Malta: New Music Video Release by Kurt Calleja

Kurt Calleja, Malta's representative at the 2012 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest with the song This Is The Night co-written with Johan Jämtberg and Mikael Gunnerås has just unveiled the music video to his latest single Love On Mars, his sophomore single release off his debut album of the same name. Since returning from the Eurovision Song Contest, Kurt has been kept extremely busy putting the final touches on his debut studio album and eventually, garnering traction on radio, something which he eventually managed to do with the track Boomerang which earned him a Best Solo Artist nomination at last years' Bay Music Awards.

Love on Mars, written by Chris Denaro was recorded at Railway Studios MT and Treble Studios with production taken care of by Mikael Gunnerås, co-writer of This Is The Night and guitars conducted by Peter Borg of Red Electrick fame. The music video features an extremely heartwarming set of stories, all built around the lyrics of the track. Kurt Calleja along the rest of his band are seen performing in the new open air theatre. Whilst Kurt Calleja has not ruled out returning to the Eurovision Song Contest in the future, we have it on good account that he did not submit any entries. The same cannot be said for his younger brother Kevin Paul. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news.

Valletta, Malta's capital city has played host to several cultural events along the years, the most recent being the International Festival of Maltese Song, seeing to the victory of Olivia Lewis. Nevertheless, the streets of the famous capital city of culture in 2018 were used to display a flashmob in promotion of NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto under the slogan Feels Good, Looks Good, Tastes Good! The music used for the flashmob was one which the public could relate to having been entries that have successful represented the country on an international level.

As the first notes of Desire (2000) by Claudette Pace were played, the public stopped to notice the growing crowd of dancers close to the open theatre. The music changed and as L-Imħabba (1972) by Joe and Helen played, the public went crazy and started to involve themselves.  Other tracks which featured were On Again .. Off Again (2004) by Julie & Ludwig, Tomorrow (2013) by Gianluca, One Life (2011) by Glen Vella and This Is The Night (2012) by Kurt Calleja. This was a stunning initiative which was appreciated by both the locals and the foreigners and apart from promoting a specific brand, ended up also showcasing the beauty of the streets of Valletta. In 2011, the Public Broadcasting Services issues a rule which stated that no representative from the past three years could enter the Malta Eurovision Song Contest. Nevertheless, it was extended to the artists who had honoured the country in the previous five years in both 2012 and 2013, with one vocalist always granted permission to return as every year wore down. During the evening news bulletin, last night, Keith Demicoli revealed that this is one of the rules which have been completely dismissed by the host broadcaster with only Gianluca not permitted to submit an entry.

The four vocalists who will benefit from this change in particular are; Chiara, Thea Garrett, Glen Vella and Kurt Calleja who all represented Malta in the past five years with varying degrees of success. It is important to denote that three have also submitted their willingness to return to the competition should they be offered the right song with only one opting to remain out of the fray. Thea Garrett who flew to Oslo, Norway with the song My Dream composed by Jason Paul Cassar to the lyrics of Sunny Aquilina failed to get through to the final, finishing in twelfth place but made a number of contacts which have also led to the release of a couple of songs. She has subsequently moved to London where she is perfecting her vocal technique at a renowned music academy.

Chiara, the female vocalist who represented Malta on three occasions, the last of which being with the track What If We composed by Marc Paelinck to the lyrics of Gregory Bilsen is currently signed to an Icelandic Record Label whose interests in the Eurovision Song Contest go deep considering that each artist that represents the Scandinavian country is represented by them. At the moment, Chiara has just unveiled her latest single, a cover of the hit song 9 to 5 in a duet with Hera Bjork who also went to the international competition. Chiara would jump at the chance to do it again should she have the absolutely perfect song. This is something that she stated on Euromix, hosted by Frederick Zammit on Radju Malta earlier this month.

Glen Vella is a true fan of the Eurovision Song Contest and one has to denote that he won the national selection relatively quickly, having participated as a soloist on only three occasions in total. His winning entry, One Life composed by Paul Giordimaina to the lyrics of Fleur Balzan was a decent effort but nevertheless, lacked that special quality which would have taken it into the final at the international event. It is true that he missed out only by one (1) point but nevertheless, I was never too keen on the actual song itself. He has spoken about returning time and time again and was also present in Sweden earlier this year where he was invited to perform by fans of the event.

Kurt Calleja was the surprise package of the year 2012 despite having managed to earn a reputable fan base following his second runner-up finish at the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in 2011. Following his participation within the international competition with the song This Is The Night which he co-wrote alongside Johan Jämtberg and Mikael Gunnerås, which saw him reach the final and finish in twenty-first place, Kurt returned to Malta and tried to launch a proper music career. His follow-up single, that entitled Boomerang was a massive success, picked up on 89.7 Bay and earning him a double nomination as Best Solo Artist at the Bay Music Awards and Best Male Artist at the Malta Music Awards. Nevertheless, launching his album Love On Mars has proven difficult despite a successful launch concert.

Whilst Chiara, Glen Vella and Kurt Calleja could possibly throw their hat into the ring, there might be some unfinished business with former representatives; Fabrizio Faniello and Olivia Lewis. The male vocalist who represented Malta on two occasions in 2001 and 2006 respectively has just won the third biggest music competition by virtue of winning the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza with the song Aħfirli Jekk Trid composed by Minik to the lyrics of Rita Pace. On the other hand, Olivia, representative of 2007 signalled her return by making it through to the final of the International Festival of Maltese Song, the second biggest music competition in Malta. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news about the upcoming edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, organised by the Public Broadcasting Services.

Their support to the initiative is vital because they are individuals in the public eye and thus have a certain following.

Kurt Calleja, who represented Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012 with the track This Is The Night which he co-wrote with Johan Jämtberg and Mikael Gunnerås has just unveiled his debut album, Love on Mars, Gianluca just released his debut album Waiting for Tomorrow following his eighth place finish at the prestigious international competition with the track Tomorrow co-written by Boris Cezek and Dean Muscat whilst Ira Losco who honoured her nation at the 2002 international spectacle with 7th Wonder composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Gerard James Borg is currently promoting the track Me Luv u Long Time, the third single off her sixth studio album, The Fire.

Both the male and the female vocalist took to the stage to share their love of reading, conveying a message of how one could enter a different world whilst educating oneself with what is being published. It is also important to denote that whilst Ira Losco suggested the book 'Goggle Eyes' written by Anne Fine, Kurt Calleja suggest the series 'Harry Potter' written by celebrated author JK Rowling. It has also been acknowledged that more reading ambassadors will be revealed in due course, including ones from the entertainment industry. Following his victory at the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the track This Is The Night co-written with Johan Jämtberg and Mikael Gunnerås, he represented the nation in Baku, Azerbaijan where he obtained forty-one points in a twenty-first placed finish.

Upon his return from the Eurovision Song Contest, Kurt Calleja found solace on 89.7 Bay, Malta's leading radio station with the release of the single Boomerang which saw him nominated as best soloist at the Bay Music Awards whilst also giving him maximum airplay. The first single off the debut album, Love On Mars proved to be the beginning of something special or so one thought noting that his follow-up tracks have not managed to garner as much attention. On a positive note though, the album was launched with a major concert in aid of the Inspire Foundation with special guest acts including former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Chiara and Gianluca as well as multiple national final participant, Amber, Malta Music Awards Best Solo Artist winner, Brooke and current charting sensation, Maxine Pace. Kevin Paul Calleja, brother of Kurt Calleja, representative on behalf of Malta at the 2012 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest with the track This Is The Night co-written alongside Johan Jämtberg and Mikael Gunnerås. Living in the shadow of a brother is not particularly easy, something seen with Claudia Faniello who many had thought might not be able to shy away from Fabrizio Faniello, a two time representative of the nation at the international spectacle. Kevin is already aiming big though, taking his musical skills into recording a cover of the song Don't You Worry Child by Swedish House Mafia.

During the 2012 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, Kevin Paul Calleja was the only family member to accompany Kurt on stage and this was seen as a positive move due to the fact that the two gelled extremely well together. Both artists had been on stage also at the 2011 Malta Eurovision Song Contest when Kurt had submitted the entry Over and Over which finished in third place. An official music video accompanying the cover directed by Daniel Abdilla was shot within a garage and the dark colours used seem to show a dark side to the song noting that the arrangement is stripped down to extreme basics.
