In previous years, the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza was a hub for newfound talent, with the winning circle going onto achieve more success in the near future. This was not the case in recent years with established acts and former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Mike Spiteri and Fabrizio Faniello amongst the last four acts to have won the local music competition.

In 2014 though, it seems that originality and talent played a major role in the jury choice with two of the three artists to rank in the top three, making their official debut in the 'Talent Stabbilit' portion of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. Earlier this morning, the Official Facebook Page of the prestigious music competition made the full ranking along with the points given, public. The jury comprised of; Manuel Aquilina, Steve Aquilina, Ivan Borg, Amber and Mike Spiteri.

The winning entry of the public vote last night was "Tħobbni Kif Jien" composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Christopher Azzopardi whilst the triumphant act from the upcoming category was Kurt Cassar and his entry "Inservi" composed by Gillian Attard and Elton Zarb to the lyrics of Emil Calleja Bayliss. In the words of Richard Stilgoe, it seems that there's a light at the end of the tunnel wherever the 2014 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is concerned with the organising committee chaired by Claudette Buttigieg publishing an updated list of semi-finalists. This comes into effect for the simple reason that each vocalist is only permitted to perform just ONE song from the television phase onwards.

At a glance, it seems that out of the SEVEN songs that Domenique had initially qualified with to the second phase, there will still be THREE in the competition with "Mara" composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Paul Ellul being the one she will be performing herself, "Ħamsin Sena Nazzjon" composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas to the lyrics of Paul Ellul being performed in a duet featuring Kaya and Nicole Brincat and "Passaġġ" written by Clinton Paul with a yet to be announced performer.

In the meantime, Josef Tabone has decided to withdraw his second song "Orrizonti" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino as initially reported on escflashmalta.com earlier this morning, meaning that another five entries have been brought into the list, according to the number of points received during the second phase of the competition where the judges were; Olivia Lewis, Andrew Attard, Mro Maurizio Schembri, Sharon Deguara Cipriott and Noel D’Anastas.

The FIVE entries that have now managed to sneak into the Top 30 are none other than; "Ensemble" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino with vocals provided by Johanna Galea, "Ġrajjiet" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino with vocals provided by Michela Dallia, "Ħolma ta' Nazzjon" composed by Mark Debono to the lyrics of Rita Pace with vocals provided by Cherylis Camilleri, "Miraklu" composed by Gillian Attard to the lyrics of Rita Pace with vocals provided by Ashlee Amber and "Ngħidulek Grazzi" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino.

The final change that we could denote in the list below is that Geordie DeBono has opted to keep "Tħobbni Kif Jien" composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Christopher Azzopardi, in the competition with veteran performer; Phyllisienne Brincat. Only two songs remain without a performer at the moment, those being the aforementioned "Passaġġ" and "Mixja li Bdiet" composed by Renato Briffa to the lyrics of Alfred E Baldacchino. escflashmalta.com has been granted permission to speak to the local artists competing within this years' edition of the International Festival of Maltese Song, fourteen in total. Apart from speaking to them about their careers thus far, it is pivotal to denote that we have focused on their participation within this competition in particular and their stance on Maltese being passed onto future generations through the medium of song. The order in which these interviews are being presented does not reflect the running order of the competition. Christian is the twelfth artist and he will be performing the song Raġġ ta' Tama composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Cher Vella.

In recent years, Christian has been mostly living in the shadow of his younger sister, Domenique who managed to garner the second runner-up slot at the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza in 2012 with the song Tama u Kuraġġ composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Cher Vella and then also making it through to the finals of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the track Too Little Too Late composed by Marc Paelinck to the lyrics of Matthias Strasser. Is there any sibling rivalry and do you wish to emulate her success?

I feel very proud of my sister. She has a great talent and she deserved all her success. For sure I would like to have similar success. However, I am glad to see her achieving such success and I hope she continues over the course of her career.

On various occasions, critics within the local music scene have hit out at the public vote system which is ever so present in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza and the International Festival of Maltese Song with revenue, always in the mind of the organisers. You were a beneficiary of the system during the 2009 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza as your entry Madre Perla written by Clinton Paul was awarded with the top spot according to the general public. What is your opinion on tele-voting and do you agree with the role it plays, amounting to a total of just one professional judge?

I believe in the general public and that it should have a voice in the final say. However, I still believe that the public vote should amount to a small proportion compared to the professional jury.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ3Hbao3gQI

It has been around a year since you had last competed in a nationwide competition but the different between the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza and the International Festival of Maltese Song is surely in the fact that whilst one supports playback music, the other one will include the accompaniment of a band led by Maestro Sigmund Mifsud. Do you believe that the addition of live music adds to a music competition and how are you preparing to take to the stage?

I am very prepared for it. It is good that they have introduced again live music in Maltese competitions. Having live music gives the singers great opportunities to sing with a live band.

Raġġ ta' Tama composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Cher Vella is the song that you will be presenting in this years’ edition of the International Festival of Maltese Song. Would you care to explain the meaning behind the lyrics and the genre that the song encompasses?

Raġġ ta’ Tama is a ballad song. The song is about a relationship which has ended and he is asking her to forget the past and start over again.

As a music competition, the International Festival of Maltese Song was the first to promote the national language through the medium of music, eventually followed by L-Għanja tal-Poplu and Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. With the Public Broadcasting Services supporting the event, it makes it only second to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest. Do you believe that there’s a place for this competition within the local music industry and do you support it’s continuation in the years to come?

This festival is one of a high prestige in Malta which promotes the Maltese language. There was a great need for this festival to start again and obviously I will support it’s continuation in the coming years as it gives great opportunity to Maltese talents.

Would you like to say anything to our readers at escflashmalta.com?

Thanks to those who showed the interest in reading my interview.

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is thought to be one of the finest musical institutions in the country noting that original tracks in Maltese are promoted. Some of the most recent winners of the esteemed competitions are none other than Amber, Mike Spiteri, Deborah C and Annabelle Debono with the most successful songwriters along the years being none other than Ray Agius, Mark Spiteri Lucas and Joe Chircop respectively. In recent years, the event has been supported greatly by escflashmalta.com with two board members present in the committee but for the first time in three years, coverage will be from an outsiders' point of view with the coverage being tweaked ever so slightly in order to promote the acts which will be selected.

The Committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza led by Chairman Mark Azzopardi received a total of seventy-nine (79) entries, from which eight (8) were submitted into the Teenage Category leaving the other seventy-one (71) in the Established Category. It is quite intriguing to note that this is quite a disappointing figure considering that over a hundred (100) songs were submitted in totality over the past three years, signalling that the popularity might be waning, something which is rather unfortunate. The jury for the first phase of the competition included none other than Deborah C, winner of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2012; John Perici Calascione, a Disc Jockey; Darren Carabott, student and Kevin Azzopardi, a musician who was also a judge during the second phase last year.

Exclusive: Full Results of the KKI 2012

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza has been well adapted not only to promote the best in local talent but also the language with the competition remaining the only particular background for Maltese, one of the main items which many can identify to be heritage. The pace of the festival went smoothly except for a small minor glitch during one of the latter entries which prompted an immediate restart and ultimately a great response from the audience. The Established Category featured performances from twenty acts in total with a variety of genres well represented whilst the Teenage Category features a total of four entries this time round because of a tie in third place in the second phase of competition which was televised through the programme Indifest as hosted by Ronald Briffa and Christine Haber who were also the comperes for the evening. In the end, the winners of each respective category were agreed upon by the jury panel made up of Mike Spiteri, Ludwig GaleaMandy Micallef Grimaud and Matthew Calleja

It is important to point out that the introduction of the mychoice.pn award was a welcome addition with the online voting racking in multitude of votes from all over the country whilst the tele-voting has always kept things on edge. The top three results were resoundingly met with applause especially as Domenique with the track Tama u Kuraġġ composed by Philip Vella and penned by Cher Vella was the first announced in third place, followed by Marilena Gauci and her song Bl-Ikbar Serjetà composed by Philip Vella and penned by Joe Chircop and then finally a content and surprised Deborah C with the anthemic Jekk Nużaw Moħħna penned by Joe Chircop to the music of Mark Spiteri Lucas. In the meantime, when it comes to the teenage category, the jury played a pivotal role in selecting the track Bil-Bnadar F'Idejna composed by Miriam Christine and penned by Joe Chircop therefore making Joe Chircop, one of the most decorated men in the competition alongside Mark Spiteri Lucas who together also went onto tele-voting with Deborah C and the aforementioned Jekk Nużaw Moħħna as well as the mychoice.pn award which went to Roseanne Cordina with the track Id-Demm ta' Raymond composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas and penned by Paul Ellul. The Gozitan singer who is currently reading for a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Malta is extremely happy with the victory stating she indeed 'did not expect it' and ultimately adding that it was even more positive to note that the 'jury and the public agreed unanimously' on the track which they have worked hard to present. She thanked all of the people who supported her from Gozo and Malta as well as her entourage for making this a possibility. Speaking to the composer of the track, he told us that since 2001, he has managed to finish on top on 'five different occasions' making this his 'third victory in six years'. He notes that it was a combination of teamwork which saw to the fact to break records in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza making this the first entry 'to win both the public and jury vote within the same year'. The editorial board would like to congratulate all of the respective winners and better luck next time to all those who tried and did not succeed this time round.

KKI 2012: A Stunning Spectacle Tonight

Mike Spiteri, Lawrence Gray, Amber, Annabelle Debono, Miriam Christine, Ira Losco, Tarcisio Barbara, Claudette Buttigieg and Kaya could all note to have at least one thing in common and that is being winners of the elite Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza which has been organized by Media.Link Communications for a numerous number of years, noting that this years' edition will be the twenty-first in total and fifteenth consecutive one as a matter of fact. The committee behind the competition led by Mark Azzopardi and including members of the escflashmalta.com editorial team have worked hard to include a number of innovations in the past two years noting the beginning of a seating area which would definitely keep the audience at bay as well as the official preview videos for each track to help aid in terms of promotion. There is stiff competition this evening, featuring twenty acts that will be leading the way in the Established Category and another four acts who will compete in the Teenage Category as revealed last week on Indifest as shown on NET Television.

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza will be hosted on The Granaries in Floriana by Christine Haber and Ronald Briffa and will be featuring guest performances by Mike Spiteri who returns as last years' winner as well as Kurt Calleja and his band who represented Malta in this years' Eurovision Song Contest albeit never managing to make it through to the final stage of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. In the meantime, it has to be noted that there will be a number of awards that will be given out this evening including the online voting which has been ongoing through mychoice.pn, the tele-voting through the clips which have been put online and on NET Television throughout the summer and also the jury voting as chosen by Media.Link Communications. The latter two will be important for both categories with a separate award for the Established Category for each and a combined vote for the Teenage Category which will feature 60% Jury and 40% Tele-Voting. escflashmalta.com would like to wish everyone the best of luck and invite the people to attend or tune into NET Television at 20:30 CET to watch the proceedings unravel live.

KKI 2012: Having a Look at 'Kburin Bik'

Lacking sheer talent has sometimes become a turbulent element within the music industry when on a foreign or a local scale but then again, there is more to that especially when an artist manages to bring forth a successful track to the table, one which is somewhat entitled to become a hit whoever gets a hand on performing that respective song. There is more to talent actually noting that the performance also plays a predominant role due to the fact that people are seriously won over through such a trait. The local music industry has been the basis for a number of artists who are extremely talented and could ultimately be successful in foreign waters should the right opportunities be given but then again, some of the upcoming talent has the likability factor and lack that certain something which would give them the edge to become successful renowned performers. One of such artists is surely the next individual to have made it to the finals of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza being, Christian Azzopardi who will be giving a rendition of the song Kburin Bik composed by Philip Vella and penned by Joe Chircop. He is performing in the sixth place and got into the competition following the fact that his sister, Domenique qualified with five songs in total, having the opportunity to give him a track and withdrawing the others completely. One of the pivotal moments of success for all of the entries competing in this years' edition of the competition is the shooting of the official preview videos which have been uploaded online through viral website, YouTube with further representation of the video given on escflashmalta.com. The committee along with Media.Link Communications thought that this is the way forward in terms of promotion.

Translating the title of the song in English virtue of our foreign readers, it would ultimately translate into We Are Proud of You and the lyrics are very generic when it comes to the competition in itself noting that it speaks about the Maltese Islands and the history that it had to encounter with several different rulers taking centre stage especially the English. Nevertheless, the faith of the country was left in foreign hands and this is something that was not boding well with the people who finally took a stance towards this and fought for independence in hope that it would be achieved. In fact, they succeeded and for the very first time, the local affairs were given to the Maltese to govern with foreign affairs left in the hands of the colonizer. Christian Azzopardi has made it into the finals of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza on two respective occasions, the first time being in 2009 with Madre Perla for which he was awarded the award of the televoting and the second time with the track Venerdi. Christian has been trying to break through in a number of other local competitions as well but has not found the right track to take him all the way into the Malta Eurovision Song Contest either with his other experiences coming on ONE Television through the Summer Hit Song Contest where he had finished in third place with the track Caruso. He will surely be doing his best to perform this track well even through it was not originally his to begin with. It is also worth noting that he is the older brother of Domenique Azzopardi who is also competing in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, albeit for the first time. It will be the third time that they will be competing against one other in a competition of such caliber.

The composer of the track is the already mentioned Philip Vella who has only won the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza on one occasion, that being in 2009 thanks to Annabelle Debono and the track 1964 which he wrote alongside Mark Amaira. Despite this though, he is one of the most successful songwriters in the history of the local music scene having been to the Eurovision Song Contest on five different occasions and achieving a runner-up finish in 2002 thanks to Ira Losco and also making it through to the finals in 2004 thanks to a duet between Julie & Ludwig. He has also submitted many tracks in foreign national finals making it through to shows in The Netherlands and Norway amongst others. On the lyrical side of this particular track, there is Joe Chircop, who is definitely a familiar name in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza having ended up as the winner on two occasions alongside the musical styling of Mark Spiteri Lucas with the victories coming in 2007 with the song Dan Hu L-Mument and also in 2008 with the track Flimkien Nistgħu Nirnexxu. It is also worth noting that he won the Teenage Category last year with the track Ejjew Nieqfu performed by Angelica Portelli ahead of Michela Dalli and Michela Galea in second and third place respectively. You can listen to his entry in this years' competition just below whilst also hoping you will keep on reading escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news about the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

The very first programme of any season is always going to be somewhat an intriguing one and this is due to the fact that there would be expectations and for yet another year, Media.Link Communications have set up the perfect preparation for the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza which is heading into the twenty first year following last years' epic anniversary. There have been a number of changes which have been implemented this time round thanks for a host of ideas brought forward by the committee of the competition led by Chairman Mark Azzopardi. One of the most interesting is surely the promotion of the songs just before they are performed on the programme. The preview videos were recorded at NET Television by a professional crew and then uploaded through viral website, YouTube but nevertheless, we encourage you to get to know the people in the competition better through Indifest and escflashmalta.com so that one could associate a track to a particular performer before ultimately voting.

The 2012 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza features a host of talent noting that there are a number of newcomers as well as individuals who have been rightfully earning their place in the local music industry. Apart from meeting three (3) people each week, two (2) from the Established Category and one from the Teenage Category, there is also a weekly special guest, one who has somewhat become popular through a number of events but also brings about experience from this particular competition, one of the two that still promote the Maltese language through the medium of song. In fact, last week, the programme had the proud pleasure of presenting Mike Spiteri who was the winner of last years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza ewith the track B'Rieda tal-Azzar written by Ray Agius but then again, many people would remember a number of his contributions to the competition including ones such as Grazzi Mill-Qalb and Rebbiegħa Ġdida amongst others.

Once more, returning as a producer for this episode and for all of the series is none other than Mark Azzopardi who is also the chairman of the committee behind the competition. It is somewhat imperative to have such a distinctive persona behind both the programme and the competition so that there is a merge in terms of decisions. There has been a lot of work done behind the scenes to make sure that all of the finalists receive the same amount of promotion noting the videos, the photo shoot and also the appearances on the actual programme which is being hosted by Christine Haber and Ronald Briffa, two names who clearly need no introduction to the viewers of NET Television and also other broadcasters. In this weeks' episode, the main guests from the Established Category will be none other than Christian Azzopardi with the song Kburin Bik composed by Philip Vella and penned by Joe Chircop and also Francesca Scerri with the track Mill-Bidu Nett composed by Elton Zarb and penned by Rita Pace. The former did not actually make it through with the vocals of the man noting that finalist, Domenique Azzopardi decided to give him her song.

From the teenage Cateogry, there will also be a live performance by Maria Debono who will be performing the song Aħna ż-Żagħżagħ composed by Kaya and penned by Joe Chircop. The special guest for this weeks' edition of Indifest will be none other than former Eurovision Song Contest representative Glen Vella who had failed to qualify to the finals of the event by just one point having performed the track One Life to his best possible abroad. Nevertheless, he had been in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza on many occasions with his last performance coming back in 2009 with the track Kuntent composed by Sean Vella and penned by Philip Vella which finished in tenth place during the evening. Therefore, with such a jam packed programme this evening, we encourage you to turn on NET Television at 20:30 and watch yet another Indifest hosted by Ronald Briffa and Christine Haber with all of the exciting questions posed by James Cassar.
