With temperatures already soaring at 29 Degrees Celsius, it is fair to say that Malta is looking towards an excruciatingly warm summer. Nevertheless, the public will hope to find solace in the blissful tunes that will emerge out of the local music industry, two (2) of which were made public earlier this week, "Keep Me In Love" by The New Victorians and "2 Hot 2 Handle" by Johnny Vincent & Rikki Lee.

"Keep Me In Love", the second single by The New Victorians, taken from their upcoming debut album set to be released later on this month, is a genre of music which has not been really experimented upon in Malta, yet closely resembles the sound emitted by Lauren Aquilina, the singer/songwriter with Maltese descent who is based in the United Kingdom, and is currently signed to Island Records. In support of this release, an accompanying music video has been shot, produced and directed in three (3) different locations by Malcolm Debono. The New Victorians will be giving a major performance at the Greek Theatre on the 5th June as part of Earth Garden. It also happens to be the launch date for their highly anticipated debut album.

"2 Hot 2 Handle", the latest music release by Rikki Lee, marks a second consecutive collaboration, albeit this time with Johnny Vincent, an upcoming DJ from Vienna, Austria. On first listen, the song instantly screams summer, noting that the thumping beginning is only eclipsed by an extremely strong chorus. Rikki Lee has been known to own the summer months with previous releases including "Feel Alive", "Smile" and "Lies". We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news from the local music scene.

Music-making sister duo The New Victorians have just released their debut single ‘Dustpile' which was also accompanied by a music video. “The song is about trying to be a good person – sweeping up dust – and someone else – the cat jumping in – making a mess all over again...” said Bettina  (one of the sisters).

The New Victorians, fronted by Sister duo Bettina and Philippa, is made up of Kurt Vella on drums, Pete Farrugia on percussion, Sean Borg on violin, Ryan Abela on double bass, Bettina on keys and Philippa on guitar. The band had a number of Live performances lined up before their release, namely Rockestra, Earth Garden and Music & Steel amongst others.

Their three-song EP, which includes their much loved ‘Somebody To Love’ cover, current single – ‘Dustpile’ and their first claim to fame – ‘Tom , Dick & Harry’ which won them a song writing competition in the US, can be purchased from iTUNES and all other digital portals worldwide.

Phillipa added “As musicians and as people, if someone else is in need, we have to help out. If we’re one body, the mouth screams when the toe is being stepped on, and it is the mouth that has to speak for the rest of the body .. So that’s our little activist song.”

The duo will be performing during Rockestra in September and look forward to releasing a full album in the coming months. In the mean time they are keeping busy with rehearsals, recording and lots of song-writing! Philippa & Bettina Cassar, Kurt Vella, Sean Borg, Pete Farrugia and Ryan Paul Abela are collectively known as The New Victorians, a new age project managed by Howard Keith of Jagged House Studios, the same individual responsible for acts such as Airport Impressions, Tribali, The Rifffs and Ira Losco. In releasing their first original single, The New Victorians have gone for a quirky sound, an equally intriguing music video and lyrics which at first might not make sense, but the whole package is one which brings up a sense of professionalism, awaiting for comes next.

"Dustpile" was officially launched during the Farsons Great Beer Festival where The New Victorians were the supporting act of international singing sensation Lauren Aquilina, who has recently signed with a major record label in the United Kingdom, following the success of her three extended-plays. Howard Keith has gone on to state on several occassions that The New Victorians are a professional bunch to work with and people will enjoy listening to the sound they create once the debut album is released. MMAs 2014: Interview with Noel Magri (MMM)

Whilst the focus of the local music industry and most of the continent is on the upcoming edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, it is worth pointing out that this years' edition of the Malta Music Awards are set to take place on Sunday 9th February at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre in Ta' Qali. Therefore, escflashmalta.com got in touch with Noel Magri, from Mega Music Management to oversee the preparations whilst having a look at former editions of the prestigious event.

On the 20th October 1995, Mega Music Management organised the first edition of the Malta Music Awards, a different time in the local music scene with the participation in the Eurovision Song Contest considered to be the elite point a vocalist or a songwriter could reach at the time. Looking back, why did you feel that such recognition had to be given, and was it too late a start?

At that time, efforts were being made by local singers and musicians to improve their standard and although many countries were honouring their artists for their achievements, there was nothing similar in Malta, and I thought of creating an Awards show giving due recognition to artists for their work throughout the past year, and to motivate them to better their standards.  The first edition was a huge success and all artists and those involved in the music scene wanted this kind of event be held yearly.

It is fair to say that the professional jury behind the choices made at the Malta Music Awards have been rather on the money in their choices for the Best Newcomer with recipients including; Olivia Lewis, Glen Vella, Miriam Christine, Hooligan, Red Electrick and Mikaela amongst others. How rewarding is it to see that artists who are bestowed this prestigious honour succeeding in their career?

Our intention has and will always be, to award the best talent at the time, and to help them succeed in their musical career.   It is rewarding to see artists who have won awards, being successful over the years, and that the MMA’s has given them that much needed confidence to move forward and improve their all round performance.

In 2013 and 2014, the Public Broadcasting Services decided to conduct an experiment, and hold the Malta Music Weekender, which basically features a weekend of local talent, kicking off with the Malta Eurovision Song Contest and then following it up with the Malta Music Awards. This experiment has been seen to be extremely positive and has generated interest amongst both local and international audiences alike. What was your initial idea to such a proposal and will you be implementing any changes this time round?

From the very first edition, my aim was to help better the standards of local music in general, and to help artists succeed in the International scene.   Having a sound backing is important to hold such a professional show, and the idea of holding the PBS Music Weekender has been very successful.  Holding two major local events in one weekend has helped to attract more attention from the Maltese general public, and give the local artists a major platform to showcase their talent.

Cliff Richard, Blue, Peter Andre, Robin Gibb and Bob Sinclar have all been invited to Malta on behalf of Mega Music Management, making the Island a better attraction in the entertainment scene. It has become somewhat at the best interest of everyone to denote the best possible attractions that such events can promise. Should the public be expecting any foreign special guests during this years’ edition of the Malta Music Awards, possibly even performing at the Malta Eurovision Song Contest?

There will be foreign guest singers performing during the Eurovision Festival, coming from the Eurovision background, however this year’s edition of the MMA’s will see a very strong local line-up with 14 top performing acts, plus an after show concert by Xirka Rock which is expected to blow the roof down.  Certainly, not to be missed.

Gaia Cauchi, winner of the 2013 edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest was selected by the Public Broadcasting Services to represent Malta following her International Achievement Award at the Malta Music Awards last year. Would you go as far as to predicting the artist who might be doing the same honour for the country in a couple of months time and how proud as a company were you to be recognised in such a manner?

Last year, we recognised Gaia’s talent and we honoured her for her achievements.  PBS decision to select Gaia reaped benefits and I would go as far as proposing the same method be used to select our Eurovision representative in the coming years.  We are honoured to have exposed such young talent who achieved such a huge success.  There are various young promising singers who, if they are well looked after, can achieve success Internationally.

The Rifffs, Airport Impressions, Red Electrick, The Crowns, Norbert, Plan Zero, Andi, Sophie, The New Victorians, Ira Losco, Gaia and Winter Moods are all being given the opportunity to perform during this years’ edition of the Malta Music Awards. What should the public be expecting from these acts, and will there be any special surprises, maybe which you could reveal?

All the major artists will be performing their songs for the first time in public, and obviously having such a majestic set-up and stage, we will be looking forward to their performances.    It is worth mentioning the new talent who will be exposed in this show and who I’m sure, will go down very well with the crowd.  People hear their music on Radio stations, but probably are not aware that these are Maltese!

Would you like to say anything to our readers at escflashmalta.com?

The MMA’s have always been very well attended by the public, and my appeal is to keep on supporting this show which is promoting local music and motivating artists to improve their product. Ticket prices are only Eur 10.

It is somewhat difficult to spot the best possible talent in Malta without having a clue to what is out there due to the fact that busy lives are being led but nevertheless, escflashmalta.com received a tip not too long ago to look out for Bettina and Philippa, a sister duo whose combined efforts are being released as The New Victorians. Howard Keith of Jagged House is producing their debut album and therefore, it seems that the two ladies have a rock behind them as they receive the best possible guidance.

Back in 2011, they competed in the International Alchemy Songwriting Competition held in the United States of America, where they were announced as Youth Division Winners. The track which had garnered attention bears the name Tom, Dick and Harry and was performed during their set at the Beland Music Festival earlier this summer. In the meantime, around two (2) months ago, they recorded a cover of the track Someboday to Love, originally by the group Queen. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news from the local music industry but to keep an eye on The New Victorians, make sure to visit their pages on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Soundlcoud.

It has been a great start to what looks like an amazing week full of live music – the Beland Music Festival kicked off in spectacular fashion last night with the participation of local heartthrob Kevin Borg who serenaded the crowd with his magical voice and charisma. The Beland Music Festival this year moved from the Market Square to Bulebel and one can say that the move was a success, the festival got bigger and if today’s concert was anything to go by one can easily say it got even better.

Barber’s Cut, a new upcoming band led by Kelly Busuttil opened proceedings and got the crowd going; showing that they indeed have potential. The audience seemed to have enjoyed the relatively unknown band, who mixed it up playing some of the most popular hits. They were followed by the talented Glen Vella and Pamela, who entertained the crowd with a number of popular cover versions. As the time went on, the crowd got bigger and bigger, everyone awaiting the arrival of Kevin Borg and when he finally took the stage Kevin received a hero’s welcome in Bulebel.

He kicked off proceedings with his Swedish Idol Winner’s single With Every Bit of Me and continued with a mix of cover versions and songs from his own repertoire. He closed the first part of the concert with his Malta Eurovisision entry, Needing You, where he was accompanied by former Eurovision representative Glen Vella, Pamela, Josef Tabone and Janice Mangion. The second part of the show was as strong and the crowd cherished every moment with cheering, waving and singing at the top of their lungs to Kevin’s hits. Kevin was clearly moved and described the event as being even better than his Swedish Idol final as he had never expected so many people to attend the event in aid of Puttinu Cares.

Kevin encouraged the people to attend and donate to this genuine cause. Tonight’s music festival will feature Malta’s top female artist – Ira Losco is set to take the stage for her first Summer gig and her first gig after the launch of her album The Fire which proved to be a major success. She is expected to sing some of her latest songs along with a few numbers from her previous records, she will be supported by The New Victorians an up and coming band and also Planet Seed fronted by Klinsmann. For more details on what to expect during the Beland Music Festival you can visit the programme here or their official Facebook Page.

It is important to note that on Thursday, the organizers behind the Beland Music Festival saw it fit to organize a big screen in order to support Malta’s bid in the Eurovision Song Contest – so we encourage you to join with your family and friends, grab your Maltese flags and on Thursday go and watch the Second Semi-Final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Bulebel as part of the Beland Music Festival. The atmosphere is expected to be electrifying as there is nothing more special than cheering for the Maltese representative together and creating a mini Eurovision atmosphere here in Malta.

Apart from enjoying the live music for a great cause, at the Beland Music Festival you can chill and relax, there’s a children’s area and a number of stalls where people can just sit there as the concert is ongoing. There is something for all the family and for all the music lovers it is something you surely can’t miss as apart from donating towards Puttinu Cares you would be also supporting the local talent who invest so much time and effort to deliver a great product. So make sure to visit the Beland Music Festival and donate something for a great cause. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news.

One can see the festival as an opening to the summer months activities as other activities take place all around the island during the summer months but most of them would not be held on such a grand scale. To organize such a massive event is not easy and Beland would not have been able to provide such a field with different artists were it not for the support they found from their sponsors. The event is free of charge but those in attendance are encouraged to give a small donation that will go directly to Puttinu cares as for another year, the event is being held in aid of Puttinu Care which works for such a noble case. So remember from the 10th of May to the 17th of May your entertainment spot should be in Zejtun at the Beland Music Festival. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for more information.

Ira Losco began her music career relatively early and achieved success as she built a road to the top noting that she went from a variety of local competitions to represent Malta within the Eurovision Song Contest, earning the first runner-up position with 7th Wonder composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Gerard James Borg. Upon her return, she was a true hero and she has built a reputable career, releasing her fifth studio album entitled The Fire, earlier this year. Working with the likes of producer, Howard Keith of Jagged House, Ira has always managed to carve out an image which keeps her grounded and true to herself.

Her latest studio album has received rave reviews from local critics and has also led the albums chart on iTunes for five consecutive weeks and the next step is promoting the material off it through a number of live performances, and one of the first will be coming at the Beland Music Festival. Alongside her band, Ira will be performing with a nine piece band on Saturday, 11th May and remember that all of the proceeds would be going to Puttinu Cares, a charity which supports children in need. Ira Losco is a true, seasoned performer and in recent months, her live performances have been absolutely stunning. This will be one of the events of the season and despite following the tough act in the form of Kevin Borg on the day before, she will have the crowd at the palm of her hand considering how much she adores all of her fans.

Supporting Ira Losco on the night will be none other than two other bands, one of them being Planet Seed which is duly fronted by Klinsmann, finalist at the Malta Eurovision Song Contest on several occasions and the other one being known as The New Victorians. In the meantime, the evening shall be hosted by Moira Delia from Ilsien in-Nisa which airs on ONE Television as well as Christian Micallef who is known for hosting Replay on NET Television. Remember that you may purchase your copy of The Fire on iTunes. Stay tuned to escflashmalta.com for all of the latest news as soon as it becomes available.
