Portugal: RTP Confirms Presence in Denmark

RTP, the national broadcaster in Portugal, responsible for the participation of the country at the Eurovision Song Contest has decided to return to the competition as expected noting that funds have been put away to ensure that the nation is culturally represented on an international stage. At this point in time, it is unknown whether the television broadcaster will organise a national final or whether it will select the artist and the entry in an internal manner as several countries have decided to do in recent years.

Rui Andrade, a male vocalist who has twice finished third in the Festival da Cancao is one of the artists who is very much being persuaded to put his name forward either for a possible national final or internal selection with former Eurovision Song Contest winner, Ruslana giving him her open support. The last time that Portugal went to the Eurovision Song Contest was back in 2012 when their representative; Filipa Sousa and her entry Vida Minha co-written by Andrej Babic and Carlos Coelho did not manage to get through to the final finishing in thirteenth (13th) place with just thirty-nine (39) points. Portugal is the first country to confirm it's return to the competition. It is expected that Bosnia & Herzegovina might also be returning. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for the latest news.

Filipa Sousa and her entry Vida Minha finished in thirteeth place with just thirty-nine points meaning that Portugal failed to get through to the final of the Eurovision Song Contest for the second consecutive year back in 2012 when the event took place in Baku, Azerbaijan. RTP, the broadcaster responsible for the participation of Portugal had to withdraw due to the severe budget cuts made but nevertheless, had always spoken extremely highly of the event, one which used to pull in the rating despite a series of disappointing results.

According to preliminary reports, it seems that Portugal is looking to return to the Eurovision Song Contest which is set to take place in Denmark next year. The general feeling is the country is still going through a recession and should therefore stay out of the glitzy event but the team responsible for the Festival da Cancao would love to see Portugal represented on the world stage once more especially with the international singing competition increasing in prestige in the past couple of years seeing winners such as Loreen, Lena Meyer-Landrut, Alexander Rybak and Emmelie de Forest succeed across the board. Should Portugal confirm their participation, it will be made by the end of August, early September at the latest. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news as soon as it becomes available.

RTP, the broadcaster responsible for the participation of Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest was set to be privatised earlier this year but it seems that the decision was overturned by the Government at the last minute. This was seemingly the reason behind the non-participation in the event noting that the Western nation is the one of the countries with the most nods in the competition without having yet won. Vida Minha, performed by Filipa Sousa was the entry to be performed under the Portuguese flag last year but could only muster up thirteenth place despite an impeccable performance in the second semi-final.

In 2008, following four years of disappointment, the country made it through to the final for the very first time since the system was implemented with Senhora do Mar (negras Aguas) receiving the first runner-up position before achieving a mid-table position in the final. This was the case in the next two years with their last successfully qualified entry coming in 2010 in the form of Ha Dias Assim performed by Filipa Azevedo. Portugal is seemingly set to show the final of this years' edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, which is a requirement for all of the participating countries. This shows that their great respect towards the competition continues and with insiders saying that they will be returning in 2014, one will be hoping that this is the case. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news.

Tomorrow, co-written by Boris Cezek and Dean Muscat with vocals provided by Gianluca will be performing in sixth position within the second semi-final of this years' edition of the Eurovision Song Contest taking place in Malmö, Sweden. This was decided by the producers of the international spectacle who are working in accordance with the European Broadcasting Union in order to ensure a stunning evening filled with original music representative of each country. We would like to invite you to the weekly Ultimate Eurovision Experience. Apart from the means of FM Radio in the Netherlands on FM 106.8 and the audio stream from the studio via www.radiointernational.tv and on Digital Cable 781 & Cable 8.1Mhz in the Netherlands, the show will also be web-televised via the Radio International TV Channel from the studio and linking up the many international Eurovision fans and friends and play your requests and read your messages out on air. The simulcast will be from 2000 – 2300 hours CET when fans can join in and chat amongst each other via the Chat Room and request their favourite Eurovision entry.

Malta are yet to win the Eurovision Song Contest managing to finish in second place on two occasions, the first time in 2002 with Ira Losco and her entry 7th Wonder composed by Philip Vella and penned by Gerard James Borg as well as in 2005 with Chiara and her self-penned song Angel. Nevertheless, that does not mean that they are not putting their best efforts to work noting that this time round, they are seemingly giving the opportunity to Gianluca and his song Tomorrow as mentioned above. During the selection process, we had the opportunity to interview most of the finalists along with some of those who failed to make it through to the final. One of the former acts though were surely the group Scar who are well known in the country with a string of radio successes especially off their latest album, Breaking Radio Silence which included their award nominated track, White Lie. The interview with singer/songwriter Konrad Pule encompasses the past, present and the future. They competed with a track entitled Superstar.

Portugal will not be taking part in this years' edition of the Eurovision Song Contest with the broadcaster responsible for the participation, RTP caught in financial struggles and issues of privatisation but nevertheless, we expect them to return in due course. The country has never managed to finish on top of the leaderboard of the international spectacle and their last two participations were non-qualification attempts unfortunately. Filipa Sousa and her entry Vida Minha did not have the appropriate draw to carry her through to the final because the song was truly magical. We had the opportunity to speak to the former representative about her participation as well as her respective career at the moment. Nevertheless, this will not be the only interview from Portugal and this is due to the fact that we also had the chance to speak to one of the contenders in the 2012 national selection, Gerson Santos with his track Redescrobrir Portugal. Unfortunately the track was not well received and did not do well in the final, only managing one (1) point but nevertheless, that does not take away from the talents of any individual.

There will also be an interview with Rene Romkes, organiser of the Eurovision In Concert. Radio International is always keen to present songs during the show apart from the weekly features and therefore, collaborating the two ideas together will see the emergence of Eurovision UnverCover whereas tracks performed at the Eurovision Song Contest will be covered by other singers. The actual tracks will be played first followed by the cover and this will make things interesting. Apart from this feature, there will be new material played on the show by a number of former representatives including Lara Fabian. All of the latest news is also covered during the weekly broadcast noting resources from escflashmalta.com and escXtra where Luke Fisher, the Editor makes a weekly round-up. A round up of the current betting odds of this years' Eurovision Song Contest will be conducted by Alasdair Rendall. Follow the show through the official website and also send your requests through the contact link which is found on the aforementioned website.

Music is always on the frontfront of the minds of everyone and when the analysis of the second semi-final is put forward, it seems that one track seems to stick to mind with all of the others fighting it out for the remaining qualification spots. The amount of quality in this years' competition of the Eurovision Song Contest is quite high, so much so that it has been noted to be an open field at least until a couple of weeks ago when a number of tracks had been touted as potential winners. Nevertheless, the sixth song to be heard on the night of Thursday, will be none other than Vida Minha composed by Andrej Babic and penned by Carlos Coelho and ultimately performed by Filipa Sousa. The entry will be representing Portugal, the longest competing country yet to score a victory.

Filipa Sousa was born on March 2, 1985, in Albufeira. Her musical dreams started early: at the age of 6, she started learning music, and later entered the Conservatory. From the age of 12, she started participating in festivals and karaoke contests, in which she won a few prizes and several amateur Fado competitions in the Algarve.

After Filipa participated in workshops and theatre plays, she became part of the Fado group Al-Mouraria in 2003, and performed in various parts of the country, Spain and Morocco, and in TV shows. In 2007 she managed to get into the casting show Operação Triunfo, in which she remained for seven weeks, getting a very positive reaction.

In April 2008, she won the 1st Big Fado Soirée of the Algarve, in Loulé. In May 2010, she participated in the gala nights Nasci para o Fado (I Was Born For Fado), broadcast by the RTP, and whose goal was to select artists for the musical Fado: História de um Povo (Fado: The History of a People), by Filipe La Féria. She was selected for the final gala. She did various shows in different styles, from Fado to rock, accompanied by musicians on stage or by instrumental playback.

The Critics Voice Their Opinion

Magnus Kaxe

  • Another ballad. The melody has too many notes and a complicated structure. Boring performance, only thing that interests me are the dancers due to their outstanding choreography. Too bad it’s not a dance contest though, I would like to give them two (2) points.

Marion Welter

  • Portugal remains musically always loyal to itself, I like this influence of Fado Harmonies! Nevertheless, I just cannot see this standing out amongst the other songs and I believe that it will not make it to the finals hence giving it a total of four (4) points.

Tobias Larsson

  • A ballad that really wants to be emotional, dramatic and bombastic but that never really goes anywhere. The singer is good and nails the camera with her eyes, but it doesn't help much when your song is as static as this one. Agreeing with my colleagues above, I would like to give this song a total of four (4) points.

History of the Nation

This will be the nations' forty-sixth attempt for Portugal who remain the longest participating country not to win or at least finish in the top five at the Eurovision Song Contest. The fact of the matter remains that they have only reached the elite top ten on nine occasions, which means a handful unfortunately but their music has always shined through and in recent years have somewhat seen a bit of a resurgence making the final for three of the past four years with their best song in years sent back in 2008 entitled Senhora Do Mar performed by Vania Fernandes finishing in thirteenth position following a runner-up finish in the semi-final. Their best result was back in 1996 when the singer Lúcia Moniz performed the song O Meu Coração Não Tem Cor finishing in sixth place. It will be interesting to see what result Filipa will ultimately achieve.

We have just received word that another country has joined in the ‘Eurovision in Concert’ which will be held on April 21st in Amsterdam. And this is none other than Portugal who will be represented by Filipa Sousa at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Her song is titled ‘Vida Minha’ and is a typical traditional entry which one could expect from the nation. It is written by Andrej Babic and Carlos Coelho who are known for writin the song Senhora Do Mar, a song which changed the perspective of many people about the countries' music tastes.

There are more than 25 countries who will be performing in this event which would surely hype those Eurovision fans coming from all over the globe. The event is to be based on 2 parts just like the 3 previous years; the day program which is open for the press and then the much awaited concert. The show will be hosted by Cornald Maas and Ruth Jacott (ESC ’93). It is to be noted that Filipa will also be flying to London for The London Eurovision Party" event. Portugal is competing in the second semi-final with Malta. We would like to wish Filipa the best of luck.
