MESC '14: PBS Kicks Off Promotional Schedule

On the 29th November, the Public Broadcasting Services made public the names of the artists and their respective entries for the upcoming edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, through the programme Xarabank, produced by WE Media. Since then, the artists have been really busy, with the recording of the postcards, and the clips, which have now been published and seen by thousands of people all over the world. Since then, each of the artists has undergone several technical recordings, in anticipation for the clips, which Nevertheless, as the competition draws closer, one will be able to note a series of interviews through all of the frequencies provided by the Public Broadcasting Services. has been in contact with one of the committee members behind this years' edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, Gordon Bonello to see where the artists will be making their respective guest appearances. Whilst we won't be publishing the full schedule of artists, we are pleased to reveal that there are nine slot allocations for each entry, something which is brilliant considering that there is less than five (5) weeks remaining. On all occasions, the official audio file or preview video is played, and is most likely accompanied by an interview. The chosen programmes are as follows; Niskata hosted by Angela Agius, TVAM hosted by Norma Saliba, Pablo Micallef and Joe Mifsud, TVPM presented by Corazon; all on TVM as well as a series of radio programmes; including Carlo’s Breakfast Show on Magic FM, Mario Laus’ afternoon show on Radju Malta, Breakfast Show on Radju Malta, and Euromix by Frederick Zammit on Radju Malta 2.

Finally, every day, prior to the six o’clock news bulletin, there will be a showing one of the entries competing in the competition, whilst prior to the eight o’clock news there will be the airing of the preview video along with a feature of someone different. This way, the Public Broadcasting Services will generate interest amongst the general public. No details with regards to the tickets, hosts or special guests have yet been given but we urge you to stay tuned to for all of the latest news as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime, the Official Reviews will be commencing this Friday morning, with our esteemed panel of critics ready to analyse this years’ crop of entries. Lastly, do not forget to submit your vote in the poll which is being organised in collaboration with ONE Radio 92.7.

Sophie, a nineteen year old, originally from Malta but based in the United Kingdom, has successfully entered the local music charts as published by 89.7 Bay with the track Lil’ Game. This is rather surprising, especially days after the official music video for her entry Let the Sunshine In co-written with Lou Mullen, Alexander Dew, and Adam Packard was made available by the Public Broadcasting Services. It is well worth noting that this will be her second participation in the event, having also made the cut back in 2011 with the song Love to Love You which she co-wrote with Junior Eurovision Song Contest winning songwriter, Elton Zarb.

In 2006, Sophie managed to triumph in the Malta Junior Song for Europe competition, with the track, Extra Cute which she claims to have written, something which could be the case especially noting that she has been writing her own material for quite some time. Every now and then, the female artist would like to make a splash in her home country, Malta and therefore it does not come as a surprise that she has entered the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, or that she has managed to enter the charts on 89.7 Bay. A new entry at number #8, Lil' Game is also co-written with Elton Zarn and has given Sophie several success stories in the United Kingdom. Stay tuned to for all the latest news.

In recent days, the Public Broadcasting Services published the names of the entries competing in next years' edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, an effort which will see someone step into the shoes of Gianluca whose entry Tomorrow co-written by Boris Cezek and Dean Muscat finished in eighth place. The event, slated to take place on the 7th and 8th February at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre will see to the participation of twenty (20) acts, all vying for the unique prize of representing the country at the biggest musical event in Europe.

At first glance, two names stand out, and of course, those are of two former representatives of Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest; Miriam Christine and Fabrizio Faniello. On second look, I would have to note more artists who have returned to the competition, including the likes of Andreana, Romina Mamo, Wayne William, Sophie DeBattista; a former Junior Eurovision Song Contest representative and Pamela; backing vocalist for Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2010 and 2011 respectively. It's always positive to see artists who have been missing for a period of time, because it means that they rekindled their flame after a couple of years off.

The newcomers to the festival are also ones which are very much intriguing to denote with Christabelle Borg never declaring herself interested in representing Malta abroad. The four time Best Solo Artist Award winner at the BMAs has thrown her hat into the ring as she heads one of the twenty (20) available bids. Despite being a renowned figure, Daniel Testa's Junior Eurovision Song Contest days are well behind him and his days at a DJ at 89.7 Bay are helping define a personal genre, one which he will be taking to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest. Joining him there is Ryan Paul Abela, son of Maestro Paul Abela who has written some of Malta's most iconic entries for the international showcase.

Two final newcomers worth a mention are Debbie Stivala and Raquel Galdes, the latter having been a finalist in this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza and the former being a collaborator with notable band, Tribali. On the other hand, the other artists in the field were all present during this years' edition, including none other than; Amber, Davinia, Jessika, Franklin Calleja, Chris Grech, Corazon and Deborah C. It is worth noting that Richard Edwards has joined forces with sister Michelle Mifsud in a band known as Fire Light. We urge you to stay tuned to as the latest news about the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2014 is unraveled.

In 2008, Daniel Testa represented Malta at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest with the track Junior Swing finishing in fourth place with one hundred (100) points. Since then, the male vocalist has been quickly building up a career for himself, taking up a position at leading radio station, 89.7 Bay as a disc jockey whilst working on new songs, including a potential entry for the upcoming edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest. As previously published on, he has worked with Stephen Rudden, a former representative of the United Kingdom at the international event.

We are pleased to announce that the coverage on during this weekends' proceedings will be led by an editorial member, two former representatives of Malta at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest as well as an artist manager who requires no formal introduction. Sophie DeBattista and Daniel Testa have both accepted the offer of the editorial team along with Trevor Fenech who under his guidance saw to the success and growth of Claudia Faniello. He is currently working with young vocalist, Daniel Testa, shaping up several areas of his music career. are pleased to have such a competent team of inviduals who will be listening to the twelve (12) songs including that of Malta, entitled The Start performed by Gaia Cauchi. Stay tuned to this portal for all of the latest news.

In 2006, a young blonde girl by the name of Sophie took to the stage of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest with the song Extra Cute obtaining a mid-table placing. Just five years later, that girl had grown up into a little woman and took to the stage of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the track Love to Love You which she co-wrote alongside Elton Zarb. Based in the United Kingdom at the moment, Sophie has maintained a respectable name having recently been selected as the opening act for r'n'b star, Ciara and reaching the finals of an illustrious songwriting competition.

Sophie's Official Website which could be accessed here is offering a FREE download of a brand new single, that entitled Lil' Game which she also co-wrote with Elton Zarb. It is expected that recent material published by the female vocalist will all be part of her debut album released through Totally Sophie Music and distributed by Universal Music. Whilst pop will always be the main genre for the female vocalist, she is somewhat fusing it into r'n'b in order to create a new urban sound which will be either a hit or miss. The release of the track is being accompanied by an official music video which was shot in a pub and shows Sophie playing a little game with two eligible bachelors. It is a decent effort but I know that she could do much better. Stay tuned to for all of the latest news.

Sophie DeBattista, a semi-finalist at the 2011 edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the track Love to Love You which she wrote to the composition of Elton Zarb is currently representing her home country in the best possible way having had the opportunity to perform during the Musicalize Concert at the IndigO2 Arena. The line-up for the concert which Sophie had been a part of included Lady Leshurr, Little Nikki and Ciara, the American r'n'b star who is currently on the verge of a music return with a brand new album.

Sophie felt like she needed to get the crowd going from the get go and therefore made sense to open with a cover of the song Price Tag, originally performed by Jessie J. She quickly followed it up with Independent Miss, an original track which she co-wrote with Elton Zarb, the same songwriting duo who are currently working on a debut album. The third track in her set was Jump The Gun and going from one stage to another, she seemed to enjoy every second of the thrill that one gets when performing on stage.

At the end of her performance, Sophie stated 'I would like to thank all the lovely people who came down here to support me tonight. I know many of you travelled a long distance to be here, and for me this is absoutely amazing, I feel so blessed. I would also like to thank Ben, Sophie and all at Musicalize, together with all the other fantastic acts tonight for making  me feel very welcome on my debut at a major event'. Stay tuned to for all of the latest news about Sophie and local artists.
