In the aftermath of “L-Għanja tal-Poplu – Festival tal-Kanzunetta Maltija”, the attention of the local music scene quickly turns to the “Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza”, another music competition which features original songs in Maltese, capping a successful series of months for our national language.
This year’s edition of the “Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza” will be returning back to it’s home-base on The Granaries in Floriana, noting that 12 months ago, the festival was staged at Pjazza Teatru Rjal in Valletta, something of a rare occasion.
23 entries will be sung on stage, but prior to that, there are still some eliminatory phases which need to be held, first starting off with the “Talent Żgħażugħ” category from which 3 songs will be chosen through a mixture of tele-voting (40%) and expert jury voting (60%). Those competing are as follows:
3 songs have also been shortlisted with the “Talent Stabbilit” category yet will be requiring the full support of the public at home, noting that during the second phase of the competition these songs originally ranked between 21st and 23rd. Those competing are as follows:
The rest of the field, therefore 20 in total features acts who have taken part in other national competitions such as the “Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza”, “L-Għanja tal-Poplu – Festival tal-Kanzunetta Maltija”, “Malta Eurovision Song Contest”, “Junior Eurovision Song Contest” and also “Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza Jr”. Those competing are as follows:
On the right hand side to each competing entry, there is a number which duly corresponds to the televoting portion of the competition. In the “Talent Stabbilit”, the televoting winner is handed out as a seperate award, but the other sections have different rules and regulations as stated above. This year’s “Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza” will be taking place on Monday 19th September, and is organised under the auspices of Media.Link Communications. Through their online news portal MaltaRightNow, Media.Link Communications issued the names of the finalist entries, and their respective performers for the 2015 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. Following an unspecified number of submissions, as received on the 17th July 2015, a professional panel of judges whittled down the entries, choosing those which reflected the saying 'music to their ears' before coming up with 40 songs, all of which were re-interpreted with LIVE vocals by their respective artists. At the end of this process, the 20 finalists were selected.
In the lists below, there are two (3) singers with more than one (1) entry, and the song which has an asterisk (*) next to their name will either have to be given to another performer, or else be withdrawn from the competition, and thus replaced by the 21st entry in the original list of results. At this stage of the competition, we urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com in order to find out what will happen with the final list of participants for the 2015 Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

Following the success of newcomer Michela Galea, whose entry "Mixja Li Bdiet" composed by Renato Briffa to the lyrics of Alfred E Baldacchino was a worthy winner, it seems that interest is well and truly alive, noting the belief that the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza may once more make a name for itself as a scouting competition, with previous winners including; Amber (ESC 2015), Ira Losco (ESC 2002), Miriam Christine (ESC 1996), Mike Spiteri (ESC 1995) and Fabrizio Faniello (ESC 2001, 2006).

In the words of Richard Stilgoe, it seems that there's a light at the end of the tunnel wherever the 2014 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is concerned with the organising committee chaired by Claudette Buttigieg publishing an updated list of semi-finalists. This comes into effect for the simple reason that each vocalist is only permitted to perform just ONE song from the television phase onwards.
At a glance, it seems that out of the SEVEN songs that Domenique had initially qualified with to the second phase, there will still be THREE in the competition with "Mara" composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Paul Ellul being the one she will be performing herself, "Ħamsin Sena Nazzjon" composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas to the lyrics of Paul Ellul being performed in a duet featuring Kaya and Nicole Brincat and "Passaġġ" written by Clinton Paul with a yet to be announced performer.
In the meantime, Josef Tabone has decided to withdraw his second song "Orrizonti" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino as initially reported on escflashmalta.com earlier this morning, meaning that another five entries have been brought into the list, according to the number of points received during the second phase of the competition where the judges were; Olivia Lewis, Andrew Attard, Mro Maurizio Schembri, Sharon Deguara Cipriott and Noel D’Anastas.

Tħobbni Kif Jien - Phylisienne Brincat (Philip Vella / Christopher Azzopardi)

The FIVE entries that have now managed to sneak into the Top 30 are none other than; "Ensemble" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino with vocals provided by Johanna Galea, "Ġrajjiet" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino with vocals provided by Michela Dallia, "Ħolma ta' Nazzjon" composed by Mark Debono to the lyrics of Rita Pace with vocals provided by Cherylis Camilleri, "Miraklu" composed by Gillian Attard to the lyrics of Rita Pace with vocals provided by Ashlee Amber and "Ngħidulek Grazzi" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino.
The final change that we could denote in the list below is that Geordie DeBono has opted to keep "Tħobbni Kif Jien" composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Christopher Azzopardi, in the competition with veteran performer; Phyllisienne Brincat. Only two songs remain without a performer at the moment, those being the aforementioned "Passaġġ" and "Mixja li Bdiet" composed by Renato Briffa to the lyrics of Alfred E Baldacchino. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the 2014 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

Laura, one of the female vocalists competing in this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza with the track Fraħt Għax Sibtek written by Frederick Camilleri, is becoming somewhat accustomed to participating within this local competition noting that this will be her third participation. Just below, five questions have been asked by the editorial board of escflashmalta.com in order for you to get to know Laura a little bit better. Nevertheless, this is an interview and review with former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Chris and Moira listening to all of the songs and passing their judgement. With regards to Laura, they stated that 'she has a good voice, but nevertheless needs to smile more whilst giving a performance', ultimately offering seven (7) points.
Laura, this is your third time in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, and you are definitely hoping that it will ultimately prove to be the big break prior to making it through to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest. It is no surprise that you have submitted entries with the hope of representing Malta at the Pan-European competition but have thus far not proven successful in making it through to the final stages. Will you be adopting a new approach for the coming years?
I like to sing and perform different styles of music so i look forward for any challenge and opportunity that may arise. I always believe in the songs I submit.
In this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, you are presenting the track Fraht Ghax Sibtek which has somewhat received mixed comments from the general public thus far. Frederick Camilleri, the veteran songwriter is responsible for the track, noting that he was also the individual behind last years' masterpiece which ranked within the top ten following the final vote of the professional jury. What is the exact meaning behind the song and what are you anticipating with regards to the live performance?
The song originally was a poem composed for a couple who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, but the lyrics also describe love which is never ending, which grew from the first moment. I feel this song is special as I am also living it in real life thanks to my husband Ramon. So it is completely dedicated to him!!
The songwriting duo made up of Philip Vella and Gerard James Borg are somewhat synonymous to the world of the Eurovision Song Contest with their entries having represented Malta on five occasions from the year 2000 onwards. In 2009, you had the opportunity to perform their entry Something About You during the Malta Eurosong semi-final. The track, predominantly pop infused with dance was relatively intriguing. How was it created and would you have made any alterations to the presentation if you had the chance?
Well after I perform and watch the performance I always criticise myself and see room for improvement. Obviously I was still younger at age and now I think differently in terms of performance.
In 2002, the Festival Internazzjonali tal-Kanzunetta Maltija was officially suspended in order to give way for the nations' participation in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest but both were eventually given up subsequently. It was recently announced by Robert Cefai that the competition will be officially returning this year and that preparations are set to begin immediately now that the green light has been granted. Do you have any interest in submitting for this competition and do you believe it is a positive step for the representation of Maltese through the medium of music?
I think this festival is a good stepping stone for singers who love Maltese language as I do. But unfortunately I do believe that in Malta you can do millions of festivals which will mean nothing compared to the Eurovision Song Contest as the majority of the Maltese public is only interested in it. This is the feedback I get. I am not known as other singers are in Malta and when I meet new people and come to know I am a singer too, they question me why I don't take part in the Malta Eurovision. This mentality has to stop!!!
Would you like to say anything to our readers at escflashmalta.com?
I thank them for all the support and that is what keeps me going!!
Indifest, hosted by Mark Azzopardi and Christine Haber on NET Television returns for a fifth consecutive episode this evening following the initial success of the past four weeks in which a total of twelve entries from this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza have been presented. Viewers have the opportunity to select their favourite tracks from both the Established and Teenage Category whilst watching the programme or during the rest of the day as clips could be seen either on television or online. Media.Link Communications and escflashmalta.com are working together in several areas in order to promote the competition in the best possible way noting that it remains as the leading showcase for the Maltese language through the medium of song. The programme starts at 20:30 CET.
In this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, the Established Category has been denoted to include within it a mixture of young and upcoming talent which is representative of the future local music scene. In this evenings' programme, first up is none other than Laura Bruno with the song Fraħt Għax Sibtek written by Frederick Camilleri. The female artist is participating in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza for the third time and is still hoping to make her Malta Eurovision Song Contest debut. On the other hand, joining her this evening from the same category is Domenique with the track B'Ħarsitna 'l Fuq composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas and lyrics by Paul Ellul. Domenique reached the final stages of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest earlier this year having also reached the semi-final back in 2011.
Michelle Portelli is one of the solo performers competing in the teenage talent portion of the competition and will therefore have to perform her entry Għix live for the very first time. The track composed by Minik to the lyrics of Rita Pace is written in an uptempo fashion. As has been the case in the first couple of episodes, there will be two special guests, both of which are vocalists; the first one being The Greenfields, a folkloristic group who represent the most positive elements of the music industry of the days gone by and the second one being Christabelle, three time winner of the Solo Artist accolade at the Bay Music Awards. Annalise Ellul who was a guest during the first programme will oversee her dancers as they occupy the role of resident guests. Remember Indifest returns to NET Television, this evening at 20:30 CET. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for the latest news.
The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza has been well adapted not only to promote the best in local talent but also the language with the competition remaining the only particular background for Maltese, one of the main items which many can identify to be heritage. The pace of the festival went smoothly except for a small minor glitch during one of the latter entries which prompted an immediate restart and ultimately a great response from the audience. The Established Category featured performances from twenty acts in total with a variety of genres well represented whilst the Teenage Category features a total of four entries this time round because of a tie in third place in the second phase of competition which was televised through the programme Indifest as hosted by Ronald Briffa and Christine Haber who were also the comperes for the evening. In the end, the winners of each respective category were agreed upon by the jury panel made up of Mike Spiteri, Ludwig Galea, Mandy Micallef Grimaud and Matthew Calleja.
It is important to point out that the introduction of the mychoice.pn award was a welcome addition with the online voting racking in multitude of votes from all over the country whilst the tele-voting has always kept things on edge. The top three results were resoundingly met with applause especially as Domenique with the track Tama u Kuraġġ composed by Philip Vella and penned by Cher Vella was the first announced in third place, followed by Marilena Gauci and her song Bl-Ikbar Serjetà composed by Philip Vella and penned by Joe Chircop and then finally a content and surprised Deborah C with the anthemic Jekk Nużaw Moħħna penned by Joe Chircop to the music of Mark Spiteri Lucas. In the meantime, when it comes to the teenage category, the jury played a pivotal role in selecting the track Bil-Bnadar F'Idejna composed by Miriam Christine and penned by Joe Chircop therefore making Joe Chircop, one of the most decorated men in the competition alongside Mark Spiteri Lucas who together also went onto tele-voting with Deborah C and the aforementioned Jekk Nużaw Moħħna as well as the mychoice.pn award which went to Roseanne Cordina with the track Id-Demm ta' Raymond composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas and penned by Paul Ellul. escflashmalta.com had the opportunity like in the past two years to speak to the winning artist and composer of the track, this year being none other than Deborah C and Mark Spiteri Lucas respectively. The Gozitan singer who is currently reading for a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Malta is extremely happy with the victory stating she indeed 'did not expect it' and ultimately adding that it was even more positive to note that the 'jury and the public agreed unanimously' on the track which they have worked hard to present. She thanked all of the people who supported her from Gozo and Malta as well as her entourage for making this a possibility. Speaking to the composer of the track, he told us that since 2001, he has managed to finish on top on 'five different occasions' making this his 'third victory in six years'. He notes that it was a combination of teamwork which saw to the fact to break records in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza making this the first entry 'to win both the public and jury vote within the same year'. The editorial board would like to congratulate all of the respective winners and better luck next time to all those who tried and did not succeed this time round.
Mike Spiteri, Lawrence Gray, Amber, Annabelle Debono, Miriam Christine, Ira Losco, Tarcisio Barbara, Claudette Buttigieg and Kaya could all note to have at least one thing in common and that is being winners of the elite Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza which has been organized by Media.Link Communications for a numerous number of years, noting that this years' edition will be the twenty-first in total and fifteenth consecutive one as a matter of fact. The committee behind the competition led by Mark Azzopardi and including members of the escflashmalta.com editorial team have worked hard to include a number of innovations in the past two years noting the beginning of a seating area which would definitely keep the audience at bay as well as the official preview videos for each track to help aid in terms of promotion. There is stiff competition this evening, featuring twenty acts that will be leading the way in the Established Category and another four acts who will compete in the Teenage Category as revealed last week on Indifest as shown on NET Television.
The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza will be hosted on The Granaries in Floriana by Christine Haber and Ronald Briffa and will be featuring guest performances by Mike Spiteri who returns as last years' winner as well as Kurt Calleja and his band who represented Malta in this years' Eurovision Song Contest albeit never managing to make it through to the final stage of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. In the meantime, it has to be noted that there will be a number of awards that will be given out this evening including the online voting which has been ongoing through mychoice.pn, the tele-voting through the clips which have been put online and on NET Television throughout the summer and also the jury voting as chosen by Media.Link Communications. The latter two will be important for both categories with a separate award for the Established Category for each and a combined vote for the Teenage Category which will feature 60% Jury and 40% Tele-Voting. escflashmalta.com would like to wish everyone the best of luck and invite the people to attend or tune into NET Television at 20:30 CET to watch the proceedings unravel live.
