Finland: Softengine Win UMK and Set for Denmark

YLE, the public broadcaster in Finland has just brought the curtain down on yet another astonishing national selection, one which represents upcoming talent in the Scandinavian country. Following several heats, and a semi-final, the decision has officially been made and Softengine will represent Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest with the track Something Better co-written by Topi Latukka and Henri Oskár. It was definitely not an easy ride for them, but they managed to beat stiff competition from singer/songwriter Mikko Pohjola and group MIAU who finished in second and third place, respectively.

Finland, is one of the countries competing in the second semi-final alongside Malta, who in turn will be selecting their entry on the 8th February 2014 at the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre in a star-studded evening hosted by Moira Delia, Gianluca and Ira Losco. Whilst making it to the final in 2013, Krista did not attract the attention of many when it came to the voting and languished in one of the bottom places. This pop/rock entry with a slight Coldplay-like sound will surely attract the votes though. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all the latest news about the 2014 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, being staged in Copenhagen, Denmark.

According to reliable sources, Emma Marone born in Florence, Italy in 1984 will represent Italy in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest with the energetic song La mia citta (My Home Town). The track is included in her forth-coming album named Schiena vs Schiena (Back to Back). It seems clear that this year Italian National Broadcaster, RAI is opting for an internal selection which means that popular Italian showcase Sanremo will have nothing to do with the Italian selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. Emma Marone won Amici di Maria de Filippi, an Italian Talent show in 2010 becoming one of the top selling artists in Italy.

Emma will follow the steps of Marco Mengoni who won X-Factor Italy and represented the lovely Mediterranean country last year. Emma won Sanremo festival in 2012 with her hit song Non e’ l’Inferno (It’s not hell). So far the talented but down to earth singer Emma has published 1 EP, 3 great albums and 15 singles. She has received 2 Multi platinum discs, 14 Platinum discs and 2 Gold discs. Last year, Emma was selected as one of the artistic directors of one of the teams of the show Amici di Maria de Filippi.

Italy will be voting in the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest and they will be able to vote for Malta as we will be part of the first part of the second semi-final. Will another product from a popular Italian talent show win Eurovision for Italy? We have to wait and see! In the meantime, we’re still waiting for an official confirmation from Radio Televisione Italiana, RAI! Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all the latest news.

Despite the rumours of an internal selection, it seems that the Israeli Broadcasting Authority have amended their selection process ever so slightly with a national final set to take place in March. Three (3) artists will be taking part in the showcase, with two (2) selected by the public broadcaster, and another one chosen through an open call for artists. Several acts have been asked to take part yet rejected the invitation, and these include none other than Ronnie Dloomy, Raz Shmueli and Kathleen Reiter, the latter who was the favourite at the 2013 selection process but withdrew after a series of allegations that the broadcaster had paved the way for her victory.

Nevertheless, other artists have already declared their interest in representing Israel at the 2014 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest including Chen Aharoni, a runner-up in the 2011 edition of Kdam, as well as Maya Buskila, a favourite of the general public with whom negotiations have fell on a series of occasions. IBA, the public broadcaster is set to make a formal announcement with regards to the selection participants in due course, but until then, we wait. At last years’ edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, Israel failed to make the final with their entry Rak Bishvilo performed by Moran Mazor. Eurovision '14: Theme Art Officially Presented

#JoinUs, the slogan of next years’ edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark under the hospice of host broadcaster, DR has officially been unveiled in a proper theme ask which will support the competition and give it a proper identity. Executive Producer, Pernille Gaardbo went on record stating ‘the Eurovision diamond symbolises what the competition means to us: A hub that is at once sparkling and strong. Diamond has lots of different sides and shows the diversity and the richness that will be on stage at the Eurovision Song Contest.’

She then went onto add ‘it emphasises visually the approach we have for the contest in 2014: The rawness of the B&W Arena combined with the sparkling show, and in the middle of the stage, the diamond as a unifying force, right where it's all done.’ The general idea is that the graphic selected, supports the concept of the diamond hence why the slogan has been put within the actual diamond. The idea of having a slogan and a theme art is something which was kick-started back in 2008 due to the fact that the heart solo had taken a centre stage and had also become difficult to alter. Earlier this week, Ovi posted a teaser of a brand new song, entitled Miracle, which also happens to be a duet with renowned female vocalist Paula whom he had already joined forces to represent Romania at the 2010 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, to much success with Playing With Fire finishing in third place. The thirty (30) second teaser makes use of the generic logo of the 2014 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest and the phrase ‘We Are Coming’ signalling that they will either be competing in a national final along with other artists or presumably having already been selected by the broadcaster, TVR to carry the honours in Copenhagen, Denmark.

In recent days, escflashmalta.com has been speaking to a number of individuals concerned with the participation of Romania in the international event and indications are clear that an internal selection is taking place with the final contractual details taking place at the moment. An announcement is imminent in order for Paula and Ovi to kick start their promotional tour as well as spread the word out that they are indeed back for a second time. The renowned duo are held in high regard both at home and abroad, having been given the opportunity to appear as guests and co-host the national selection on more than one occasion since their participation. Germany: NDR Surprises with Strong Line-Up

NDR, public broadcaster of Germany in collaboration with production company Brainpool have had several meetings with the biggest record labels in the country to select seven (7) acts that represent positive qualities to take forward to the Eurovision Song Contest, which in 2014 is taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark. An eighth (8th) participant will be selected through a public selection featuring young, upcoming talent and from there onwards, two (2) songs for each artist will be put forward for the national selection, which is set to take place on the 13th March 2014 in Cologne.

In recent weeks, there have been several rumours with regards to the artists that were being considered by both the broadcaster and the production company and the editorial team at escflashmalta.com believes that Germany have gone for a versatile mixture of talent and renowned stardom. Following three (3) years of success, finishing in the top ten with the likes of Lena Meyer-Landrut and Roman Lob, Germany took to the stage earlier this year with the ever so popular Cascada whose song Glorious failed to set the scoreboard alight, managing a lower mid-table position by the end of the evening.

  • Das Gezeichnete Ich
  • Madeline Juno
  • MarieMarie
  • Oceana
  • Santiano
  • The Baseballs
  • Unheilig

Whilst all of the acts have material which has already been officially published, it has to be noted that The Baseballs, Unheilig and Oceana are three stars across the nation with fan-bases even beyond their own country and therefore, kudos to the German public broadcaster for managing such an impressive line-up in hope of improving their results at the Eurovision Song Contest. As one of the Big Five countries, Germany enjoys a free passage to the final round of the Eurovision Song Contest, a privilege it enjoys with the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Italy. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news as soon as it becomes available.

After a two year absence, TVP, the Polish public broadcaster has confirmed their return to the Eurovision Song Contest in May 2014. They have confirmed that a submission to be present in Copenhagen was made and details for a national final shall be announced sometime in January. Poland made their debut in 1994, when Edyta Górniak represented this country with the song To nie ja!. She managed to make Poland's debut a successful one by achieving 2nd place on the final night.

After that year Poland achieved a string of disappointing results except 2003 when Ice Troje feat. Real McCoy achieved 7th place. When the European Broadcasting Union made a number of amendments to the format of the Eurovision Song Contest, adding the semi-final stage to the competition, the results became even more disappointing with qualification assured only once, in 2008, with For Life performed by American/Polish singer Isis Gee. Poland's last entry at the Eurovision Song Contest was Jestem sung by Magdalena Tul back in 2011 but unfortunately, it did not garner a lot of support and finished in last place. In 2014, Malta will be represented at the Eurovision Song Contest by two artists, one which will be the winner of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest and the other being Gaia Cauchi, winner of this years' edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest with the track The Start, co-written alongside Elton Zarb, Matt Mercieca and Gillian Attard. In a bid to revamp the competition, the European Broadcasting Union has made a number of alterations with one of them being that the winners of the Senior and Junior editions of the international showcase performing at each others' event. Emmelie de Forest, winner on behalf of Denmark with the song Only Teardrops earlier this year was a special guest last night.

It is somewhat surreal to see a local artist being invited by the European Broadcasting Union and the host broadcaster, DR to perform at the Eurovision Song Contest whilst it is more unbelievable that Malta has succeeded in winning the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. I had personally gone on record stating that we would win the event but the feeling of winning it is sinking in ever so slightly. Once more, as editor-in-chief of escflashmalta.com, I would like to congratulate the Maltese delegation on a well earned victory and also our special team of reviewers, including none other than Trevor Fenech, Daniel Testa and Sophie DeBattista. A notable mention goes out to our Head of Communications, Emil Calleja Bayliss for leading the report. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news.

The selection process in Latvia for the past couple of years, that entitled Dziesma will be returning with a total of two (2) semi-finals and a final being the total format.
