In just one (1) week, the semi-final of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest will be taking place at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre under the hospice of the Public Broadcasting Services. Earlier this afternoon, it was officially confirmed that former representatives; Gianluca and Ira Losco as well as veteran host, Moira Delia will be undertaking the roles of hosts of this years’ prestigious competition being aired on Television Malta.

Prior to their appearance in the competition, they will be taking to the WE Studios later on this evening for one last promotional effort at Xarabank, hosted by Peppi Azzopardi. All of the artists competing in the semi-final in a weeks' time will be present for a series of chats, fact-finding missions and more entertainment which is very much reminiscent of a weekend show rather than a late night chat show. One of the artists will eventually follow in the footsteps of Gianluca and his entry Tomorrow co-written by Boris Cezek and Dean Muscat, which finished in eighth place, the best result for Malta at the international competition since 2005. In 2014, the Public Broadcasting Services, responsible for Malta’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest decided to conduct a national final with just twenty (20) entries, rather than the typical twenty-four (24) which many had become accustomed to in recent years. Promotion is always vital, and escflashmalta.com has sent each entry to a professional panel of individuals in the music industry, who have in turn passed on their comments. This year, we have asked the likes of John Scott from the United States, Martin Isherwood from the United Kingdom, Sharon Vaughn from the United States but based in Sweden, Stano Simor from the Czech Republic and Greig Watts from the United Kingdom to do the honours. Today’s review is centred on Brand New Day, composed by Elton Zarb to the lyrics of Matthew Mercieca with vocals provided by Davinia.

Davinia, a resounding newcomer to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest a mere twelve (12) months ago, having entered the competition for the very first time with the song Betrayed, also composed by Elton Zarb to the lyrics of Matthew Mercieca. At 21, she is one of the youngest artists from this years’ crop of participants but nevertheless, experience should definitely not be an issue considering that she has already taken the local music scene by storm, earning a Best New Artist nomination at the Bay Music Awards in 2011 following an astonishing breakthrough with tracks such as Sail Away and Bottled My Teardrops. Following her success in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, Davinia launched a follow-up single entitled You Are My Home to which she also filmed a music video, earning her several positive acclaim and once more a place on Malta’s Top Ten with Nathan D on 89.7 Bay.

Elton Zarb and Matthew Mercieca, a collaboration which until not too long ago was inexistent in song-writing noting that Davinia was the one who brought them together, in order to work on a track for this competition specifically. That song, already mentioned above, Betrayed, led to a successful third place finish. Nevertheless, this proved to be the beginning of an extremely successful collaboration with Gillian Attard and Gaia Cauchi calling upon the talented duo to write a song which would ultimately represent Malta at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. The Start, as it was titled ended up winning the international showcase giving Malta their first ever victory in an event organised by the European Broadcasting Union. It is worth pointing out that not only are they working with Davinia this time round, but they also have a second song, Until We Meet Again sung by Deborah C.

The Critics Speak Out

Rating: 73%

John Scott: The hook is really strong. I like the post-chorus part especially. The singer also has very good energy. She is instantly likeable. The song is very fun. Overall, this one is very memorable.

Martin Isherwood: Good voice although thinish sounding. Chorus has nothing to do with the title. Melodically strong. 'Hey how you doing' 'Come back to me' 'Hard to handle' 'Next to me' 'Oooh ooh' 'Boom boom'. All I want is you' - are all stronger titles than the actual title 'Brand new day'. Hints of Adele rubbing shoulders with The Nolans. Strong song but hard to imagine it would stand out in the Eurovision crowd.

Sharon Vaughn: Dig Deeper, people! Even on fun songs like this. But this artist is really cute and tries to give her best throughout the whole performance.

Stano Simor: Atmosphere of the song reminds me of a winner from Germany LENA. This song uniquely lifts all up of the chairs. Gimmick uhh uhh uhh remains in my ears and recalls the 70’s. Atmosphere of the song is full of energy. The authors found the right singer for this hit track.

Greig Watts: Nice and pretty introduction and she has a modern delivery of the vocals (not unlike Lena from Germany), has a nice number of hooks and again has a good singalong feeling, which I personally think is a good thing for eurovision, it has to be memorable from the start. I like the double chorus idea, with the 2nd part Ooh Ooh Ooh, Boom Boom Boom, simple but sometimes simple is good!

At this years' edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, Gianluca was selected to represent Malta with the track Tomorrow co-written by Boris Cezek and Dean Muscat, finishing in eighth place. It will be quite an intriguing element to see who will follow the success achieved by the singing doctor, especially after also managing to succeed at this years' Junior Eurovision Song Contest where Gaia Cauchi was the victor. The 2014 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest will take place on the 7th and 8th February at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre. In recent days, the Public Broadcasting Services published the names of the entries competing in next years' edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, an effort which will see someone step into the shoes of Gianluca whose entry Tomorrow co-written by Boris Cezek and Dean Muscat finished in eighth place. The event, slated to take place on the 7th and 8th February at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre will see to the participation of twenty (20) acts, all vying for the unique prize of representing the country at the biggest musical event in Europe.

At first glance, two names stand out, and of course, those are of two former representatives of Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest; Miriam Christine and Fabrizio Faniello. On second look, I would have to note more artists who have returned to the competition, including the likes of Andreana, Romina Mamo, Wayne William, Sophie DeBattista; a former Junior Eurovision Song Contest representative and Pamela; backing vocalist for Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2010 and 2011 respectively. It's always positive to see artists who have been missing for a period of time, because it means that they rekindled their flame after a couple of years off.

The newcomers to the festival are also ones which are very much intriguing to denote with Christabelle Borg never declaring herself interested in representing Malta abroad. The four time Best Solo Artist Award winner at the BMAs has thrown her hat into the ring as she heads one of the twenty (20) available bids. Despite being a renowned figure, Daniel Testa's Junior Eurovision Song Contest days are well behind him and his days at a DJ at 89.7 Bay are helping define a personal genre, one which he will be taking to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest. Joining him there is Ryan Paul Abela, son of Maestro Paul Abela who has written some of Malta's most iconic entries for the international showcase.

Two final newcomers worth a mention are Debbie Stivala and Raquel Galdes, the latter having been a finalist in this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza and the former being a collaborator with notable band, Tribali. On the other hand, the other artists in the field were all present during this years' edition, including none other than; Amber, Davinia, Jessika, Franklin Calleja, Chris Grech, Corazon and Deborah C. It is worth noting that Richard Edwards has joined forces with sister Michelle Mifsud in a band known as Fire Light. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com as the latest news about the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2014 is unraveled.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaQ1od0LAiU

In 2010, the first runner-up at the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza was none other than Gloriana Arpa Belli, a relative minnow in the local music industry. Her song entitled Fil-Mużika composed by Renato Briffa to the lyrics of Doris Chetcuti almost upset the eventual winner Trid Tapprezza composed by Ray Agius to the lyrics of Alfred C Sant with vocals provided by Amber with just a handful of votes deciding the final result. escflashmalta.com is in a position to reveal that Gloriana intends to make her mark by entering the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2014 framework by contributing to the submissions.

Gloriana Arpa Belli might be a relative unknown but nevertheless, her experience within the music scene should be well respected having been a backing vocalist for several notable artists including the likes of Anna Azzopardi, a two time Malta Eurovision Song Contest participant. Her genealogical background is quite intriguing as well, noting that her mother is none other than Helen Micallef, Malta's 1972 representative with her uncle being Renato, Malta's 1975 representative. This means that one day, Gloriana might continue keeping participation at the Eurovision Song Contest within the family.

Gloriana is the first artist to confirm submission into the Malta Eurovision Song Contest without having previously been a part of the showcase. At this point in time, escflashmalta.com has exclusively revealed that former runners-up; Janvil, Eleanor Cassar, Richard Edwards, Tiziana Calleja and Kaya will all be trying their luck whilst veterans Nadine Axisa and Klinsmann will be opting out of the selection process. Davinia, last years' second runner-up confirmed submission on the programme; TVPM hosted by Corazon. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for more EXCLUSIVE news about the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2014.
