Stunning! One word, commonly used as a phrase to describe perfection. Somewhat rare that I use such language, for those who have come to know me, believe that I am difficult to please.

Last night at Rockestra, an annual event held under the auspices of the Office of the President of Malta in support of the Malta Community Chest Fund, I used this word a mere 3 times; for the collective Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Sigmund Mifsud, and then for the powerhouse female vocals of Julie Zahra and Raquela.

Raquela, a stand-out artist, whose talent has been showcased time-and-time again on the national stage, having been in the finals of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in 2009, 2011 and 2013 as well as Teatru Unplugged 2013, was the highlight of Rockestra in 2014, performing a duet of "Say Something" with Konrad Pule, originally by A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera. This year she took on, "A Thousand Years", originally by Christina Perri. Tried by several other local acts before her, all of whom were sub-standard, Raquela was in her element and zone, getting a rapturous applause mid-way through the performance.

Julie Zahra, one-half of Malta's representative duo at the Eurovision Song Contest back in 2004, recently back to Malta following a lengthy stay in the United Kingdom was absolutely flawless in both her numbers, starting out with a jaw-dropping performance of Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever", where she swayed left to right in a beautiful white gown, before giving an impeccable performance of "The Phantom of the Opera" in a duet with Frank Cardassia.

The two ladies were truly in a league of their own, and gave performances which bring talented foreign acts to shame and ridicule. The evening, a positive celebration of talent, featured several well known artists, all of whom gave their absolute best. Notable mentions include Raquel Galdes, Ludwig Galea, Justin GaleaChris Grech, Brooke Borg, Lawrence Gray, and Victorio Gauci of The Crowns. "Mary Jane", the brand new single released by The Crowns, a pop/rock band which features; Gianluca Cappitta, Chris Ciantar, Victorio Gauci, Jean Paul Mollicone and Luke Vella Clark is the first track off the continuation of a journey, one which started in 2010, eventually leading to the release of the debut album "Someone Else" in 2013. Spawning 7 successful singles, including a remix, The Crowns have never looked back, and it seems like this new release will only lead to an extremely busy 2015.

Co-produced by David Vella from Temple Studios, and mastered by Fred Kevorkian from Avatar Studios in the United States, “Mary Jane” is fresh, modern and finds itself promoting a lyrical twist, a twofold-meaning so to speak, due to the fact that it primarily refers to a woman, whilst secondarily referring to that same woman as a drug, which is addictive, and eventually destructive.

In support of the release, a music video has been directed, produced, filmed and edited by Matthew James Borg. The main aim was to create a party scene, where everyone is having fun. The Crowns would like to thank everyone who has been a part of this project, including Marc Calleja Bayliss of Ironic PR & Artist Management, Luke Engerer for styling the guys with brands from IQ at Baystreet, Charmaine Gauci for the make-up as well as Keith Shaw and Josephine Abela for their hospitality. 'The Celebrity Night' is a weekly television programme which has become somewhat synonymous with Saturday evening, is broadcast on F Living Channel. The series which officially kicked off at the beginning of October revolves around the one-to-one interviews, which speak of class, decadence and wit, and have become synonymous with Deo Grech's presenting style.

Victorio Gauci, a male singer/songwriter, who is instantly recognizable as the lead vocalist of The Crowns, a local band which also features Gianluca Cappitta, Luke Vella Clark, Jean-Paul Mollicone and Chris Ciantar, is very experience despite a relatively young age. Having been through to the finals of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, L-Għanja tal-Poplu, the Summer Hit Song Contest and the Malta Eurovision Song Contest as a solo performer, Victorio does not look back, and seeks to grow his reputation, albeit as The Crowns' lead vocalist. With a debut album in 2013, the band's effort were recognised both at the Malta Music Awards and the Bay Music Awards and are currently writing their sophomore material.

Christabelle Curmi, a veteran of the local music scene, having amassed two first runner-up finishes in L-Għanja tal-Poplu; in 2014 for the song "Kif Xrobbtuli l-Menti" as well as in 2009 with "Irrid Ngħix Il-Poeżija" alongside Frank O'Neill, has recently issued "Bizzilla", a collection of folkloristic songs. Christabelle prefers to sing in our mother tongue, Maltese rather than English, owing to the depth of the language, and the beauty which it is known to have. Also on this week's show as the third guest is Adrian Grech, the guru who has re-invented himself into a healthier person.

This and much more during this week's episode of 'The Celebrity Night' which airs on Saturday night at 20:30 on F Living Channel. We urge you to stay tuned to escflashmalta.com even through Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news about the local music scene.

Malta: Audience in Awe of Majestic Male Duet

Rockestra, an event in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund, has always been billed as 'not to be missed' and with that slogan managed to attract it's largest crowd yet. Around twelve thousand (12,000) people flocked to the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre in Ta' Qali in order to witness some of the best talent that the local music scene has to offer along with the musical accompaniment of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra led by Maestro Sigmund Mifsud as well as four female backing vocalists; Angela Spiteri, Jackie Pace Delicata, Anna Azzopardi and Louisa Frendo Wirth. With several eurostars in attendance, it was quite difficult to select the strongest performance of the evening but we did manage to come to a conclusion that the evening belonged to male vocalists; Ludwig Galea and Chris Grech.

Ludwig Galea, a former representative for Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest back in 2004 was joined by Chris Grech, a finalist in this years' edition of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in an astonishing version of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. The audience was in awe of their vocal capabilities, and showed their appreciation by clapping, and singing throughout the whole performance. The event was star studded and two of the closing acts who drew the most attention and came possibly a joint second in terms of performance were none other than Ira Losco and Kevin Borg. The pop/rock princess took to the stage in a regal robe and a crown in order to perform another hit song by the group Queen, that being Radio Gaga. The first runner-up at this years' Malta Eurovision Song Contest, Kevin performed Livin' on a Prayer which many remembered him performing during Idol in Sweden. The public were so enthralled by the performances that they ended up clapping in sync, something that rarely happens in public events.

Whilst those three artists managed to bring the house down, it is unfair not to mention artists such as Lawrence Gray, Claudia Faniello and Raquela whose vocal capabilities were stretched to the maximum especially with regards to the latter. Raquela, a participant within the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in 2009, 2011 and 2013 showed the public that she has a range beyond compare in a lyric-less song where harmonisation was key before returning for a duet version of the song Hallelujah alongside Sandrina. The concert was held under the distinguished patronage of The President of Malta and Mrs Abela and is supported by Parliamentary Secretariat for Culture and Local Government, Good Causes Fund, Malta Tourism Authority, Malta Fairs and Convention Centre, HSBC Bank, Banif Bank, Bank of Valletta, Vodafone, Tumas Group and Hard Rock Café. Someone Else, the debut studio album by The Crowns was officially released on the 3rd May 2013 and has received rave reviews across the board for a pop/rock/acoustic infused sound. Each of the five members of The Crowns has a specific role but when they come together, it is like a stroke of genius. Gianluca Cappitta is on guitars and backing vocals, Jean-Paul Mollicone on keyboards, Chris Ciantar is on the bass, Luke Vella Clark plays the drums and ultimately, Victorio Gauci provides vocals.

escflashmalta.com had the pleasure of being the first online media to promote the group when they first burst out into the scene as they released their debut single, Memories. Since then, they have released another three singles; Out of Nowhere, Never Ends and Home and are now preparing for their fifth single release, that entitled Midday Crisis. The collaborative feel of the group is very much felt throughout the album and their brand new single which is very much in the vein of their fourth release encompasses an edgier sound. Victorio's vocals are haunting, because they are seemingly thumping against the backdrop of strings and drums. Once more, escflashmalta.com are pleased to reveal a forty second clip from the fifth single, Midday Crisis whilst inviting you to stay tuned for more news only here on this portal.

Memories, an aptly titled debut single for the group, The Crowns when they had just started out in the local music scene just two years ago and indeed, the success of that particular track has somewhat been emphatic, so much so that the group is going strong and will soon be releasing their debut album, a collection of original songs. Gianluca Cappitta is on guitars and backing vocals, Jean-Paul Mollicone on keyboards, Chris Ciantar is on the bass, Luke Vella Clark plays the drums and ultimately, Victorio Gauci puts in a solid vocal performance. The release of their premier collection is being preceded by a brand new single entitled Home which as has always been the case is co-written between themselves.

Temple Studios have been the home for The Crowns since their inception and one could instantly note on a first listen that there was a lot of attention put towards the production of this track. Professionalism is key and the fourth single is just a continuation of the stunning sound which the group has come to create together. Whilst the effort is still considered to fall under a pop/rock genre, one would get the slight feeling of indie coming in, that sound which has become characterised by groups such as Of Monsters and Me as well as Mumford and Sons. The vocals are stunning and the whole production comes across as masterful. The official release of Home is expected in the next couple of days and whilst XFM had the first airplay a couple of hours back, escflashmalta.com is proud to offer you an exclusive snippet of the track. Stay tuned for more local releases in the coming days, weeks and months!
