latest songs along with a few numbers from her previous records, she will be supported by The New Victorians an up and coming band and also Planet Seed fronted by Klinsmann. For more details on what to expect during the Beland Music Festival you can visit the programme here or their official Facebook Page.
It is important to note that on Thursday, the organizers behind the Beland Music Festival saw it fit to organize a big screen in order to support Malta’s bid in the Eurovision Song Contest – so we encourage you to join with your family and friends, grab your Maltese flags and on Thursday go and watch the Second Semi-Final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Bulebel as part of the Beland Music Festival. The atmosphere is expected to be electrifying as there is nothing more special than cheering for the Maltese representative together and creating a mini Eurovision atmosphere here in Malta.
Apart from enjoying the live music for a great cause, at the Beland Music Festival you can chill and relax, there’s a children’s area and a number of stalls where people can just sit there as the concert is ongoing. There is something for all the family and for all the music lovers it is something you surely can’t miss as apart from donating towards Puttinu Cares you would be also supporting the local talent who invest so much time and effort to deliver a great product. So make sure to visit the Beland Music Festival and donate something for a great cause. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news.
The Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre will once more be playing host to this years’ edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest and with the event taking place in less than a week, preparations within the venue have well been underway for the past couple of days. The competing artists will start their initial rehearsals on Tuesday and will continue perfecting their act until Friday morning when a full run through takes place prior to the evening show. The editorial board of escflashmalta.com will keep you posted with all of the latest details from the event as it has been doing for the past couple of weeks. As a matter of fact, the teams of the respective entries are being revealed simultaneously and some names have clearly gained our attention especially due to their vast experience in the industry.
As expected, Kevin Borg who will be presenting the track Needing You has went for a number of renowned performers including the likes of Josef Tabone, Dominic Cini, Janice Mangion and Nadine Axisa. The latter is certainly the most intriguing having joined Thea Garrett at the Eurovision Song Contest back in 2010 whilst also being a veteran in the local competition, with many past participations. Both Janice and Josef on the other hand managed to make it through to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on one occasion each in 2006 and 2012 respectively. Another individual who has been rather well noted is Dario Bezzina who will be the backing vocal for Let Your Heart Talk performed by Franklin. The track features predominant male vocals and it is expected that more soloists will be on this respective team.
Klinsmann is the third individual to have had his on stage team revealed noting that he will be joined by two female vocalists in the form of Bay Awards Nominee; Lyndsay as well as Kylie Coleiro, who was a finalist in the 2009 edition of the Malta Eurosong competition. Nevertheless, as has been the case in recent years, Klinsmann will also have a guitarist for his rendition of The Remedy and joining him will be Ben who will also provide male backing vocals. That leaves the last two females to make revelations; the first being, Domenique and her entry Too Little Too Late requiring that extra additional aid to make it sound more atmospheric. The team will comprise of the aforementioned, Kylie Coleiro as well as Sarah Crystal and Christine Haber, who is the daughter of former commentator Eileen Montesin.
The second artist to reveal the team that will be joining her on stage is none other than Dorothy Bezzina who will be singing Starting from the End in the semi-final. She will be joined by a team of upcoming artists such as Martina Farrugia, and Nathalie Pace who performed with her during Voices as well as former Sfida contestants; Talitha Dimech, Samaria Bezzina and Tezara Camilleri. Honestly speaking, the amount of remarkable vocals backing the artists is just sublime. Rumour has it that Pamela will also make a welcome return with Amber and her entry In Control but this has not been confirmed. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news from the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2013.
