MESC 2015: Shortlist of 48 Entries Made Public

On the 3rd October, Xarabank will kick-off for another season, and it will do so with a bang, as the revelation of the acts through to the semi-final of the 2015 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest will be made public. Following the initial submission process, where the Public Broadcasting Services received 134 entries, a shortlist of 48 entries has now been published through the official website.

A quick glance at the list of shortlisted entries, one would realise that the list features a relative amount of established artists including; Glen Vella (ESC 11), Miriam Christine (ESC 96), Olivia Lewis (ESC 07), Lawrence Gray (MESC 98-99, 01-04, 09, 11), Gianluca (ESC 13), Trilogy (MESC 05-07, 09), Daniel Testa (JESC 08), Chris Grech (MESC 13-14), Jessika (MESC 08, 11-14), Amber (MESC 11-14), Domenique (MESC 11, 13), Danica Muscat (MESC 12-13), Marilena Gauci (MESC 11, 13), Andreana (MESC 98, 02-06, 09-10, 14), Fiona Cauchi (MESC 98, 01, 02, 05, 09) & Franklin Calleja (MESC 13, 14).

Apart from the established names, it seems that the line-ups of established groups such as Trilogy and Monroe have both been altered for the upcoming edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with Ludwig Galea replacing Daniel Debono in the former, and Nadia Vella becoming a new member of the latter, joining former Malta Eurovision Song Contest finalist; Kelly Schembri.

Other names which have caught our eye in the list are surely those of; Karen DeBattista, winner of this year’s edition of L-Għanja tal-Poplu; Kurt Cassar, winner of the Best New Talent at this year’s edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza; Annabelle Vella, backing vocalist to Malta’s entry at the Eurovision Song Contest back in 2008 and a group of nuns, who have most likely been inspired by the recent phenomenon on The Voice of Italy.

Everyone is somewhat gasping about the non-inclusion of Ira Losco in the first shortlist with the general feeling around the industry being that the Public Broadcasting Services may go ahead and offer a wildcard as is stated in the rules and regulations. This will be made public in a week’s time as Peppi Azzopardi and his dedicated team at WE Media reveal the chosen acts. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the 2015 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest.

Tonight! The Summer Hit Song Contest continues. A music competition which originally took place between 2008 and 2011 and featured Miriam Christine, Neville Refalo, Romina Mamo, Minik and Siconix as winners, with a brand new selection of original songs. The celebrity-packed show is set to host leading singers from the local entertainment scene.

Neville Refalo, winner of the second edition of the Malta Hit Song Contest is the special guest of the fifth show from F Living's Summer Hit Song Contest. He will perform "One Day" composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas to the lyrics of Rita Pace, with which he had won the competition five years ago.

In the words of Richard Stilgoe, it seems that there's a light at the end of the tunnel wherever the 2014 edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is concerned with the organising committee chaired by Claudette Buttigieg publishing an updated list of semi-finalists. This comes into effect for the simple reason that each vocalist is only permitted to perform just ONE song from the television phase onwards.

At a glance, it seems that out of the SEVEN songs that Domenique had initially qualified with to the second phase, there will still be THREE in the competition with "Mara" composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Paul Ellul being the one she will be performing herself, "Ħamsin Sena Nazzjon" composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas to the lyrics of Paul Ellul being performed in a duet featuring Kaya and Nicole Brincat and "Passaġġ" written by Clinton Paul with a yet to be announced performer.

In the meantime, Josef Tabone has decided to withdraw his second song "Orrizonti" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino as initially reported on escflashmalta.com earlier this morning, meaning that another five entries have been brought into the list, according to the number of points received during the second phase of the competition where the judges were; Olivia Lewis, Andrew Attard, Mro Maurizio Schembri, Sharon Deguara Cipriott and Noel D’Anastas.

Tħobbni Kif Jien - Phylisienne Brincat (Philip Vella / Christopher Azzopardi)

Vagabond - Josef Tabone (Clinton Paul)

The FIVE entries that have now managed to sneak into the Top 30 are none other than; "Ensemble" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino with vocals provided by Johanna Galea, "Ġrajjiet" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino with vocals provided by Michela Dallia, "Ħolma ta' Nazzjon" composed by Mark Debono to the lyrics of Rita Pace with vocals provided by Cherylis Camilleri, "Miraklu" composed by Gillian Attard to the lyrics of Rita Pace with vocals provided by Ashlee Amber and "Ngħidulek Grazzi" composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino.

The final change that we could denote in the list below is that Geordie DeBono has opted to keep "Tħobbni Kif Jien" composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Christopher Azzopardi, in the competition with veteran performer; Phyllisienne Brincat. Only two songs remain without a performer at the moment, those being the aforementioned "Passaġġ" and "Mixja li Bdiet" composed by Renato Briffa to the lyrics of Alfred E Baldacchino. On the 25th and 26th January 2014, the Catholic Institute in Floriana played host to The Celebration Pop and Musicals Concert produced by Spiteri Lucas Entertainment, in recognition of their ten years in the entertainment industry. Ample media coverage was given to both evenings due to an impressive line-up, one which included none other than former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Debbie Scerri (1997) and Ludwig Galea (2004) whilst also featuring Pamela, Neville Refalo, Dorothy Bezzina, Eleanor Spiteri, Roger Tirazona and Ivan Spiteri Lucas who have all been part of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in one year, or another.

The show was divided into two (2) acts; Pop and Musicals, in order to maintain the status of what the public were anticipating although in my opinion, it was the second act which shined through, especially with the vocal ranges of certain artists. Looking through the list of numbers once more, I was impressed towards the end of the concert, noting that the phrase save the best for last still exists in show business. Ludwig Galea and Dorothy Bezzina stole the limelight with their rendition of Les Miserables’ Master of the House whilst Pamela was effortless during her take on Wishing You Were Somehow Hear Again from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera.

Nevertheless, when together, the ensemble gave magnificent renditions, especially of One Day More, the classic that will never go unnoticed from Les Miserables. Singing, one of the most prestigious arts around was aided by another form of entertainment, dancing with the Dancel Dance Team directed by Celaine Buhagiar present in various numbers, adding a touch of visual spectacle to the whole show. Whilst the lead vocalists were almost spot on throughout the entire performance, bar a couple of notes from certain specific individuals, it is important to point out the masterful children’s choir under the direction of Neville Refalo, renditions got the audience clapping mid-way through performances.

The lead vocalists are essential and prominent in every show of Spiteri Lucas Entertainment, but one has to point out the opportunities given to the backing vocalists; Claudio Teuma Castelleti, Abigail Critien and Amelia Hope, the latter of which also had the pleasure of performing with the main cast during the first act. A rising star, who is working with renowned songwriter and producer Rene Mamo had a busy repertoire on her hands but dealt with it like a true seasoned professional. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all the latest news about the local music scene.
