In the aftermath of “L-Għanja tal-Poplu – Festival tal-Kanzunetta Maltija”, the attention of the local music scene quickly turns to the “Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza”, another music competition which features original songs in Maltese, capping a successful series of months for our national language.
This year’s edition of the “Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza” will be returning back to it’s home-base on The Granaries in Floriana, noting that 12 months ago, the festival was staged at Pjazza Teatru Rjal in Valletta, something of a rare occasion.
23 entries will be sung on stage, but prior to that, there are still some eliminatory phases which need to be held, first starting off with the “Talent Żgħażugħ” category from which 3 songs will be chosen through a mixture of tele-voting (40%) and expert jury voting (60%). Those competing are as follows:
3 songs have also been shortlisted with the “Talent Stabbilit” category yet will be requiring the full support of the public at home, noting that during the second phase of the competition these songs originally ranked between 21st and 23rd. Those competing are as follows:
The rest of the field, therefore 20 in total features acts who have taken part in other national competitions such as the “Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza”, “L-Għanja tal-Poplu – Festival tal-Kanzunetta Maltija”, “Malta Eurovision Song Contest”, “Junior Eurovision Song Contest” and also “Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza Jr”. Those competing are as follows:
On the right hand side to each competing entry, there is a number which duly corresponds to the televoting portion of the competition. In the “Talent Stabbilit”, the televoting winner is handed out as a seperate award, but the other sections have different rules and regulations as stated above. This year’s “Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza” will be taking place on Monday 19th September, and is organised under the auspices of Media.Link Communications. Through their online news portal MaltaRightNow, Media.Link Communications issued the names of the finalist entries, and their respective performers for the 2015 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. Following an unspecified number of submissions, as received on the 17th July 2015, a professional panel of judges whittled down the entries, choosing those which reflected the saying 'music to their ears' before coming up with 40 songs, all of which were re-interpreted with LIVE vocals by their respective artists. At the end of this process, the 20 finalists were selected.
In the lists below, there are two (3) singers with more than one (1) entry, and the song which has an asterisk (*) next to their name will either have to be given to another performer, or else be withdrawn from the competition, and thus replaced by the 21st entry in the original list of results. At this stage of the competition, we urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com in order to find out what will happen with the final list of participants for the 2015 Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

Following the success of newcomer Michela Galea, whose entry "Mixja Li Bdiet" composed by Renato Briffa to the lyrics of Alfred E Baldacchino was a worthy winner, it seems that interest is well and truly alive, noting the belief that the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza may once more make a name for itself as a scouting competition, with previous winners including; Amber (ESC 2015), Ira Losco (ESC 2002), Miriam Christine (ESC 1996), Mike Spiteri (ESC 1995) and Fabrizio Faniello (ESC 2001, 2006).

escflashmalta.com has been granted permission to speak to the local artists competing within this years' edition of the International Festival of Maltese Song, fourteen in total. Apart from speaking to them about their careers thus far, it is pivotal to denote that we have focused on their participation within this competition in particular and their stance on Maltese being passed onto future generations through the medium of song. The order in which these interviews are being presented does not reflect the running order of the competition. Dario and Grecia Bezzina are the seventh artists and they will be performing the track Solitaire composed by Dario Bezzina to the lyrics of Rita Pace.
Throughout the years, this sibling duo has somewhat been present within a series of festivals, amongst them the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza in which you last took part in 2012 with the song Se Nibda Jien which was also penned by Rita Pace. Each experience is different but nevertheless, would you rather perform together or as solosists?
As you rightly pointed out, each experience is unique in itself. We believe that our voices blend well together and there is obviously chemistry between us. When we perform together there is more responsibility towards each other but on the other hand we think that the level of ‘stress’ is shared equally between us. In our opinion it depends mainly on the song - when a composition is written for two voices, we find no objection in performing together.
Grecia, back in 2011, you finished as the first runner-up within L-Għanja tal-Poplu with the song Tal-Komma Twila composed by Dario Bezzina to the lyrics of Emil Calleja Bayliss. It was your first major success within the local music scene and it was also your debut entry within that respective competition. Looking back at the performance, two years on, would you have changed anything to possibly solidify your position or maybe even better it and how did the experience help you become the artist you have become today?
I am very satisfied with my performance and genuinely I won’t change anything. I think this experience was a major step in my music career. It provided me with various opportunities, both locally and abroad.
Dario, many will remember your second place finish at the 2004 edition of the Junior Eurosong with Eviva L-Mużika but then again, you have come a long way since then, even reaching the semi-final of the Malta Eurosong. Nevertheless, it is worth pointing out that you are managing to earn the respect of the industry by virtue of your compositions, having managed to get through to the finals of several competitions in recent years. How does being a songwriter differ from being a vocalist and which do you prefer?
In my opinion a song is a work of art - the songwriter plays the role of an artist whereas the vocalist represents the colour on canvas. Although both roles encompass different characteristics, they are both vital for a composition to be complete. I believe that when a singer performs a self-written composition it provides an added advantage in the sense that, the singer/songwriter would find it easier to pass on the message of the song to the audience.
The International Festival of Maltese Song, returning following an eleven year absence will be seeing you join forces once more in a duet entitled Solitaire which is composed by Dario Bezzina to the lyrics of Rita Pace. Would you care to explain to our readers the meaning behind the lyrics and what genre the song encompasses?
Our song is a traditional ethnic ballad. The game solitaire is a metaphor which describes how our traditions are in absolute solitude. We believe that our traditional belongings are not being given the importance they deserve. We must be proud of our history, our own language and cultural environment as they are the main authentic features which make us Maltese.
As a music competition, the International Festival of Maltese Song will be following in the footsteps of L-Għanja tal-Poplu and Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza in promoting the national language through the medium of music. With the Public Broadcasting Services supporting the event, it makes it only second to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest. Do you believe that there’s a place for this competition within the local music industry and do you support it’s continuation in the years to come?
There was an absolute need for this comeback! For many years, the International Festival of Maltese Song served as a platform for various songs in Maltese which are still very popular nowadays. Thanks to the Committee of the Festival, our songs are being promoted in the best way possible. For this reason, we will surely support its continuation in the years to come!
Would you like to say anything to our readers at escflashmalta.com?
We would like to thank you all for your support – the support you give us is beyond rewarding. Thank you for the constructive criticism we continuously receive as it is one of the key elements which keeps us on our toes ;) Love you all ;) xxx
escflashmalta.com is proud to announce that the organisers behind the International Festival of Maltese Song have devised a running order which accentuates the features of each entry. This competition is returning to the local music scene following an absence of eleven years and in theory and fact becomes the third song competition to promote Maltese as a national language through the medium of song. A total of fourteen (14) entries made it through the initial judging phases including artists who have been a part of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on a couple of occasions, apart from even being at the Eurovision Song Contest. There will be a series of awards given on the night of the competition and therefore, all will be hoping to give their all.
The International Festival of Maltese Song is taking place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre on Saturday, 9th November 2013. Tickets for the event can be obtained from the venue booking office as from today, and have been reasonably priced in order to accomodate to everyone's needs. The competition is set to kick off at 19:30 CET with fourteen (14) local artists and fourteen (14) foreign artists taking to the main stage. The editorial board of escflashmalta.com would like to encourage everyone who has music close to their heart to attend the International Festival of Maltese Song and support this venture as it was supported when it was the jewel of the music industry.

escflashmalta.com was the first media outlet to promote the exhibition of Dario Bezzina and Kayley Cuschieri in Istanbul, Turkey as they were set to represent Malta in the Shining Star Festival taking place between the 5th and the 11th June. They have just returned from the competition achieving extremely positive results. It is worth noting first and foremost that both participated in different categories which pertained to age groups. The participation of both artists could have not been possible without the support of the World Association of Festival and Artists whose Chairman is none other than former Malta Eurovision Song Contest Chairman, Norman Hamilton.
During the competition in Istanbul, Turkey though the association was represented by secretary Robert Cefai who was also the Head of Delegation for Malta as well as Vice-President of the Jury. Kayley Cuschieri finished in the first runner-up position in her category which included artists between ten (10) and fourteen (14) years whilst Dario Bezzina finished in first place within his category which included artists between nineteen (19) and twenty-five (25). Whilst Dario performed Valentine Lost and Era Stupendo from the Eurovision Song Contest, Hayley chose classics in the form of Proud Mary and Think of Me. escflashmalta.com would like to congratulate both the artists for their successful participation and also encourage our readers to stay tuned for all of the latest news.

Istanbul, Turkey will be hosting the Shining Star Festival starting as from next week featuring artists from all over the continent including Malta. As a matter of fact, the World Association of Artists and Festivals selected a male and a female from a different demographic to represent the nation in two categories. The chosen ones were none other than Dario Bezzina and Kayley Cuschieri. Both have experience in competitions, whether local and foreign and with a number of accolades to their name it made the selection slightly easier.
In the space of a couple of years, Dario Bezzina has made leaps in his career, reaching the final of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza on numerous occasions both a soloist and in duet with his sister, Grecia whilst also making the finals of L-Għanja tal-Poplu both as a songwriter and lead performer. In recent years, he was approached to do backing vocals during the Malta Eurovision Song Contest for Amber and Franklin Calleja. Dario Bezzina will be performing two covers in Turkey, both tracks from the Eurovision Song Contest, those being Valentine Lost (Iceland 2007) and Era Stupendo (Switzerland 2008) whilst Kayley Cushcieri will be performing notable songs including Proud Mary and Think of Me. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news as soon as it becomes available.

The Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre will once more be playing host to this years’ edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest and with the event taking place in less than a week, preparations within the venue have well been underway for the past couple of days. The competing artists will start their initial rehearsals on Tuesday and will continue perfecting their act until Friday morning when a full run through takes place prior to the evening show. The editorial board of escflashmalta.com will keep you posted with all of the latest details from the event as it has been doing for the past couple of weeks. As a matter of fact, the teams of the respective entries are being revealed simultaneously and some names have clearly gained our attention especially due to their vast experience in the industry.
As expected, Kevin Borg who will be presenting the track Needing You has went for a number of renowned performers including the likes of Josef Tabone, Dominic Cini, Janice Mangion and Nadine Axisa. The latter is certainly the most intriguing having joined Thea Garrett at the Eurovision Song Contest back in 2010 whilst also being a veteran in the local competition, with many past participations. Both Janice and Josef on the other hand managed to make it through to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on one occasion each in 2006 and 2012 respectively. Another individual who has been rather well noted is Dario Bezzina who will be the backing vocal for Let Your Heart Talk performed by Franklin. The track features predominant male vocals and it is expected that more soloists will be on this respective team.
Klinsmann is the third individual to have had his on stage team revealed noting that he will be joined by two female vocalists in the form of Bay Awards Nominee; Lyndsay as well as Kylie Coleiro, who was a finalist in the 2009 edition of the Malta Eurosong competition. Nevertheless, as has been the case in recent years, Klinsmann will also have a guitarist for his rendition of The Remedy and joining him will be Ben who will also provide male backing vocals. That leaves the last two females to make revelations; the first being, Domenique and her entry Too Little Too Late requiring that extra additional aid to make it sound more atmospheric. The team will comprise of the aforementioned, Kylie Coleiro as well as Sarah Crystal and Christine Haber, who is the daughter of former commentator Eileen Montesin.
The second artist to reveal the team that will be joining her on stage is none other than Dorothy Bezzina who will be singing Starting from the End in the semi-final. She will be joined by a team of upcoming artists such as Martina Farrugia, and Nathalie Pace who performed with her during Voices as well as former Sfida contestants; Talitha Dimech, Samaria Bezzina and Tezara Camilleri. Honestly speaking, the amount of remarkable vocals backing the artists is just sublime. Rumour has it that Pamela will also make a welcome return with Amber and her entry In Control but this has not been confirmed. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news from the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2013.
