In 2001, Fabrizio Faniello managed to garner the ticket to represent Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest with the track Another Summer Night composed by Paul Abela to the lyrics of Georgina Abela before eventually returning for another stint in 2006 with the track I Do which he co-wrote with Aldo Spiteri. Along the years, the male vocalist had managed to triumph in all the major competitions in the country except the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, an event in which he had only managed top three positions.

This year, many had said that his entry Aħfirli Jekk Trid composed by Minik to the lyrics of Rita Pace was the one to beat and indeed, everyone was spot on as the competition that has eluded him for so long has now been conquered. A constant force within the local music scene, Fabrizio managed to revive his career upon entrance into the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2011 as the track No Surrender proved to be a local and foreign hit and ended up being the lead single off his latest album bearing the same name. In an interview given to escflashmalta.com supporting his participation in this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, he stated that he would most likely enter a song in the upcoming edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest if the right melody comes along.

1st Place: Aħfirli Jekk Trid - Fabrizio Faniello (Minik / Rita Pace)

2nd Place: Miegħek Hemm Jien - Neville Refalo (Minik / Rita Pace)

3rd Place: Ħallini Ngħidlek - Nicole Brincat (Minik / Stephen Baldacchino)

Tele-Voting: B'Ħarsitna 'l Fuq - Domenique (Mark Spiteri Lucas / Paul Ellul)

Best Performance: B'Ħarsitna 'l Fuq - Domenique (Mark Spiteri Lucas / Paul Ellul)

Teenage Talent: Kliem Maġija - Kimberly & Lyann (Minik / Lyann)

He had also revealed that the track will be released on iTunes the day following the competition. This means, that it would be the first winning entry of the local competition to be released to the digital music market. Special guests for the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza included Deborah C who had accompanied Fabrizio as a backing vocalist back in 2011 as well as Gianluca who represented Malta at this years' edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. The jury for the evening comprised of Alison Ellul, Deborah C, Clint Spiteri and Ronald Briffa. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for the rest of the results and more news as it becomes available.

Malta: Ninth Programme of Indifest This Evening

Media.Link Communications in collaboration with escflashmalta.com is proud to present the ninth week of the programme Indifest hosted by Mark Azzopardi and Christine Haber through NET Television on Thursday evening as from 20:30 CET onwards. In support of this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, the weekly programme seeks to promote the artists competing in one of three competitions which promote the local language. Whether newcomers or somewhat established, their place is still amongst the general elite. The public has the opportunity to select which three entries they would like to qualify from the 'teenage talent' portion of the competition as well selecting their top favourite within the 'established category' which is offered as a separate award in order to make sure that talent is well appreciated.

The Established Category of this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is a progression towards the future noting a mixture of young and veteran artists who look towards impressing the judges on the night of the competition. In this evenings' programme, first up is a duet featuring Josef and Johanna who will be singing the track Inwegħdek composed by Minik to the lyrics of Stephen Baldacchino. Also on the programme from the same category is Neville Refalo who returns as a soloist with the song Hemm Miegħek Jien composed by Minik to the lyrics of Rita Pace.

The Teenage Category of this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza officially came to a close two weeks ago but the committee will be welcoming back all of the competing artists for a special showcase next week, where they will be performing in front of a panel of judges who determine 60% of the final vote. There will also be a musical guest during this evenings' showcase, that being none other than Alison Ellul whose last participation in a competition came at the 2011 Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the song Numb. In the meantime, joining Alison will be her sisters' dance troupe, Annalise Dance Studio as resident guests of the programme. Remember Indifest returns to NET Television, this evening at 20:30 CET. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for the latest news.

Neville, a male vocalist whose connection with the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza continues to grow with every year noting that this is his fourth consecutive participation. His career has definitely never hit a dead-end post considering that he has also represented the nation abroad on several occasions, making a name for himself and for Malta with a couple of successes. In this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, he is performing the track Hemm Miegħek Jien composed by Minik with lyrics by Rita Pace. Just below, five questions have been asked by the editorial board of escflashmalta.com in order for you to get to know Neville a little bit better. Nevertheless, this is an interview and review with former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Chris and Moira listening to all of the songs and passing their judgement. With regards to Neville, they stated that 'despite the fact that the T's sound prominent, it is a good rock tune and that the vocalist has good expression' offering seven (7) points.

Last year, you took to the stage of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza as part of a trio which also featured the likes of Claire Caruana and Ivan DeBattista in a stunning performance of the track Mhux L-Ewwel Darba composed by Augusto Cardinali to the lyrics of Giovann Attard. This was your first outing without being a soloist, something which many also believe as nervewrecking yet when looking back at your last two participations prior to that with the songs N.Com and Ħajt tal-Kenn both composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas to the lyrics of Rita Pace and Joe Chircop respectively. How did you approach the different performances and what different values did you take up from each experience?

To tell you the truth, last year’s performance was somewhat quite different from the other 2 previous years. Some people might say that in being a trio, the responsibility of the song is shared and so it could be a bit easier than being all alone on stage singing a whole song by yourself. I’d have to say it was quite the contrary! The fact that there are another 2 performers with you on stage adds many further responsibilities as if I make one small mistake which might influence the whole performance negatively, it wouldn’t be fair on my fellow singers on stage who would have given their heart out and see their performance ruined by someone else. This also meant more rehearsals to perfect the song and more difficulties in accommodating all available times for each other. However, as always, where there is a will there’s a way and we were very enthusiastic about how all went on stage. The result was also very encouraging as we came 4th overall. As a person I’m quiter relaxed, especially when performing on stage. In fact, in both previous occasions I didn’t have much problems in preparing both songs and performing them on stage. However last year, as you rightly said in your question, was quite nervewrecking but at the same time extreme fun!

Despite your several outings in local competitions, the Malta Eurovision Song Contest has somewhat eluded you for quite a couple of years having only managed to get through to the finals on one occasion, that also being in a trio alongside Rachel Fabri and Romina Mamo with the track We Can Do Better written by Carm Fenech. Firstly, it is important to point out that hundreds of submissions are received with the hope of making the international competition and therefore, many miss out but nevertheless, what was the feeling of getting through in 2005 and will you be trying to return in 2014?

Back in 2005, it was my first time that I had submitted a song in the MSFE and was ecstatic when on the first attempt I managed to go through, as I always regarded this festival as a big launching pad for a singer’s career. I remember jumping up and down the street when the composer called me to tell me that the song had passed. Nowadays, almost 8 years later I do look back at the festival as very important but not essential to someone’s career. During these past years I’ve managed to get quite a lot of satisfactory experiences both in local activities as well as abroad. I also managed to achieve many of the aims I aspired to when I first started singing some 12 years ago. To tell you the truth, I still wish that one day I pass for this festival as a solo artist as I believe it would be a totally different experience. If I’ll try in 2014 or not depends on many factors as I have quite an important year coming up due to other commitments but should a good opportunity or good song come up I won’t surely give up on it. I’ll wait and see!

Hemm Miegħek Jien, composed by Minik to the lyrics of Rita Pace is one of seven entries by this composer which many believe could be somewhat exhausting of their capacity to write tracks. As an artist, this is the first time that you are working with this duo in particular with your notable partner in song usually being Mark Spiteri Lucas who is also competing with three entries. Would you tell us something about your song and why you felt the reason to work with someone else rather than stick to a formula which has been rather successful?

Hemm Mieghek Jien, this was quite an occasional song. I have to say that I wasn’t going to participate in this year’s festival as I thought that being part of it for the last 3 years was enough for me. However, Minik called me and asked me to listen to this song he had composed as it suited my style of voice. I immediately liked the tune. We twisted and tweaked some parts of it till we found the final result. Since it was the first time that I was working with Minik, it made it all the more different from what I usually had. We gave the song to Rita who, as usual, wrote great lyrics to it with a rather difficult topic. The subject the song talks about is those people who are considered different in society. They might be disabled, gay or just considered inferior. It’s a very positive song which encourages these people never to give up and stand up to be counted!

As one of the judges during the competition Passport 2 Indifest organised by Spiteri Lucas Entertainment in accordance with the regulations stipulated by the committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, you were responsible in whittling down the artists who ultimately came to the selection of Marie Claire Attard Bason and Karen DeBattista with the latter being selected to join the elite competition. Ultimately, the former managed to get through the typical submission process. Do you believe that they both merit their place in the competition?

During the competition Passport 2 Indifest this year, the level of singers was very high. I dare to say even higher than last year. It was extremely difficult to choose who was the best from the final 4. You can imagine how much more difficult it was to select a singer in the final. Both singers were extremely good and the final decision was taken due to very small things which ultimately made Karen prevail. However they were very close. I was very happy to see Marie Claire in the final selection as she is also a very good singer with a lot of potential. This made me feel a bit less guilty after she wasn’t chosen from our competition.

Would you like to say anything to our readers at escflashmalta.com?

I don’t want to be repetitive as I know that many others have said it but I wish to say a very big thank you to this site for supporting local talent the way it does. I also wish to thank all those who have supported me over the years as it was cause of them that I am still in the business. This is not an easy job but all fans of Maltese music make the journey worthwile. Thanks!

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is thought to be one of the finest musical institutions in the country noting that original tracks in Maltese are promoted. Some of the most recent winners of the esteemed competitions are none other than Amber, Mike Spiteri, Deborah C and Annabelle Debono with the most successful songwriters along the years being none other than Ray Agius, Mark Spiteri Lucas and Joe Chircop respectively. In recent years, the event has been supported greatly by escflashmalta.com with two board members present in the committee but for the first time in three years, coverage will be from an outsiders' point of view with the coverage being tweaked ever so slightly in order to promote the acts which will be selected.

The Committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza led by Chairman Mark Azzopardi received a total of seventy-nine (79) entries, from which eight (8) were submitted into the Teenage Category leaving the other seventy-one (71) in the Established Category. It is quite intriguing to note that this is quite a disappointing figure considering that over a hundred (100) songs were submitted in totality over the past three years, signalling that the popularity might be waning, something which is rather unfortunate. The jury for the first phase of the competition included none other than Deborah C, winner of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2012; John Perici Calascione, a Disc Jockey; Darren Carabott, student and Kevin Azzopardi, a musician who was also a judge during the second phase last year.

Karen DeBattista, a nineteen year old performer from Mosta, one of the largest localities in the country has become the first finalist in this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. Whilst not being an entirely new face to the local music scene, it seems that she will be following in the footsteps of Simone Gauci who came out of nowhere during the previous year to win Passport 2 Indifest beating jury favourite Marie Claire Attard Bason. In an extraordinary turn-around, the professional jury put her in the first runner-up position finishing in the same slot for the second year running. It is worth noting that Marie Claire Attard Bason has already competed in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza with the song Ma Rridx Ninbidel composed by Sean Vella to the lyrics of Rita Pace in a first time bid within the local music scene.

Dak Li Għidtli Dakhinar, composed by Dominic Galea with lyrics by Joe Friggieri was the opening track of the competition with Karen DeBattista offering the viewers and the jury a much different rendition to what has become a true Nadine Axisa classic. On the other hand, Marie Claire Attard Bason followed with powerhouse vocals as she performed the song Intlaqt Mal-Mewġ composed by Mark Scicluna to the lyrics of Rita Pace. Once more, she was definitely not challenging Janice Mangion, the original performer, giving her own spin to the track but the arrangement did not really suit the track itself in my opinion and thus left the audience yearning more. Regulations for this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza will be unveiled during the course of the week but nevertheless, songs for Karen DeBattista will be put aside and listened to individually. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news about the local music scene.

KKI 2013: Juries to Select First Finalist

1964 by Annabelle Debono is one of the most iconic tracks to have ever won the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendendenza and later on today, she will be amongst a panel of judges selecting the first finalist for this years' edition of the local spectacle. She will be joined by former participants; Neville Refalo and Janvil whose expertise in field will definitely be a positive characteristic. The two finalists of the Passport 2 Indifest competition are none other than Marie Claire Attard Bason, a former Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza finalist and Karen DeBattista, a former finalist in the Malta Hit Song Contest.

Both have an outstanding resumè and both are relatively young but one will get the direct qualificiation, with the other one choosing whether to submit a track within a normal process. The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is one of the most prestigious singing competitions in the country with one of the reasons being that each of the submitted entries has to be original and in Maltese. Last year, Deborah C was crowned winner with the track Jekk Nużaw Moħħna composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas with lyrics by Joe Chircop whilst the Passport 2 Indifest winner, Simone Gauci finished in a mid-table position with her entry Id F'Id composed by Renato Briffa to the lyrics of Keith Zammit whilst ranking within the top five when it came to tele-voting.

Passport 2 Indifest is a concept drawn up between the committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza which featured two escflashmalta.com editorial board members up until last year as well Spiteri Lucas Entertainment, responsible for the programme Sas-Sitta on NET Television. Apart from the revelation of which performer will be gaining direct qualification into the final of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, next week, the programme will also be raising funds to help Puttinu Cares, an organization which supports families who have children suffering from cancer. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news as soon as it becomes available.

Media.Link Communications takes pride in promoting the local music scene henceforth why they organise the annual Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, a competition in which vocalists have to perform original songs in their respective mother tongue. Ira Losco and Claudia Faniello, two of the most notable stars at the moment both started from this competition before going onto release more material and many will hope to follow in their footsteps. Media.Link Communications in accordance with the committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza worked to include a wildcard into the competition, one which would be granted through a singing competition entitled Passport 2 Indifest held on Sas-Sitta produced by Spiteri Lucas Entertainment.

The recipient of the wildcard last year was Simone Gauci with the track Id F'Id composed by Renato Briffa and penned by Keith Zammit, finishing in a respectable mid-table position. It is worth pointing out that the first finalist selected last week was none other than Karen DeBattista, a former finalist in the Malta Summer Hit Song Contest as well as a second round qualifier in this years' Malta Eurovision Song Contest. Today the semi-final featured Marie Claire Attard Bason, a Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza finalist in 2009 with Ma Rridx Ninbidel and Letizia Seychell who was a contestant in the show Don't Stop Me Now hosted by Eileen Montestin.

The first performance of the duel was done by Letizia Seychell who gave her very own rendition of Kieku Taf? originally sung by Corazon during L-Għanja tal-Poplu competition in 2006. Marie Claire Attard Bason followed with her rendition of the song Ħallini Inħobbok originally performed by Georgina during the Festival Kanzunetta Maltija 1999. The jury as last week was composed of Annabelle Debono, former winner of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza as well as Janvil, runner-up of the 2005 Malta Eurovision Song Contest and Neville Refalo, multiple finalist in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. In the end, it was Marie Claire Attard Bason who won the hearts of the judges and will thus face Karen DeBattista. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com as the result is unveiled next week.

The committee behind the competition led by Mark Azzopardi and including members of the escflashmalta.com editorial team have worked hard to include a number of innovations in the past two years noting the beginning of a seating area which would definitely keep the audience at bay as well as the official preview videos for each track to help aid in terms of promotion. KKI 2012: Ninth Programme of Indifest Tonight

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza has been highly regarded as one of the leading competitions in the local music industry throughout the years and this is due to the fact that it proudly promotes the Maltese language as one of the finest foundations of a whole identity. In fact, in this present day and age, it remains as only one of two showcases alongside the Għanja tal-Poplu which have such a clear tradition of original tracks in the Maltese language. The interest remains extremely high and the turn out in terms of submissions has always been maintained with the quality improving drastically in the past couple of years noting the inclusion of extremely professional judges who have sought to select the best possible tracks to represent the musical mood of the present generation whilst keeping in tact with professional prowess. In the past, there have been a multitude of well known names to finish at the top of the competition with acts such as Claudette Pace, Claudia Faniello, Eleanor Cassar, Mike Spiteri, Miriam Christine, Amber, Lawrence Gray, Ira Losco, Kaya and Annabelle Debono triumphing in the end. The committee behind the competition is led by leading television host Mark Azzopardi who is also acting as producer of the flagship programme Indifest which airs every Tuesday night hosted by Christine Haber and Ronald Briffa with special interviews done by James Cassar.

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza will be hosted for the twenty-first time this year actually and features a host of new, upcoming talent, especially individuals who were part of the teenage category just a couple of years back, rightfully earning their place in the local music industry in recent months. Apart from meeting four (4) people each week, two (2) from the Established Category and two (2) from the Teenage Category, there are also a number of weekly special guests. Last weeks' edition of the programme featured none other than Natasha and Charlene, who were the winners of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza way back in 2004 with the track L-Arka Tal-Libertà as well as in 2008 with the group Is-Sitta as they performed the song Flimkien Nistgħu Nirnexxu. Joining them on the show at a later stage was also Nadine Axisa who was also a winner of the competition in 2003 alongside Roger Tirazona with the track Inħarsu 'l Quddiem.

This years' programme is being produced by none other than Media.Link Communications and thus NET Television but the individuals concerned are Lisa Libreri as well as Mark Azzopardi, who as mentioned above is also the chairman of the committee behind the competition. The decision to have him on a dual role is one of the best ones that has ever been taken and this is because the competition is best promoted in this manner. The first act to take to this stage this evening during Indifest will be none other than Francesca Sciberras who will be performing the track Rebbiħin composed by Miriam Christine and penned by Celestina Sciberras with the second guests on the show being none other than the only trio in this years' competition featuring Neville, Ivan and Claire with the track Mhux L-Ewwel Darba composed by Augusto Cardinali and penned by Giovann Attard. As always, those competing in the Established Category will be promoting their track but will be performing playback

In the meantime, there is also a performance from the teenage category and that will be quite important so to speak due to the fact that the performance will be assessed by a panel of appointed judges in the coming weeks. This will be the final week in which entries from this category will be presented actually noting that next week will mark the announcement of the three (3) finalists, those who will be performing in front of a seated crowd at the Granaries in Floriana. Those who will be taking to the studios to perform this week will be none other than Antonella Rapa who will be singing the track X'Qaltli L-Arzella composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas and penned by Joe Friggieri as well as Maria & Justine who will perform the track Ħbieb ta' Veru composed by Kaya and penned by Christopher Azzopardi. It is to be noted that despite the fact that tele-voting plays a very important role in this latter category, this year, there has been a reduction in the respective percentage owing to the final outcome with just 40% attributed leaving the other 60% to the jury as already mentioned above. The idea is to make sure that the people who make it through to the final stage of the competition ultimately deserve to be there.

Last week, there was also supposed to be the performance by Corinne Caruana but she had to pull out due to being ill unfortunately with rescheduling also taking place noting that she will be appearing in the programme next week in order to promote her track Dan Mhux Tmiem. Nevertheless, there will be a guest for this weeks' programme as has been the case in previous weeks and this time round it will be none other than Klinsmann, a two time participant in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza having finished in third place back in 2007 as well as winning the public award with the track KC1FM whilst taking part also last year with the track Ħajjitna most likely finishing in second place in the tele-voting portion of the competition having been in the position for a very long time. Make sure to tune into NET Television tonight at 20:30 CET to watch another filled programme of Indifest.
