KKI 2013: Rules and Regulations Published

Miriam Christine and Claudia Faniello are two of the most notable names in the local music industry and they owe part of their success to the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza organised by Media.Link Communications. The competition has a lot of significance for the simple reason that all of the submitted entries have to be original and in Maltese, the national language of the country. In last years' edition organised under the hospice of Mark Azzopardi as Chairman, it was Deborah C and her entry Jekk Nużaw Moħħna composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas and penned by Joe Chircop which finished in the top spot. Rules and Regulations for the twenty-second edition were officially published yesterday.

During the course of the weekend, Karen DeBattista was announced by Spiteri Lucas Entertainment as the first finalist of this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza having triumphed in the Passport 2 Indifest competition. Submissions at a fee of €50 will be received at Media.Link Communications on Friday, 17th May with the first phase of the competition behind closed doors taking place on Saturday, 18th May prior to the live phase scheduled for a week later on the 25th May. No acceptions regarding the dates will be made so the committee is being stern about the fact that those who submit need to make sure they are free on the available dates.

The committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is also retaining the right of the tracks which qualify to the final of this years' competition. This is not usual practice noting that the rights are normally attributed to the songwriters who would have spent the money to record the track. In the past this was an issue in other local competitions and as a matter of fact had to be dropped from the clauses. For the second year running, we applaud Media.Link Communications for allowing live backing vocalists for whoever wishes to make use of them. Stay tuned to for all of the latest news with regards to this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

Jekk Nużaw Moħħna, composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas to the lyrics of Joe Chircop with vocals provided by Deborah C was the winner of last years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. Marilena Gauci was the first runner up with the song Bl-Ikbar Serjetà composed by Philip Vella with lyrics by Joe Chircop with the second runner-up being none other than the song Tama u Kuraġġ performed by Domenique to the tune of Philip Vella and the lyrics of Cher Vella. Preparations for this years' edition has commenced, albeit late and it is expected that the rules and regulations will be released throughout the course of the week.

In 2010, Media.Link Communications announced that Mark Azzopardi would become chairman of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza replacing Frederick Zammit who had done an astonishing job in the previous years. The brand new logo of the competition has just been published on the official facebook page and seems to lack inspiration really, somewhat looking very much like something out of the nineties. Nevertheless, the quality of the songs will surely be important and it will be intriguing to see who is touted to return to the competition apart from which newcomers will sound their voice. The first finalist decided over the course of the weekend was Karen DeBattista who has already appeared on the Malta Hit Song Contest on ONE Television a couple of years ago whilst also made it through to the second phase of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the track Cold Whispers composed by Mark Scicluna to the lyrics of Emil Calleja Bayliss. Stay tuned to as more news about the local music scene is unveiled.

Media.Link Communications takes pride in promoting the local music scene henceforth why they organise the annual Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, a competition in which vocalists have to perform original songs in their respective mother tongue. Ira Losco and Claudia Faniello, two of the most notable stars at the moment both started from this competition before going onto release more material and many will hope to follow in their footsteps. Media.Link Communications in accordance with the committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza worked to include a wildcard into the competition, one which would be granted through a singing competition entitled Passport 2 Indifest held on Sas-Sitta produced by Spiteri Lucas Entertainment.

The recipient of the wildcard last year was Simone Gauci with the track Id F'Id composed by Renato Briffa and penned by Keith Zammit, finishing in a respectable mid-table position. It is worth pointing out that the first finalist selected last week was none other than Karen DeBattista, a former finalist in the Malta Summer Hit Song Contest as well as a second round qualifier in this years' Malta Eurovision Song Contest. Today the semi-final featured Marie Claire Attard Bason, a Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza finalist in 2009 with Ma Rridx Ninbidel and Letizia Seychell who was a contestant in the show Don't Stop Me Now hosted by Eileen Montestin.

The first performance of the duel was done by Letizia Seychell who gave her very own rendition of Kieku Taf? originally sung by Corazon during L-Għanja tal-Poplu competition in 2006. Marie Claire Attard Bason followed with her rendition of the song Ħallini Inħobbok originally performed by Georgina during the Festival Kanzunetta Maltija 1999. The jury as last week was composed of Annabelle Debono, former winner of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza as well as Janvil, runner-up of the 2005 Malta Eurovision Song Contest and Neville Refalo, multiple finalist in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. In the end, it was Marie Claire Attard Bason who won the hearts of the judges and will thus face Karen DeBattista. Stay tuned to as the result is unveiled next week.

Maltese as a language has been described as one of the most notorious identifiable elements and therefore, it does go to show that the music industry takes a liking to the use of the aforementioned method of speech in a number of competitions including L-Għanja tal-Poplu and the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. The focus is on the latter due to the large amount of submitted entries every year although it has to be noted that quantity does not really mean quality. Nevertheless, most of the winners have been merited their top ranking position especially when noting that the most notable performers to come out were none other than; Eleanor Cassar, Ira Losco, Claudia Faniello, Nadine Axisa, Roger Tirazona, Miriam Christine, Lawrence Gray, Amber, Mike Spiteri and Claudette Pace amongst others. Garnering entry into the competition is not easy and therefore, Spiteri Lucas Entertainment and the Committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza thought up the idea to promote a wildcard entry which would be granted through a performance competition on television show; Sas-Sitta which airs every Saturday afternoon on NET Television with Ray Attard and former Eurovision Song Contest representative; Debbie Scerri as hosts.

As a matter of fact, there was renewed interest in the competition following the fact that last years' winner; Simone Gauci spoke positive of the experience and the opportunity to perform on the stage of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. It would definitely be a coup to have a complete newcomer perform during the evening but nevertheless, the shortlist of semi-finalists in this years' Passport 2 Indifest includes two former finalists in the form of Marie Claire Attard Bason and Ana-Maria Grima whilst some others have also competed in the teenage portion of the competition including Cherise Attard, Mikaela Bajada and Dorcas Debono. Other artists who have made it through this time round have experienced performances in front of an audience with Karen DeBattista having been in the Malta Summer Hit Song Contest, Cynthia Attard performing in the pre-selection stage of the 2010 Malta Eurosong, Letizia Seychell and Nicola Marie Cutajar taking part in Don't Stop Me Now. The final act to make it through was Claudio Castelletti who most recently was a backing the Spiteri Lucas Entertainment show having been scouted last year during the same competition. Passport 2 Indifest continues to unravel as the jury hear the ten semi-finalists once more and decide, who the final four should comprise of. Stay tuned to for all of the latest news as soon as it takes place.

One of the most prestigious competitions in the local music industry is surely the annual Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza which does not only help promote upcoming talent but also does so within the Maltese language which is recognized as the national method of conversation in the country respectively. Throughout the years, winners of the competition have included the likes of Mike Spiteri, Miriam Christine, Claudette Pace, Claudia Faniello, Amber, Annabelle Debono and Eleanor Cassar, all of which have gone onto achieve various forms of success in other local and international competitions. In the meantime, as from this years' edition, one of the places in the Established Category was given to the winner of the Passport 2 Indifest competition organized by Spiteri Lucas Entertainment.

The initial winner was the upcoming performer; Simone Gauci who ended up performing the track Id F'Id composed by Renato Briffa and penned by Keith Zammit. The song was written especially with a female performer in mind and ultimately, it was performed exceptionally well on the stage of The Granaries in Floriana during the competition hosted by Ronald Briffa and Christine Haber. The result might not have been too positive but then again, the performer enjoyed the experience thoroughly. Following the success of the first edition, the committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza decided to work with Spiteri Lucas Entertainment for a second edition and in fact, there are seventeen (17) finalists, all of which are competing for that elite spot and hoping to ultimately become the winner of the 2013 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

Programme 1: Letizia Seychell & Marie Claire Attard Bason

Programme 2: Cynthia Attard & Mikaela Bajada

Programme 3: Ann Marie Ellul & Diandra Mifsud

Programme 6: Kurt Galea & Cherise Attard

Most of the finalists have credentials to show for their respective appearances in this programme with some of the people above having been in some of the most prestigious competitions in the country including the same aforementioned Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza as well as the Malta Eurosong competition in a particular case therefore, it also goes to show that talent is finding it somewhat difficult. This time round, Passport 2 Indifest has eliminated tele-voting completely and therefore will be resorting to a panel of judges which will most likely include a head judge as well as special weekly guest judges throughout. Media.Link Communications are currently extremely busy getting things done for the 2012 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza noting their weekly promotion through the programme Indifest which is hosted by Ronald Briffa and Christine Haber, two names which are very much synonymous to the showcase in recent years. It comes to no surprise though that preparations for the 2013 edition have also been thought of in order to improve on what has been accomplished thus far this year noting the strong competition of twenty artists in the Established Category as well as those ten acts competing within the Teenage Category. For the very first time, in the latter, the jury will have the most pivotal say with the result of this phase and also the final being decided by 60% Jury and 40% tele-voting noting that the best package should finish out on top. Another innovation was the wildcard into the former category which was won by none other than Simone Gauci who was then given the song Id F'Id composed by Renato Briffa and penned by Keith Zammit.

In the final of the Passport 2 Indifest competition, Simone managed to beat none other than Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2009 finalist, Marie Claire Attard Bason who has been itching to make it through to the competition but is yet to manage that feat once more. Spiteri Lucas Entertainment alongside the committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza have decided that this years' wildcard spot somewhat worked in terms of system and therefore it will only grow in the years to come and hence it has been decided that it will continue in 2013 when the competition will be moving into it's twenty second edition. is always a proud supporter of the arts especially music and is represented by two members of the Editorial Board when it comes to the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. The rules clearly state that submissions have to be sent in by the 12th September 2012 so that the elimination process can begin. For the very first time, there will be no tele-voting either meaning that a 100% Professional Jury as decided by the Committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza and Spiteri Lucas Entertainment will be put forward to make the respective selections. All of the rules and regulations can be obtained by sending an email to This email address is being protected from spambots.
