Mużika Mod Ieħor, a blog with a critical eye on the several releases in the local music scene was founded several years ago by Dr Toni Sant, an individual who has managed to slide in and out of the scene through various methods, having been part of the board that used to organise the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in the past as well as a disc jockey on multiple radio stations. At the end of the year, an awards system is put in motion in order to bestow a couple of honours upon some artists who might have either been overlooked or who had still garnered popularity throughout the year.

The project is divided into five categories; TOP ALBUM, TOP SINGLE/EP, TOP VIDEO, TOP ONLINE RELEASE and TOP OVERSEAS RELEASE, in a clear bid to make sure that no one is left out of the running in the several awards. Voting could take place through one’s personal account through Facebook on the official website, and then also follow the standings which are updated on an hourly basis. Artists from the Eurovision Song Contest, including none other than; Chris & Moira (1994), Ira Losco (2002) and Gianluca Bezzina (2013) are all nominated.

Sinners, an extended play released by Lauren Aquilina managed to peak at number #66 in the United Kingdom with fan support through social media including Facebook and Twitter. It wasn't the first success though noting that her debut release, that entitled Fools also peaked at number #72 suggesting that her fan-base is on the increase. As the rules of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2014 were published by the Public Broadcasting Services in the past forty-eight (48) hours, it comes as no surprise that local fans would like her to put her name forward. Those who think it's not possible are wrong especially due to the fact that Lauren could very much apply for a dual citizenship and thus making her eligible. Nevertheless, this will not be the case at least for next year according to a post on social networking website, Facebook.

Darren Cassar posted the escflashmalta.com article about the release of the regulations on her wall asking her to possibly consider a role within the selection process but his efforts proved futile with her reply being a categorical 'hahahaha noooooo I can't! xx' and in technical terms she might be right considering that she has a tour planned in February, one which might not allow her to take up any more commitments for the time being. One artist who has already stated her intentions in favour of a second participation within the Malta Eurovision Song Contest is none other than Davinia, the second runner-up at this years' edition of the competition. A photo with the tag #eurovision was posted whilst in the studio with Matt Mercieca signalling that she is working with the same individuals behind Betrayed. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all the latest news.

On the 15th August 2014, the voting officially commences with the public having the opportunity to select their favourite music video from a selection of ten (10) songs which OGAE Malta have internally selected amongst their members. As has already been noted in a previous article, it was impossible to shortlist the music video for the track Tomorrow co-written by Boris Cezek and Dean Muscat with vocals provided by Gianluca because entries from the Eurovision Song Contest are prohibited for taking part. Despite this particular inconvience, the list of music videos shortlisted feature artists from the whole spectrum of the local music scene including former Eurovision Song Contest representative; Ira Losco as well as national final participants; Kelly Schembri and Davinia Pace.

One of the most lucrative markets in the music industry is based in the United Kingdom for the simple reason that homegrown artists have successfully exported music abroad. It is not straightforward to achieve success but one vocalist whose extended play entitled Fools managed to crack the top hundred in the past couple of months was the British/Maltese, Lauren Aquilina. On the 23rd June, she will be turning eighteen and when one puts things into perspective, it is truly an honour to know how far a seventeen year old can get too with pure determination. She has been busy performing across the country recently but nevertheless, she is a proud supporter of charity and is currently doing her bit as well with the release of a special original track entitled Wanderlust.

Lauren Aquilina is a singer/songwriter who resides just outside of London in the United Kingdom but comes to Gozo, Malta's sister island every year to meet up with the rest of her family. As a matter of fact, in a recent diary page posted online she states that Malta 'is a small but beautiful island with lots of hidden caves'. Wanderlust, the brand new track has been specifically written for Comic Relief, a British charity founded in 1985 in response to the famine in Ethiopia. Several renowned personalities have been known to contribute during the day and it is very much the British version of what the Maltese know as L-Istrina. You can visit her official website, where you could listen and also get your free copy of Wanderlust but remember to donate to Comic Relief, a truly admirable cause.
