Malta: Interview with Raquel Galdes (KKI 13)

Raquel, a young female vocalist who does not dare to dream big is into her first final of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza having never tried to get through to the competition before hand. She will be performing the song Mhux Pupa Biss composed by Minik with lyrics by Rita Pace. Just below, five questions have been asked by the editorial board of escflashmalta.com in order for you to get to know Raquel a little bit better. Nevertheless, this is an interview and review with former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Chris and Moira listening to all of the songs and passing their judgement. With regards to Raquel, they stated that 'she has 'Dido' type of voice, and if great at changing from chest to head voice but a bit too much at times. She needs to use it as a too for dynamics'. At the end, they decided to award her with six (6) points.

Raquel, on the night of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, you will be performing the track Mhux Pupa Biss composed by Minik to the lyrics of Rita Pace. According to initial public feedback, it seems that your entry has been received extremely well by the public, with the poll on escflashmalta.com as well as the official tele-voting figures ranking you extremely high. Would you care to share with us the meaning of the song and did you imagine it would be such a success?

This is my first year in Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, as well as my first try. I did not expect it to be such a success and I am so surprised! The song is about the materialism that we live in. There are people who don’t consider any emotions that they can cause to others. They treat others badly while others suffer! The word ‘pupa’ is an adjective that many guys use to describe girls, while ignoring how they really feel and what they really want.. and this hurts sometimes.

Throughout the years, the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza has created a relatively concrete career for artists within the local music scene, the most recent being that of Amber who went onto reach the final of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on three occasions, join Kurt Calleja as a backing vocalist abroad and also perform with renowned tenor Joseph Calleja on The Granaries during his annual concert last year. What does it mean for you to be in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza knowing the possibilities that could lie ahead?

This is a great motivation for me! It encourages to work more as an opportunity might surprise me and I want to be 100% ready for it. I think that Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is a great opportunity as well as a great exposure.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoK1I7NbHGU

The Established Category of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza has been said to be losing a bit of edge unfortunately with all of the upcoming artists who are seemingly passing through to the latter stages of the competition. As a newcomer, you are one of such artists who have come under fire from the general public in thinking that you might be somewhat presumptuous in thinking that the rise to fame and success is this easy and that amendments should be made to the rules and the regulations of the showcase. What is your point of view with regards to this and what would you say to the commentators?

I have been singing from the age of 4. There was a time when I thought that giving up was the best solution to be taken as there wasn’t such a good feedback but then, I worked harder on a style that suits me much more. To be at this stage for me wasn’t that easy. It seems easy to the public as it was my first try as well as my first year in Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, but there has to be a start point in every career. To the commentators I would like to mention that nobody was popular from the beginning and every artist have a different beginning as well as a different career. This might look like my start, and I think that I deserve it after my hard work.

Raquel, apart from being a complete newcomer to the local music scene, you are also one of the youngest artists to compete in this years’ edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza and with that sweet voice and lovely charm, it seems that the people warm up to you relatively easily. With the younger generation, we always prefer to denote that it would be the beginning of a long career but nevertheless, what are your plans for the immediate future following your participation within this competition?

It depends on the opportunities that I will be given. I will continue working on my voice as of course there are a lot of things that have to be improved on.

What would you like to tell our readers at escflashmalta.com?

I hope that you like my entry in Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza! Thankyou for supporting me and all the other singers to make this festival such a success and thankyou for all your positive feedback. Your support gives me more motivation and encourages me to work more on my voice!

Media.Link Communications, organisers of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza have just unveiled the twenty finalists in their respective running order. The fifty entries which made it through the first phase of the competition were judges at the studios of NET Television by a panel of four judges comprised of four performers including; Amber, Claudia Calleja, Lyndsay and Clint Spiteri. They represent various genres of the industry and somewhat cement their place in music. Apart from that, it is important to note that some of them already have a background in the competition having judges other phases in the past.

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is thought to be one of the finest musical institutions in the country noting that original tracks in Maltese are promoted. Some of the most recent winners of the esteemed competitions are none other than Amber, Mike Spiteri, Deborah C and Annabelle Debono with the most successful songwriters along the years being none other than Ray Agius, Mark Spiteri Lucas and Joe Chircop respectively. In recent years, the event has been supported greatly by escflashmalta.com with two board members present in the committee but for the first time in three years, coverage will be from an outsiders' point of view with the coverage being tweaked ever so slightly in order to promote the acts which will be selected.

The Committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza led by Chairman Mark Azzopardi received a total of seventy-nine (79) entries, from which eight (8) were submitted into the Teenage Category leaving the other seventy-one (71) in the Established Category. It is quite intriguing to note that this is quite a disappointing figure considering that over a hundred (100) songs were submitted in totality over the past three years, signalling that the popularity might be waning, something which is rather unfortunate. The jury for the first phase of the competition included none other than Deborah C, winner of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2012; John Perici Calascione, a Disc Jockey; Darren Carabott, student and Kevin Azzopardi, a musician who was also a judge during the second phase last year.
