First rehearsals for this years' edition of the L-Għanja tal-Poplu competition took place within the Sir Temi Żammit Hall on Thursday evening amidst tension surroundings noting that the University of Malta campus was going through council elections but nevertheless, the stage is seemingly set for another stunning showcase tomorrow night. The themes for this years' competing songs are extremely varied but it has to be noted that there are a couple of similarities in themes such as marriage and corruption for example. We do not intend to release any details of the genres or the performances themselves because the show will eventually be shown on television at a later date but we can indeed promise you that there will surely be a couple to your liking.

During the past weekend, Sir Temi Żammit Hall was filled with laughter as the Student's Fest took place under the hospice of the University of Malta Council. This weekend, it will be quite different with live music and original songs in Maltese taking centre stage. It is important to note that this years' quality is very much in the range of the previous year and given the mixture between newcomers and established performers, one could say that the first phase jury did a splendid job in their respective selection. They also noted that it was difficult to let some of the songs go especially because they felt like they had a special something in either the lyrics, the music or the vocals of a particular individual.

There will be a number of multiple winners tomorrow night considering that apart from the top three placings which will see to performances abroad, there will also be special award given to the Best Social Theme. The opening act for the evening will be none other than last years' winning group, Kultural with the interval act set to be conducted by Alegria, a dancing troupe known for their flamenco genre. The hosting duties have been allocated to Frank O'Neill, a former participant and Valerie Vella, known for hosting the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on three occasions and you may all attend by purchasing your tickets here. We would like to wish all of the participants the very best of luck, especially to the escflashmalta.com Head of Digital Media and Head of Press, Emil Calleja Bayliss who is the lyricist behind two entries this year.

The 21st edition of the annual Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza will be taking place next week with preparations now in full swing with the organizing committee making the final arrangements as they prepare for the rehearsals which will be taking place in just seven days time noting that the final run through would be taking place on the morning of the competition itself. The venue as has been the case almost every year except when weather wasn't permitted have been the Granaries in Floriana which have now hosted some of the most amazing concerts in history including those of Joseph Calleja for the past three years. Nevertheless, one week before the festival does take place, Indifest will be hosted and it will be quite the show because apart from the weekly performances which people have come to expect from the acts taking part in the Established Category, there will also be the revelation of the finalists of the Teenage Category along with a performance by a special guest as has also come to be expected each week.

This year, the teenage category will be crowning the fifth winner having seen the likes of Gabrielle Massa, Dian Bland, Cherylis Camilleri and Angelica Portelli triumph in the past four years since the competition began back in 2008 to resounding success. The difference between the past and the present though is the way that the result has been worked out noting that the jury had a 60% say in the final proceedings this time round with the public still having a 40% weighing in the outcome. Ultimately this was the way forward with talent being given the most importance. This evening, the performers of the ten participating entries will be present in the studio awaiting the announcement of the finalists as made by Christine Haber, Ronald Briffa and the Chairman of the Committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza; Mark Azzopardi. Prior to the announcement this evening, we would like to remind you that you can still watch the videos of the songs below.

09. X'Qaltli L-Arzella - Antonella Rapa (Mark Spiteri Lucas / Joe Friggieri)

10. X'Sar Minnhom - Mikaela Bajada (Miriam Christine / Joe Chircop)

This evening, the performances will continue from the Established Category as well noting that taking to the stage this evening will be Kylie Coleiro with the track Ħalluni composed by PhiliP Vella and penned by Joe Chircop as well as Corinne Caruana who had to reschedule as she fell ill a couple of weeks ago and was unable to attend. She will be performing the track Dan Mhux Tmiem composed by Mark Scicluna and penned by Rita Pace. In the meantime, there will also be a special performance this evening given by none other than the reigning winner of the Teenage Category of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, that being the Gozitan Angelica Portelli who will be giving a performance of the track Ejjew Nieqfu composed by Miriam Christine and penned by Joe Chircop. This has to be the most filled programme of the series but nevertheless, headlined by Christine Haber and Ronald Briffa as hosts, it will be quite the showcase this evening. Make sure that you tune to NET Television for the final programme of Indifest before the actual Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza.

The very first programme of any season is always going to be somewhat an intriguing one and this is due to the fact that there would be expectations and for yet another year, Media.Link Communications have set up the perfect preparation for the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza which is heading into the twenty first year following last years' epic anniversary. There have been a number of changes which have been implemented this time round thanks for a host of ideas brought forward by the committee of the competition led by Chairman Mark Azzopardi. One of the most interesting is surely the promotion of the songs just before they are performed on the programme. The preview videos were recorded at NET Television by a professional crew and then uploaded through viral website, YouTube but nevertheless, we encourage you to get to know the people in the competition better through Indifest and escflashmalta.com so that one could associate a track to a particular performer before ultimately voting.

The 2012 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza features a host of talent noting that there are a number of newcomers as well as individuals who have been rightfully earning their place in the local music industry. Apart from meeting three (3) people each week, two (2) from the Established Category and one from the Teenage Category, there is also a weekly special guest, one who has somewhat become popular through a number of events but also brings about experience from this particular competition, one of the two that still promote the Maltese language through the medium of song. In fact, last week, the programme had the proud pleasure of presenting Mike Spiteri who was the winner of last years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza ewith the track B'Rieda tal-Azzar written by Ray Agius but then again, many people would remember a number of his contributions to the competition including ones such as Grazzi Mill-Qalb and Rebbiegħa Ġdida amongst others.

Once more, returning as a producer for this episode and for all of the series is none other than Mark Azzopardi who is also the chairman of the committee behind the competition. It is somewhat imperative to have such a distinctive persona behind both the programme and the competition so that there is a merge in terms of decisions. There has been a lot of work done behind the scenes to make sure that all of the finalists receive the same amount of promotion noting the videos, the photo shoot and also the appearances on the actual programme which is being hosted by Christine Haber and Ronald Briffa, two names who clearly need no introduction to the viewers of NET Television and also other broadcasters. In this weeks' episode, the main guests from the Established Category will be none other than Christian Azzopardi with the song Kburin Bik composed by Philip Vella and penned by Joe Chircop and also Francesca Scerri with the track Mill-Bidu Nett composed by Elton Zarb and penned by Rita Pace. The former did not actually make it through with the vocals of the man noting that finalist, Domenique Azzopardi decided to give him her song.

From the teenage Cateogry, there will also be a live performance by Maria Debono who will be performing the song Aħna ż-Żagħżagħ composed by Kaya and penned by Joe Chircop. The special guest for this weeks' edition of Indifest will be none other than former Eurovision Song Contest representative Glen Vella who had failed to qualify to the finals of the event by just one point having performed the track One Life to his best possible abroad. Nevertheless, he had been in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza on many occasions with his last performance coming back in 2009 with the track Kuntent composed by Sean Vella and penned by Philip Vella which finished in tenth place during the evening. Therefore, with such a jam packed programme this evening, we encourage you to turn on NET Television at 20:30 and watch yet another Indifest hosted by Ronald Briffa and Christine Haber with all of the exciting questions posed by James Cassar.

Over the years, there have been a number of competitions on behalf of the arts especially when it comes to promoting the national language of the country being Maltese. Unfortunately, lately there has been a drought in such events with only the Għanja tal-Poplu and the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza keeping to their name of promoting the language. The former was actually organized last Saturday at the Sir Temi Żammit Hall within the University of Malta. This was the thirty sixth edition of the esteemed competition and it was hosted by none other than multiple winner Corazon and veteran presenter Alfred Zammit. The event will be shown on ONE Television next Saturday but in the meantime, we can let you know the results of the evening nevertheless.

The evening was a whirlwind of excitement actually featuring some of the best singer/songwriters in the Maltese Islands. The festival went forward without any glitches from start to finish including the opening act featuring the last winner, Corazon with the song Mill-Għajnejn ta' Tifla and the intervals which included none other than British singer/songwriter Sarah Class who has worked with the likes of Soprano; Hayley Westenra, Eurovision Song Contest Winner; Eimear Quinn and also wrote tracks for the soundtrack of the Harry Potter movies.

The excitement during the guest performances was surely gearing up and the judges which included the likes of literary scholars such as Manwel & Immanuel Mifsud as well as musicians such as Paul Abela and Joe Tanti made some interesting decisions. One could easily note that the tracks were the best that have been presented in recent years as the awards were divided equally amongst a number of musicians.

Congratulations to all of the winners of the awards on Saturday evening but also to the other competitors. The Editorial team would like to send their special wishes to two of the acts during the evening, Clive Muscat who performed the song Umani written by Paul Attard and Anthony Camilleri as well as Grecia Bezzina whose song Tal-Komma Twila was written by Dario Bezzina and Emil Calleja Bayliss. Both have connections to escflashmalta.com and thus we are proud of their performances and slightly prouder of the latter for finishing in the first runner-up position. It is an achievement which will surely be highlighted by more in the years to come.
