Throughout the years, Media.Link Communications has always sought to promote vocal talent of the future within the local music industry and therefore kept strengthening the Teenage Category within the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. Last night, Christine Haber and Mark Azzopardi hosted their last edition of the series Indifest organised by NET Television throughout the summer in anticipation of the local music event. Eight (8) entries were performed live in front of a four member panel of judges which included; Amber, Lyndsay, Olivia Lewis and Annalise Ellul. Their vote counted for 60% of the final result with the other 40% belonging to the public who had made their preferences public for the past ten weeks.

Brooke; Best Solo Artist at the Malta Music Awards in 2013, Glen Vella; a former Eurovision Song Contest representative on behalf of Malta and Sarah Bonnici; winner of the Teenage Category at last years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza were on hand as special guests of the programme alongside the resident dancing of Annalise Dance Studios. Whilst Mark Azzopardi and Christine Haber revealed the names of the three (3) finalists, they noted that all of the eight (8) participants will be performing on the Granaries Stage as part of an opening number where they will cover the song Try originally by P!nk.

Demgħa - Christian u Jasmine (Minik / Stephen Baldacchino)

Il-Ħolma - Jean Claude Azzopardi (Minik / Stephen Baldacchino)

Kliem Maġija - Kimberly u Lyann (Minik / Lyann)

It is quite intriguing to point out that the three (3) finalists all happen to the songs of the same composer, Minik who has an oustanding seven (7) songs competing in the Established Category and ten (10) in total when combining these. It is the first time that a songwriter has managed that many entries in just one year of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. The editorial team of escflashmalta.com would like to invite you to stay tuned within the next couple of days as the final interviews with artists competing in this years' edition will be published. In the meantime, if you haven't checked it out, we had the opportunity to speak to Danica Muscat earlier!

Media.Link Communications in collaboration with escflashmalta.com is proud to present the ninth week of the programme Indifest hosted by Mark Azzopardi and Christine Haber through NET Television on Thursday evening as from 20:30 CET onwards. In support of this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, the weekly programme seeks to promote the artists competing in one of three competitions which promote the local language. Whether newcomers or somewhat established, their place is still amongst the general elite. The public has the opportunity to select which three entries they would like to qualify from the 'teenage category' portion of the competition as well selecting their top favourite within the 'established category' which is offered as a separate award in order to make sure that talent is well appreciated.

All of the eight (8) entries competing in this years' teenage category will be competing for the votes of the judges this evening as a set of professional experts will be on hand within the studio to assess the performances by the respective participants. It is important to denote that all of the artists have already performed within Indifest this season in order to present their entries to the public who have also been voting. 40% of the final result which is set to be revealed this evening will have been decided by them with the other 60% decided by the expert panel. Therefore, people should continue to vote for their most favourite entries throughout the course of the programme in order to aid their preferred entry. Ultimately, three will garner the opportunity to perform 'live' during the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza which is taking place on the 19th September on The Granaries in Floriana.

In recent years, two senior members of the editorial team at escflashmalta.com were part of the committee behind the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza but a stunning three year experience, they have called it a day resorting to the promotion of the competition in the best possible way. The readers of the site have spoken highly of the comments passed on by professional members enlisted to review tracks for the Malta Eurovision Song Contest and the international showcase which just came to an end and thus it has been thought to introduce such a feature to a local competition.

There we are pleased to announce that all of the entries competing in this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza will be reviewed by Chris and Moira. The renowned duo are best known in the local music scene for representing Malta at the 1994 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest held in The Point Theatre in Dublin, Ireland. They finished in fifth place, the only time that the country managed that position as they sang their hearts out to the beautiful More than Love which they co-wrote. Chris & Moira have never shied away from a challenge and as a matter of fact, their recent material is best encompassed through a visionary set of genres, ones which are very much appreciated by the general public.

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is thought to be one of the finest musical institutions in the country noting that original tracks in Maltese are promoted. Some of the most recent winners of the esteemed competitions are none other than Amber, Mike Spiteri, Deborah C and Annabelle Debono with the most successful songwriters along the years being none other than Ray Agius, Mark Spiteri Lucas and Joe Chircop respectively. In recent years, the event has been supported greatly by escflashmalta.com with two board members present in the committee but for the first time in three years, coverage will be from an outsiders' point of view with the coverage being tweaked ever so slightly in order to promote the acts which will be selected.

The Committee of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza led by Chairman Mark Azzopardi received a total of seventy-nine (79) entries, from which eight (8) were submitted into the Teenage Category leaving the other seventy-one (71) in the Established Category. The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is one of the most prestigious music competitions in the country noting that it promotes original songs written in Maltese. Some of the finest examples of winners throughout the years have included Annabelle Debono, Miriam Christine, Mike Spiteri, Ira Losco, Claudia Faniello and Eleanor Cassar with the most successful songwriters being Mark Spiteri Lucas, Joe Chircop and Ray Agius respectively. In recent years, the event has been supported greatly by escflashmalta.com with two board members present in the committee but for the first time in three years, coverage will be from an outsiders' point of view with the coverage being tweaked ever so slightly in order to promote the acts which will be selected.

The top three of last years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza were Deborah C with Jekk Nużaw Moħħna, Marilena Gauci with Bl-Ikbar Serjetà and Domenique with Tama u Kuraġġ. Maltese, the national and co-official language of Malta and somewhat the most popular in terms of daily communication noting that English plays a major role within several roles of the work place and education amongst other things. Last night, this language was given utmost importance through the medium of song noting that nineteen (19) original tracks were presented to an audience to highlight the respective use in a competition known as L-Għanja tal-Poplu. This annual showcase will soon be turning forty and therefore has a vast heritage with ample followers, both from a musical and a lyrical point of view. The evening was conducted by Frank O'Neill, a former finalist as well as Valerie Vella, former host of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest. The event will be shown on ONE Television next Saturday but in the meantime, we can let you know the results of the evening nevertheless.

KulTural, winners of L-Għanja tal-Poplu in 2012 were the opening act last night as they reminded people what their entry Malta Tiegħi sounded like but nevertheless, the idea of having them open was well respected by the audience present as they joined the long list of winners to have graced the stage along the years. The organisation was spectacular and the respective committee alongside Robert Cefai and Norman Hamilton as representatives of the World Association for Festivals and Artists deserve all of the possible praise. The interval act as people awaited the final results was offered by a flamenco dance group known as Alegria and the finalists themselves who performed a medley of well known songs.

The committee has always been proud to recognise the talent of local artists and therefore, a special award was given to Sunny Aquilina, lyricist of The One That I Love and My Dream for his contribution to the local music scene. The committee have always put a lot of emphasis on the language and therefore, lyrics are always of the essence in this competition and this was seen within the choice of the jury for the evening, composed of scholars within the linguistics and literary field. Nevertheless, other individuals from the music and television industry who were present were none other than Joe Vella, the Radio 101 Disc Jockey and former Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza judge along with Tony Cassar Darien, a brilliant actor known for several roles on television and the stage.

  • Best New Talent: Taħnina - Fiona Camilleri (Robert Carbonaro)
  • Best Singer/Songwriter - Sylvan Borg for Il-Maltin Bil-Politika Mehdijin
  • Best Social Theme: Virtwali - Estelle Fenech Imbroll (Paul Attard / Mark Scicluna)
  • Best Interpretation Award: Kuluri, Lwien - X-Tend (Charles Dalli)
  • Third Place: Pupazz - Rita Pace (Rita Pace / Emil Calleja Bayliss)
  • Second Place: Signor Si - Dorothy Muscat (Sammy Galea / Joe Julian Farrugia)
  • First Place: Hawn Siġġu Nieqes - Cherise Attard (Mark Spiteri Lucas / Paul Ellul)

Congratulations to all of the winners of the awards on Saturday evening but also to the other competitors. The editorial team at escflashmalta.com would like to send their special wishes to none other than Emil Calleja Bayliss who wrote the lyrics to two entries performed during the evening, one being Għal Dejjem performed by Marie Claire Attard Bason to the tune of Mark Scicluna and the other one being Pupazz performed by Rita Pace who also composed the music. The latter was the recipient of the second runner-up position. It is surely another stepping stone.

First rehearsals for this years' edition of the L-Għanja tal-Poplu competition took place within the Sir Temi Żammit Hall on Thursday evening amidst tension surroundings noting that the University of Malta campus was going through council elections but nevertheless, the stage is seemingly set for another stunning showcase tomorrow night. The themes for this years' competing songs are extremely varied but it has to be noted that there are a couple of similarities in themes such as marriage and corruption for example. We do not intend to release any details of the genres or the performances themselves because the show will eventually be shown on television at a later date but we can indeed promise you that there will surely be a couple to your liking.

During the past weekend, Sir Temi Żammit Hall was filled with laughter as the Student's Fest took place under the hospice of the University of Malta Council. This weekend, it will be quite different with live music and original songs in Maltese taking centre stage. It is important to note that this years' quality is very much in the range of the previous year and given the mixture between newcomers and established performers, one could say that the first phase jury did a splendid job in their respective selection. They also noted that it was difficult to let some of the songs go especially because they felt like they had a special something in either the lyrics, the music or the vocals of a particular individual.
