Malta: GħTP 2013 Running Order Revealed

In 1973, the Youth Travel Circle organised the first edition of L-Għanja tal-Poplu, a popular song festival in which all of the entries have to be original and specificially in Maltese. Amongst the former winners of the competition, there are several artists who have gained a solid reputation over the years including; Philip Vella, Enzo Gusman, Glen Vella, Eleanor Cassar, Janvil and Corazon. A mixture of upcoming and established performers and songwriters are to be noted in this years' competition which comprises of nineteen (19) entries in total. The shortlist was decided by a professional judging panel who surely looked at several elements including vocals, lyrics and music along with the final product altogether.

Frank O'Neill and Valerie Vella have been chosen as hosts of this years' competition as revealed exclusively by escflashmalta.com earlier on whilst Sir Temi Żammit Hall will be the venue as has been the case in recent years. Tickets which have been priced at €10 could be purchased here. L-Għanja tal-Poplu is a competition which prides itself on having live musical instruments during every performance. As a matter of fact, despite having other competitions in which original songs in Maltese are exhibited, it is the only one with such an element, thus making it truly unique. Exclusive: Full Results of the KKI 2012

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza has been well adapted not only to promote the best in local talent but also the language with the competition remaining the only particular background for Maltese, one of the main items which many can identify to be heritage. The pace of the festival went smoothly except for a small minor glitch during one of the latter entries which prompted an immediate restart and ultimately a great response from the audience. The Established Category featured performances from twenty acts in total with a variety of genres well represented whilst the Teenage Category features a total of four entries this time round because of a tie in third place in the second phase of competition which was televised through the programme Indifest as hosted by Ronald Briffa and Christine Haber who were also the comperes for the evening. In the end, the winners of each respective category were agreed upon by the jury panel made up of Mike Spiteri, Ludwig GaleaMandy Micallef Grimaud and Matthew Calleja

It is important to point out that the introduction of the mychoice.pn award was a welcome addition with the online voting racking in multitude of votes from all over the country whilst the tele-voting has always kept things on edge. escflashmalta.com had the opportunity like in the past two years to speak to the winning artist and composer of the track, this year being none other than Deborah C and Mark Spiteri Lucas respectively. The Gozitan singer who is currently reading for a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Malta is extremely happy with the victory stating she indeed 'did not expect it' and ultimately adding that it was even more positive to note that the 'jury and the public agreed unanimously' on the track which they have worked hard to present. She thanked all of the people who supported her from Gozo and Malta as well as her entourage for making this a possibility. Speaking to the composer of the track, he told us that since 2001, he has managed to finish on top on 'five different occasions' making this his 'third victory in six years'. He notes that it was a combination of teamwork which saw to the fact to break records in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza making this the first entry 'to win both the public and jury vote within the same year'. The editorial board would like to congratulate all of the respective winners and better luck next time to all those who tried and did not succeed this time round.

KKI 2012: A Stunning Spectacle Tonight

Mike Spiteri, Lawrence Gray, Amber, Annabelle Debono, Miriam Christine, Ira Losco, Tarcisio Barbara, Claudette Buttigieg and Kaya could all note to have at least one thing in common and that is being winners of the elite Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza which has been organized by Media.Link Communications for a numerous number of years, noting that this years' edition will be the twenty-first in total and fifteenth consecutive one as a matter of fact. The committee behind the competition led by Mark Azzopardi and including members of the escflashmalta.com editorial team have worked hard to include a number of innovations in the past two years noting the beginning of a seating area which would definitely keep the audience at bay as well as the official preview videos for each track to help aid in terms of promotion. There is stiff competition this evening, featuring twenty acts that will be leading the way in the Established Category and another four acts who will compete in the Teenage Category as revealed last week on Indifest as shown on NET Television.

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza will be hosted on The Granaries in Floriana by Christine Haber and Ronald Briffa and will be featuring guest performances by Mike Spiteri who returns as last years' winner as well as Kurt Calleja and his band who represented Malta in this years' Eurovision Song Contest albeit never managing to make it through to the final stage of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. The 21st edition of the annual Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza will be taking place next week with preparations now in full swing with the organizing committee making the final arrangements as they prepare for the rehearsals which will be taking place in just seven days time noting that the final run through would be taking place on the morning of the competition itself. The venue as has been the case almost every year except when weather wasn't permitted have been the Granaries in Floriana which have now hosted some of the most amazing concerts in history including those of Joseph Calleja for the past three years. Nevertheless, one week before the festival does take place, Indifest will be hosted and it will be quite the show because apart from the weekly performances which people have come to expect from the acts taking part in the Established Category, there will also be the revelation of the finalists of the Teenage Category along with a performance by a special guest as has also come to be expected each week.

This year, the teenage category will be crowning the fifth winner having seen the likes of Gabrielle Massa, Dian Bland, Cherylis Camilleri and Angelica Portelli triumph in the past four years since the competition began back in 2008 to resounding success. The difference between the past and the present though is the way that the result has been worked out noting that the jury had a 60% say in the final proceedings this time round with the public still having a 40% weighing in the outcome. Ultimately this was the way forward with talent being given the most importance. This evening, the performers of the ten participating entries will be present in the studio awaiting the announcement of the finalists as made by Christine Haber, Ronald Briffa and the Chairman of the Committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza; Mark Azzopardi. Prior to the announcement this evening, we would like to remind you that you can still watch the videos of the songs below.

02. Bil-Bnadar F'Idejna - Sarah Bonnici (Miriam Christine / Joe Chircop)

03. Ftakar Fl-Imħabba - Jade Amber Muscat (Kaya / Christopher Azzopardi)

04. Ħbieb ta' Veru - Maria u Justine (Kaya / Christopher Azzopardi)

05. Il-Libertà - Antoine u Kayleigh (Ray Agius / Michael Vella Haber / Evelyn Saliba La Rosa)

06. L-Ewwel Imħabba - Darlene Sammut (Kaya / Rita Pace)

07. Niftakar Fik - Derrick Schembri (Dominic Cini / Stephen Baldacchino)

08. Noli - Natalya Galdes (Rita Pace)

09. X'Qaltli L-Arzella - Antonella Rapa (Mark Spiteri Lucas / Joe Friggieri)

10. X'Sar Minnhom - Mikaela Bajada (Miriam Christine / Joe Chircop)

This evening, the performances will continue from the Established Category as well noting that taking to the stage this evening will be Kylie Coleiro with the track Ħalluni composed by PhiliP Vella and penned by Joe Chircop as well as Corinne Caruana who had to reschedule as she fell ill a couple of weeks ago and was unable to attend. She will be performing the track Dan Mhux Tmiem composed by Mark Scicluna and penned by Rita Pace. In the meantime, there will also be a special performance this evening given by none other than the reigning winner of the Teenage Category of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, that being the Gozitan Angelica Portelli who will be giving a performance of the track Ejjew Nieqfu composed by Miriam Christine and penned by Joe Chircop. This has to be the most filled programme of the series but nevertheless, headlined by Christine Haber and Ronald Briffa as hosts, it will be quite the showcase this evening. Make sure that you tune to NET Television for the final programme of Indifest before the actual Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza has firmly established itself as a leading competition in the local music scene with the culture calender singling out the occasion as one of the main days in which the national language of the country is promoted through the medium of music. In fact, it is to be pointed out that the showcase is only one of two which promotes the respective language and will surely remain popular as the years go by due to the fact that the long list of participants represents the positive outcome of the industry. There aren't many things which could be said to be common between the likes of Claudette Pace, Claudia Faniello, Eleanor Cassar, Mike Spiteri, Miriam Christine, Amber, Lawrence Gray, Ira Losco, Kaya and Annabelle Debono but one of them is surely that they have all been crowned winners of the event since it returned way back in 1997 following a break of ten years. Those who have gone onto finish in high placings have also established their position amongst the elite going onto represent the country in the Eurovision Song Contest for example. The committee behind the competition is led by leading television host Mark Azzopardi who is also acting as producer of the flagship programme Indifest which airs every Tuesday night hosted by Christine Haber and Ronald Briffa with special interviews done by James Cassar.

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza will be hosted for the twenty-first time this year actually and features a host of new, upcoming talent, especially individuals who were part of the teenage category just a couple of years back, rightfully earning their place in the local music industry in recent months. Apart from meeting four (4) people each week, three (3) from the Established Category and one (1) from the Teenage Category, there are also a number of weekly special guests. Last weeks' edition of the programme featured none other than Georgina who represented Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1991 alongside Paul Giordimaina with the song Could It Be securing sixth place before returning as a composer in 1992 for the track Little Child, then as a backing vocalist for This Time performed by William Mangion in 1993 and finally as a composer for the track Another Summer Night which represented Malta in 2001. Also joining Georgina was Janvil who has most notoriously finished in the runner-up position at both the Malta Eurosong as well as the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza in the past.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2DVZq1LDlc

As one could note above, this will be quite a special week actually because there will be not two (2) people from the established category but three (3) and this is due to the fact that there was a particular week in which the programme was not broadcast due to a holiday. This years' programme is being produced by none other than Media.Link Communications and thus NET Television but the individuals concerned are Lisa Libreri as well as Mark Azzopardi, who as mentioned above is also the chairman of the committee behind the competition. The decision to have him on a dual role is one of the best ones that has ever been taken and this is because the competition is best promoted in this manner. The first act to take to this stage this evening during Indifest will be none other than Roseanne Cordina who will be performing the track Id-Demm ta' Raymond composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas and penned by Paul Ellul. The second guest during the evening who will also be competing is Corinne Caruana who is set to perform the track Dan Mhux Tmiem composed by Mark Scicluna and penned by Rita Pace.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nzZfLNruPU

The third track to be performed during the evening will be the one by Danica Muscat who is also a returnee from last years' competition. She will be performing the track Indipendenti composed by Philip Vella and penned by Cher Vella. In the meantime, there is also a performance from the teenage category and that will be quite important so to speak due to the fact that the performance will be assessed by a panel of appointed judges in the coming weeks. The entry to be performed this evening is Bil-Bnadar F'Idejna composed by Miriam Christine and penned by Joe Chircop with a vocal performance by Sarah Bonnici. It is to be noted that despite the fact that tele-voting plays a very important role in this latter category, this year, there has been a reduction in the respective percentage owing to the final outcome with just 40% attributed leaving the other 60% to the jury as already mentioned above. The idea is to make sure that the people who make it through to the final stage of the competition ultimately deserve to be there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeD4O8iQB9o

The programme will as always have a special guest or two and escflashmalta.com is proud to exclusively reveal that NET Television has managed to attract none other than Natasha and Charlene back to the world of television as they intend to comeback for a special appearance tomorrow having been past winners of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, first time in 2004 with the song L-Arka Tal-Liberta' and second time with the group Is-Sitta performing the song Iva Nistgħu Nirnexxu in 2008 respectively. They have not appeared since the 2009 Malta Eurosong and this will be their first major television performance in three years. In the meantime, another former winner of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza will also be present tomorrow with Nadine Axisa dropping in for a special performance having just officially gone in hiatus from local competitions a couple of weeks back. Make sure to tune into NET Television tonight at 20:30 CET to watch another filled programme of Indifest.

KKI 2012: Having a Look at 'Dan Mhux Tmiem'

There has been a popular saying that talent does indeed come by the dozen especially when it comes to Malta and whilst there have been glowing reviews that artists are somewhat extremely gifted in the Islands, many have not yet witnessed some of the people who call themselves stars after having appeared on certain reality television programmes thinking that they could ultimately perform amongst not only the elite of the local scene but even of the foreign one. Nevertheless, this is not the case for the next performer at hand who came out of one of such shows. I am referring to none other than the charming Corinne Caruana who is the eight performer in the series to be further analyzed as she bids in this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza which is swiftly moving into the twenty first edition in total. The track that has been given to Corinne Caruana composed by Mark Scicluna and penned by Rita Pace bears the title Dan Mhux Tmiem which easily translates into This Is Not The End. All of the artists and their respective entries are receiving a lot of exposure including on NET Television and through viral website, YouTube following an official video recorded for all respective entries, a decision taken up by Media.Link Communications at the board of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. In the meantime, escflashmalta.com is also giving their readers an insight into the tracks of this years' competition.

One of the most common elements and themes in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza throughout the years has surely been the subject of relationships and romance and this is no different actually but then again, despite the subject in itself, the lyrics and the music blend extremely well together performed by the Maltese mother tongue giving it a special tinge. Success for such songs has been recorded in the past and that is somewhat the decision to take up such an element on yet another occasion. The track is somewhat open to a variety of interpretations and that could be a reason why it could become personal to different people listening to it. In my respective understanding, I see a woman whose relationship with a man is being forbidden due to an unfortunate and therefore, despite being cut short, it will never end because they will manage to overcome the difficulties and he will always be close to hold her tight just like a mother holds her new born infant. The composer behind this song is definitely not a newcomer to the local music scene noting that in a short space of time, Mark Scicluna has grown into being a notable lyricist and composer with his best known song being last years' second runner-up of the same competition known as Eternita' (Eternity) even though he has also worked with upcoming artist Karen Debattista amongst others.

Moving onto the lyricist of this track, a woman who does not really need an introduction. I am referring to none other than singer/songwriter Rita Pace who knows her way within a local competition having been competing in a variety of competitions throughout the years. The very fact of the matter remains that she does not really hold the best results in terms of an artist especially when it comes to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest where she has taken originality on a different scale. Nevertheless, she is a veteran and she showed that in the past two editions of the Għanja tal-Poplu competition actually. She was part of the competition in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza as a performer last year with the song Kuraġġ (Courage) and left with a trophy for penning the lyrics of the same aforementioned Eternita' (Eternity). The performer of this track is the upcoming Corinne Carauana, a girl who first came to television through the programme Don't Stop Me Now hosted by Eileen Montesin and Christine Haber, the latter of which is also the female host of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. Throughout the series, her performances shined and she was though by the three judges on the panel including former Eurovision Song Contest representative Moira Stafrace that she would do well in the scene. She entered her first competition in the 2012 edition of the Għanja tal-Poplu with the song Barnuża Bajda (White Hood) but this is her debut in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. You can see the official video of the song just below and stay tuned to escflashmalta.com as well as the page of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza for more updates in the coming days.
