Portugal: RTP announce March Final

“Festival da Canção” which is the Portuguese selection for the Eurovision Song Contest is back! RTP (the Portuguese national broadcaster), has announced that the selection is set to be scheduled on the 10th of March. The regulation changes are to be announced in December via the broadcaster’s website. There will be no internal selection but RTP will be launching an open call to all those artists who are interested to take part in this prestigious festival.

It is quite interesting to note that this will be the 46th representative from Portugal, a nation which is yet to win the Eurovision Song Contest and with some extremely unflattering results including with last years' Homens de Luta which failed to make it through to the final stages of the competition. Their choice of song is always crucial but they again everyone knows they can come up with very good quality entries. Will it be their time to shine next year? That is yet to be seen by stay tuned as escflashmalta will be keeping you updated!

Slovenia: A New Selection Method for 2012

As like the other thirteen (13) countries which confirmed their participation for next year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Baku, earlier today, Slovenia has joined the list. An exciting title has been given to their national selection named “Misija Evrovizija” which translates into “Mission Eurovision”, the same name used by the Spanish selections in the past couple of years..

“Misija Evrovizija”, will be hosted by none other Klemen Slakonja, the same presenter behind this years’ selection and rumors say that Maja Keuc, the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest representative will join him in hosting the show. It has also been noted down that the possibility of foreign songwriters is very much being considered but yet not confirmed at this stage.

Basically, “Misija Evrovizija” will be somewhat quite similar to the 2010 edition of Dora which is the Croatian national selection as well as the 2009 edition of the German national selection. This will be the pattern in which the song for the event will be selected. The whole show will end up with the final, titled (EMA 2012) where there, the nation will choose their representative. This show will kick off in autumn and end up with the final in February.

This year, Slovenia actuatlly did quite well considering that in the past three (3) years, the nation has failed to qualify. Their last qualification prior to this one in 2011, was back in 2007 when Alenka Gotar performed “Cvet z juga”. Maja Keuc and her song “No One” finished in the thirteenth (13th) position with 96 points and a very well-deserved third (3rd) in the semi. We’ll see where this show and this new system will lead Slovenia in the coming year as we head off to Baku.

The selection for the German Eurovision entry has already started! Earlier this week,  Das Erste, officially made an announcement. It seems that the Germans will be having the same format which leaded this country to very successful results.

The show will be named again Unser Star für… this time Baku. This show will be produced by Brainpool (A very well known German production company) and will take place in spring. Thomas D has been replaced instead of Stefan Raab cause he decided to withdraw. Raab stated "I'm very happy to hand over the jury leadership to to Thomas D. He brings everything that is needed in this role: entertainer qualities, eloquence, charm and of course a lot of musical experience. I'm sure that the young artists in the show will entrust themselves to him. He is also better looking than me!"

Thomas D is a well-known German artist who have been awarded the Echo award a total of five times. He stated "I've always wanted to be a president! Being part of this massive musical project is a fantastic task, which I am so excited about and which I take very seriously. I'm also better looking than Stefan Raab!".

Those interested in applying for this contest, can apply now. There will be the auditions which will be taking place in Köln which will be produced by Das Erste and Pro Sieben. Lena was the one who awarded the country, their last win back in 2010 with her simple song “Sattelite”. The same artist represented her country again this year where she finished a well-deserved 10th place with the song “Taken By A Stranger”. Can they win it again? We’ll see!

Malta: Promotional Video Out on Monday

This year’s Eurovision Song Contest representative for Malta will be none other than the confident and outgoing Glen Vella with his up-tempo song “One Life” written by Paul Giordimaina and Fleur Balzan. As one can notice, even from other countries’, by this time, many countries are getting well-prepared for Europe’s Favourite show happening on the 10th, 12th and 14th of May in Germany. And so is Malta.

The auditions for Glen’s video started about two weeks ago. And as a result of a hard-working team, “One Life” had been mixed and mastered in London where it was done in the metropolis studio. When the video’s out, we will be able to hear the final version of the song “One Life”. We also received the news that his backing team will be accompanying him in Düsseldorf.

The Public Broadcasting Services is working hard to make sure that Europe knows the song quite well before actually going to the event in May. One also has to note the fact that this year, Glen, had been promoted quite well already being in Portugal, Croatia and Greece. We also heard a rough edit of final version of Glen’s entry when he performed in the Greek National final.

The Video will be shown next Monday, the 14th of March on the official website which you can access here www.maltaeurovision2011.com at 20:01 with the minute signifying the title of the song 'One Life' . The video is under the control of none other than the (WE) ‘Where’s everybody?’ team who had already done the videos of the 2007 entry Vertigo by Olivia Lewis and 2008 with Morena’s song “Vodka”.

For more information regarding Glen’s journey to the Eurovision Song Contest, one should keep on following this website and www.maltaeurovision2011.com

Greece: Gerard James Borg Amongst Songwriters

Today at 12:00 CET, ERT aired the snippets of the songs which will be fighting to represent their country in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest set to take place in Dusseldorf, Germany. These snippets were premiered for the very first time on ERT’s Deftero programme 103.7.

Maltese lyricist Gerard James Borg made it through the Greek National final with the song “It’s all Greek To me” sung by Antigoni Psychriami. One has to note that Borg has already made it through for the Icelandic, Spanish and Maltese selections.

To listen all the songs, one have to wait till the 15th of February at 20:00 during a show which is presented by Lena Aroni. Aroni will also present the Greek national final held later on this month. The Greek broadcaster, ERT, announced these as the songs which each act will be performing on the final night of the competition:

01. Kokkina Halia - Come with me (Kokkina Halia / Andreas Galanopoulos)

02. Valanto Trifonos - The time is now (Ramström / Magnusson / Vuorinen)

03. Trihimitonio - Hamogela (Smile)  (Nikos Terzis / Vaggelis Konstantinidis)

04. Antigoni Psychrami - It's all Greek to me (Apostolos Psychramis / Dimitris S / Gerard J Borg)

05. Loukas Yorkas Feat. Stereo Mike - Watch my dance (Giannis Christodoulopoulos / Eleanna Vrahali)

06. Nikki Ponte - I don't wanna dance (Jonas Saeed / Pia Sjöberg)

You can listen to the clips in full just by clicking through this link here. We also have some returns like Nikos Terzis who already took part in the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1995. He also took part with Die For You back in 2001 and with Sakis’ song Shake it in 2004. Marrti Vuorinen was also behind the Finnish representative for the 2007 contest with the song Leave Me alone by Hanna Pakarinen and last but not least, don't forget the honourable Gerard James Borg who has already been mentioned. When contacted by ESCflashmalta, he stated that he was very "happy to have my work appreciated in other countries including my own!". We would like to wish him the very best of luck.

Spain: A Shortlist of Songs Announced

The three finalists fighting to represent their country in this year’s Eurovision Song contest taking place in Dusseldorf, Germany, are none other than: Melissa, Lucia Pérez and Auryn. The Spanish national final will be aired live on the 18th of February which is next Friday. The three (3) acts will sing a medley of  three (3) songs which have the potential of representing Spain.

So all this means that there will be a total of nine (9) entries. Those performances which will make it to the final will be chosen by an expert jury. Finally, the decidion of which act will go to Germany is up to the Spanish public. The show will be hosted by Anne Irgatiburu and Daniel Diges and will be hosted from the St.Cugat studios in the lovely city of Barcelona. One should also note the fact that some former eurovision composers are back into the ring and these are; Tony Sánchez Ohlsson and Thomas G:son (Spain 2007), Jesús  Cañadilla (Spain 2010), Rafael Artesero (Andorra 2005, 2006), Jonas Gladnikoff and Christina Schilling (Ireland 2009, 2010). The full list of who is performing what can be found below:

El sol brillará (Rafael de Alba)
Evangelyne (Kjell Jennstig, Dejan Belgrenius & Kristin Molin)
Volver (Primoz Poglajen, Jonas Gladnikoff, Camilla Gottschalck & Christina Schilling)

Lucía Pérez

Abrázame (Antonio Sánchez-Ohlsson & Thomas G.son)
C’est la vie! It’s allright (W&M, Nestor Geli, Susie Päivärinta, P. Andersson & M. Lindberg)
Que me quiten lo bailao (Rafael Artesero Herrero)

Diamonds (Nestor Geli, Susie Päivärinta, Pär Lönn)
Eos (Jesús Cañadilla & Alejandro de Pinedo)
Sueños rotos (Primoz Poglajen, Jonas Gladnikoff, Camilla Gottschalck, Christina Schilling)

It is quite unfortunate to note that the Maltese touch in the Spanish selection faced a dead end with the entry 'Golden Cadillac' failing to reach the shortlist of entries from the twenty that had been initially selected. Other notable local authors were also left out of the competition actually so one should not take this to heart. We would like to congratulate Gerard James Borg on making it to as far as four national finals this year being in Malta (highest placing being sixth), Iceland (finishing in second place), Spain and Greece and wish him the best of luck for the latter as the competition takes place in the coming weeks.

Ukraine: New Final to take Place

Last Saturday, the Ukrainian national selection for Eurovision was held. Today, two days after, a scandal has been shown. Anna Herman, a panelist in the jury, expressed her bad opinion regarding this year’s Ukrainian national selection. The singer itself claimed that she wants to perform a new song in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest held in Germany but it is unknown whether she will be able to do so.

NTU ( The Ukrainian national broadcaster ), just like last year, are facing a noisy-chaotic situation. Some participants in the contest also expressed their desire to cancel the results since in their opinion, they were invalid. Two named mentioned are none other than the hot-favourites of the night Jamala and Zlata Ognevich who were the first and second runners-up of the event. In a statement that Anna Herman made to the press this is what she had to say:

"I will initiate the creation of a special commission to examine the preparatory process and the very course of the final selection of candidates from Ukraine for Eurovision[...] I think it's worth to listen to the tens of thousands of people, that during these two days were ringing and expressed their dissatisfaction with the result of this competition. I have many doubts, but I would not want to disclose them before the decision of the commission, which I hope will be established and will give its findings. I would not want to blame anyone in advance, but my impression is that something was decided on the sidelines and not on the stage, which we do not understand and did not know".

There was also a petition created by the fans so as to delete and arrange the Ukrainian selection’s results. It is said that Jamala with her charming song “Smile” got more than 6000 phone numbers whilst the winner Mika Newton only got 2000. An official statement claimed by NTU is: "I think next year we will change the rule and will accept votes only from unique IP-addresses and phone numbers”

A letter has been sent by Mika Newton to the Ukrainian president in order to request their involvement in order to prove that the voting turned out well. She also expressed her wish to sing another song. Two songs have already written by one of the men who was responsible for Celine Dion’s well-known song “My Heart will go on” and she is still choosing which one to present. This man, is none other than, Walter Afanasieff. Will Ukraine choose another song ?!

UPDATE: The Ukrainian broadcaster will not let Mika Newton change her entry at this point in time although it should be noted that the arrangement will be changed but this will only happen through a re-vote which will be taking place next Thursday, 3rd March 2011 from 21:30 CET to 23:00 CET. The phone numbers will be released at the beginning of the broadcast in which the top three including Mika, Zlata and Jamala will be speaking about their entries so it is like a super-final.
