Making a surprise return for 2018, Malta’s national selection this year’s Junior Eurovision Song Contest also includes the addition of original songs - for the first time in eight years. Budding artists aged between 8 and 14 from the island were invited to submit their original compositions earlier in the summer, whilst PBS enlisted the help of an expert jury to shortlist sixteen of them for a live show.

The national selection will take to our screens this Saturday (8th September) at 16:30 on TVM and TVM HD, live from the Where’s Everybody’s studios in Qormi. The host will be local TV presenter and actress, Taryn Mamo Cefai. PBS has released all of the finalists’ songs on their website, for listening before the show. The outcome of the Malta Junior Eurovision Song Contest will be decided by a public televote and an expert jury, each having an equal say in the result. The public can vote once all of the songs have been performed, by calling the number 523021XX (the last two numbers being the songs’ number in the running order). Only one vote from each line will be registered. The winner will fly to the capital of Minsk, Belarus, to represent the country in the international final of the competition on November 25th - competing against 19 other countries in the biggest edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest yet.

In last year’s event, Malta was represented by Gianluca Cilia with the song “Dawra Tond” - composed by Dominic Cini and penned by Emil Calleja Bayliss. The 10 year old placed in 9th position overall, whilst obtaining 2nd place in the public vote. 30 semi-finalist participants, shortlisted by a panel of ‘expert judges’ on CD, were put under a #live test in front of a second panel of professional ‘expert judges’, and the final verdict was released earlier on Tuesday 5th December with a total of 17 songs put forward to the festival, L-Għanja tal-Poplu Żgħażagħ 2018. Back after a decade long hiatus, the competition drew a lot of support when first announced and it seems that the demand and interest is rather high.

Organised by the L-Għanja tal-Poplu Committee in collaboration with St Benedict College in Kirkop, the Ministry of Education, L-Akkademja tal-Malti as well as the Malta Concert Orchestra, L-Għanja tal-Poplu Żgħażagħ saw Brooke, Marilena and Christabelle make a name for themselves by virtue of finding the right message to share back in 2005, 2006, and 2007 respectively. The next winner will come from the following list of 17 participating entries.

L-Għanja tal-Poplu Żgħażagħ, is making a comeback in 2018 after a 10 year hiatus, having run for a successful three year period between 2005 and 2007 welcoming Brooke, Marilena and Christabelle as winners. It is being organised by the L-Għanja tal-Poplu Committee in collaboration with St Benedict College in Kirkop, the Ministry of Education, L-Akkademja tal-Malti as well as the Malta Concert Orchestra.

Following the initial submission process, a professional panel of ‘expert judges’ heard the songs on CD before shortlisting on a total of 30 songs, all of which will have the chance to perform their original songs #live in front of another panel of ‘expert judges’. Please note that this next phase will be taking place on Saturday 2nd December.

Malta: Young Starlets Set on Conquering Europe

Erseb Productions, a renowned company in the local festival circuit with well over thirty years of experience, has given rise to several talents along the years, including artists such as former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Fabrizio Faniello (2001, 2006) and Miriam Christine (1996). With a spectacular range of promising talent, the local music scene in Malta continues to evolve, and there is a general feeling that talent is to be promoted on the international circuit.

During the end-of-year competition, aptly titled "Erseb Goes Christmas", the organisers revealed that a number of all-rounders would be given the opportunity to represent Malta in various international competitions. La Voix Academy under the tutelage of  vocal director, Gillian Attard was the most successful in terms of students who acquired these tickets, managing 16 out of the 18 possible slots. The other 2 students are successfully taught by Glen Vella, a former Eurovision Song Contest representative, and Audrey Marie Bartolo, a finalist in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2010.

During the course of the year, Erseb Productions will be visiting a total of 3 international competitions. Kicking off the proceedings is the "Voci dal Sud" festival in Italy between the 26th and the 28th July with 12 participants; Giulia Cilia, Jahel Cardona, Kelsey Bellante, Raisa Marie Micallef, Michela Pace, Althea Mifsud, Michela Dalli and Lindsay Mallia who have directly qualified to the final as well as Kayley Cuschieri, Mariah Nicola Vella, Emma Muscat and Danika Cutajar who have to pass the semi-final stage of the competition.

In August, Erseb Productions will be heading to the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia with Jean-Claude Azzopardi, Veronica Rotin, Rachel Lowell and Clarissa Cauchi as part of the line-up in the 'Lake Pearls', a competition taking place between the 14th and 15th. Then between the 8th and 9th August, it will be time for Martina Cutajar, Riona DeGeorgio and Aidan Abela to do the honours for Malta as they partake in the "Oltreoceano" showcase in Italy. Gillian Attard, of La Voix Academy as well as Ironic PR and Management, has recently been in contact with escflashmalta.com in order to announce that all of the participants on the programme Una Stella Sta Nascendo, a vocal talent show which airs on Sky Italia, have made it through to the final phase of the competition. This is another successful story for the elite academy, having seen artists succeed on Io Canto, Ti Lascio Una Canzone and the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.
