On the 25th and 26th January 2014, the Catholic Institute in Floriana played host to The Celebration Pop and Musicals Concert produced by Spiteri Lucas Entertainment, in recognition of their ten years in the entertainment industry. Ample media coverage was given to both evenings due to an impressive line-up, one which included none other than former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Debbie Scerri (1997) and Ludwig Galea (2004) whilst also featuring Pamela, Neville Refalo, Dorothy Bezzina, Eleanor Spiteri, Roger Tirazona and Ivan Spiteri Lucas who have all been part of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in one year, or another.

The show was divided into two (2) acts; Pop and Musicals, in order to maintain the status of what the public were anticipating although in my opinion, it was the second act which shined through, especially with the vocal ranges of certain artists. Looking through the list of numbers once more, I was impressed towards the end of the concert, noting that the phrase save the best for last still exists in show business. Ludwig Galea and Dorothy Bezzina stole the limelight with their rendition of Les Miserables’ Master of the House whilst Pamela was effortless during her take on Wishing You Were Somehow Hear Again from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera.

Nevertheless, when together, the ensemble gave magnificent renditions, especially of One Day More, the classic that will never go unnoticed from Les Miserables. Singing, one of the most prestigious arts around was aided by another form of entertainment, dancing with the Dancel Dance Team directed by Celaine Buhagiar present in various numbers, adding a touch of visual spectacle to the whole show. Whilst the lead vocalists were almost spot on throughout the entire performance, bar a couple of notes from certain specific individuals, it is important to point out the masterful children’s choir under the direction of Neville Refalo, renditions got the audience clapping mid-way through performances.

The lead vocalists are essential and prominent in every show of Spiteri Lucas Entertainment, but one has to point out the opportunities given to the backing vocalists; Claudio Teuma Castelleti, Abigail Critien and Amelia Hope, the latter of which also had the pleasure of performing with the main cast during the first act. A rising star, who is working with renowned songwriter and producer Rene Mamo had a busy repertoire on her hands but dealt with it like a true seasoned professional. Maltese as a language has been described as one of the most notorious identifiable elements and therefore, it does go to show that the music industry takes a liking to the use of the aforementioned method of speech in a number of competitions including L-Għanja tal-Poplu and the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. The focus is on the latter due to the large amount of submitted entries every year although it has to be noted that quantity does not really mean quality. Nevertheless, most of the winners have been merited their top ranking position especially when noting that the most notable performers to come out were none other than; Eleanor Cassar, Ira Losco, Claudia Faniello, Nadine Axisa, Roger Tirazona, Miriam Christine, Lawrence Gray, Amber, Mike Spiteri and Claudette Pace amongst others. Garnering entry into the competition is not easy and therefore, Spiteri Lucas Entertainment and the Committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza thought up the idea to promote a wildcard entry which would be granted through a performance competition on television show; Sas-Sitta which airs every Saturday afternoon on NET Television with Ray Attard and former Eurovision Song Contest representative; Debbie Scerri as hosts.

As a matter of fact, there was renewed interest in the competition following the fact that last years' winner; Simone Gauci spoke positive of the experience and the opportunity to perform on the stage of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. It would definitely be a coup to have a complete newcomer perform during the evening but nevertheless, the shortlist of semi-finalists in this years' Passport 2 Indifest includes two former finalists in the form of Marie Claire Attard Bason and Ana-Maria Grima whilst some others have also competed in the teenage portion of the competition including Cherise Attard, Mikaela Bajada and Dorcas Debono. Other artists who have made it through this time round have experienced performances in front of an audience with Karen DeBattista having been in the Malta Summer Hit Song Contest, Cynthia Attard performing in the pre-selection stage of the 2010 Malta Eurosong, Letizia Seychell and Nicola Marie Cutajar taking part in Don't Stop Me Now. The final act to make it through was Claudio Castelletti who most recently was a backing the Spiteri Lucas Entertainment show having been scouted last year during the same competition. Passport 2 Indifest continues to unravel as the jury hear the ten semi-finalists once more and decide, who the final four should comprise of.
