The Mediterranean Sea has been a precious gem according to a hefty amount of people and it does not seem to be letting go of such a title actually but what it does contain in it are a number of nations, amongst which one finds the Maltese Islands which in turn holds the highest regards in the music industry noting the amount of up and coming talent that is gracing our nation. A local showcase which had started way back in 1983 under the title 'Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza' has maintained its dignity and managed success bringing out some of the best singers from the abyss with songs within the national language. Over time, the winners of the annual music competition have gone onto success also within the Eurovision Song Contest reaching top ten placings apart from attracting some foreign attention.

This years' competition is actually one of the most interesting and this is due to the fact that it is the 20th Edition and therefore the organizers are doing their absolute best in order to present the showcase. We have decided to take a closer look at the participants in this years' competition as we aim to give them the best possible exposure. The second batch of entrants which will be seen within this article are relative newcomers to the 'Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza' but they might not be that much of up and coming in terms of the entertainment industry. They will be fighting it out with the other acts mentioned earlier this week. This years' final will be taking place on Monday, 19th September 2011 at the Floriana Granaries and will be featuring seating for the very first time as well as special guests including Glen Vella.

The first participant in the draw and singing in position number #1 will be none other than the flamboyant Deborah C who has managed to grow into an artist throughout the years following her performances on television including 'Ħadd Għalik'. She is still very much remember from the first time that she competed in the 'Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza' when she had performed the song 'Pandora'. This year, she has decided to mark her return to the competition following a years' absence with the song 'Fjamma' which is composed by Philip Vella and penned by Gerard James Borg, the same team behind her debut entry within this competition and a team which represented Malta during half of the past decade within the Eurovision Song Contest.

Moving onto position number #2, one which is considered unlucky in the Eurovision Song Contest but bears no real significance here. The singer is a complete newcomer to the scene but does not really need that much of an introduction thanks to her family background. Singing the song which bears the name 'Int Biss' will be Valentina Farrugia who is the daughter of renowned lyricist Joe Julian Farrugia who penned the lyrics alongside his regular musical partner Paul Abela. The duo has been known for their work with the trio Trilogy who took part within the Eurosong competition a total of three times, doing well on all occasions.

The next upcoming artist comes in position number #4 in the form of Norbert Bondin who has an interesting repertoire of vocal skills and is quickly emerging as a star within the music industry. He was a late entrant within this competition noting that the song that he will be performing entitled 'Int Tkun Hemm' composed by and penned by Philip Vella was not originally his but to one of his dearest friends, Danica Muscat whom funnily enough will be following him on the night noting that she has also made it with the finalists this year. He has been making a lot of television appearances in recent months and the viewers will definitely recognize the voice and the look.

As already mentioned, singing after Norbert will be none other than one of his closest friends in the form of the renowned Danica Muscat who seriously needs no introduction. The young musical prodigy has already shows she has a large set of lungs on a number of occasions with the most striking coming very early in her career as she performed the song 'Stolen' within the Junior Eurosong edition of 2007 which seems so long ago especially now that the artist has grown. She gained nationwide fame after being selected to take part within the competition 'Io Canto' in Italy where she competed for a number of months. She might be the first of a number of artists as later on today, the popular magazine Gwida will reveal the second artist to headline within the show. Danica Muscat will be performing the song 'Kliem Li M'Għedtlek Qatt' composed by Marco Debono and penned by Christopher Azzopardi in position number #5 on the night.

Newcomers are essentially a very important part of the competition and the next artist might be an emerging vocal talent. Having submitted her entry last year making it with the last batch prior to the shortlist. This year, she caught a lucky break as our judges believe she deserved her chance to compete within the competition. Singing the song 'Kif Nista?' composed and penned by Philip Vella will be none other than Ana-Maria Grima who is actually part of the well known enKor choir which also used to feature none other than former Eurovision Song Contest representative Thea Garrett in recent years whilst also being part of the talent show ID aired on ONE Television. The young artist will be taking to the stage in position number #6.

Up next is another relative newcomer to the scene but her history with the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is somewhat much more evident and this is due to the fact that she was one of the participants in the 'Talent Żagħżugħ' portion last year actually which featured a total of fifteen acts. I am speaking about none other than Albertine u l-Qamħa who will be performing 'Skont Id-Daqqa Ż-Żifna' composed by Dominic Cini and penned by Giovann Attard. Unfortunately she did not make the final cut last year but she still made the competition this year with some of the best artists in the local music industry therefore, success can be reached in various roles. She will be performing in position number #8 on the final night.

What a repertoire of upcoming artists this year but the next artist is quickly becoming one of the most popular artists in Malta still needing that extremely large break within the biggest musical competition in Malta. I am speaking about none other than Janice Mangion who has been in the Summer Hit Song Contest on a number of occasions already whilst also managing to make it to the final round of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza even last year with the song 'Intlaqt Mal-Mewġ', a ballad in the vein of her entry this year which bears the title 'Eternità' composed by Mark Scicluna and penned by singer/songwriter Rita Pace. The first time that the singer appeared on television was a couple of years back during the reality television show 'L-Isfida' where she was coached by three time Eurovision Song Contest representative, Chiara.

Just after this entry, at position number #11, an interesting concept and one which will feature one of the two trios in this years' Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. This is the female one though and features three sisters who did not come up with any time for their group and are therefore calling themselves according to their names which are Charlotte, Luisana and Nadine. They are well known as being the daughters of the late Sammy Bartolo who was of course, the lead vocalist within the group, New Cuorey known for hits such as 'L-Aħħar Bidwi F'Wied Il-Għasel' amongst others. In the meantime, this is Luisana's second time noting her appearance with the song 'Kif Jista Jkun' last year. This year, along with her sisters, she will be performing the song 'Liberì' written by Philip Vella.

Despite needing no apparent introduction, the next artist is making her debut in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza whilst also making only her second appearance as a performer within the music scene. She has built a reputation as a host on ONE Television over time even hosting one of the most popular shows under the name 'Singled Out' but what was surprising in a way was seeing her make it to the finals of the Malta Eurosong competition in 2010 and not only that but then finishing in an astounding third position behind Thea Garrett and Glen Vella. The song 'Words Are Not Enough' was composed by John David Zammit and penned by Paul Callus, the same people behind her entry in this contest entitled 'Kollox Mill-Qalb'. She will definitely be hoping for more success.

As a young individual, Marilena Gauci always showed promise noting her appearances within the Junior Eurosong competition prompting her to victory along with her colleagues of The Young Talent Team. She still recalls this experience as being one of the best in her career but the young artist who has just turned nineteen has had many accolades to her repertoire managing the finals of this years' Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the song 'He's A Demon' and also winning an international music competition held in Alexandria, Egypt. Therefore, this will be yet another experience to add to the list as she takes the song 'Dil-Qalb Kbira' composed by Philip Vella and penned by Joe Chircop up to the stage on the 19th September 2011.

One of the final two acts which will be mentioning is another one who had past experience within the annual Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza noting that she has managed to be part of the Talent Żagħżugħ portion in the past with the song 'Tikk Tokk' but people would definitely remember Marilena Farrugia also from the Opportunity 2 Challenge which saw two entries make it to the semi-final stage of the Malta Song for Europe in 2007. In fact, there she performed a song entitled 'Life' which she wrote herself but growing older has meant the world for the young artist as she has developed a stage presence and a brilliant look to present the song 'Kien Ftit Wisq' composed by Elton Zarb and penned by singer/songwriter Ally, a team which she has worked with on quite a number of occasions.

The final act which we would like to present to you is none other than another growing in popularity type artist in the form of Anna Azzopardi who made it to the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza just months after making the semi-finals of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the song 'Unfaithful' which did go down well. She is also well known for being a part of the Choir Animae which also features renowned performers Glen Vella, Debbie Scerri, Pamela and Petra Zammit amongst others. The song which she will be performing during this years' edition is entitled 'Agħtini Idejk' composed by Renato Briffa and penned by Alfred E Baldacchino. The song will be performed in position number #19 during the course of the evening.

The climax of the summer season within the music industry is surely the annual edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, a hugely anticipated music competition due to the fact that the presented songs are based within the national language of Maltese. Over the years, acts that have taken part would go on to represent Malta in a variety of musical showcases all over the world including the Golden Stag in Romania and the annual Eurovision Song Contest. Finding success in foreign waters is not easy but one has to remind himself that doing well on a national scale is always a strong basis. This year, the local showcase will be celebrating twenty years since it's premier edition and the organizers are working hard to make sure it is the best edition ever complimenting the anniversary.

In the past couple of months, we have been following the tele-voting process all the way in both respective categories. Within the Teenage Talent which features acts aged from fourteen (14) to twenty-six (26), the role of the public vote is very much important and this is because it owes up to fifty per cent (50%) to the final result which will see a total of three acts making it to The Granaries within the city of Floriana where they will get to perform as part and parcel of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. In due time, the acts which take part within this category may also find fame as seen within the past in the form of Domenique Azzopardi who was in the competition last year finishing in the runner-up position and then making it to the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2011. Other acts which have reached success from past editions include Albertine, Valentina and Marilena Farrugia who are all competing with the established category this year. Below you can see the current placings for this category but of course, things can still change. We would like to notify that voting for this portion will close on Sunday 11th at 23:59 CET.

The hourglass continues to lose sand as the time rolls by and summer is passing by extremely quickly in my opinion this year and that is quite unfortunate because it is the time when music is given the most utter important so to speak especially within the Maltese Islands noting that the influx of tourists are enchanted by the local talent. In the past three weeks, the first three programmes of this years' edition of Indifest took place and with a different backdrop than the last couple of years, it seems like the special significance of the year will be quite noticeable when one remembers that this will be the 20th Edition of the annual Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. Over the years, success has been perceived on both national and international scale for the local artists who do their best to prove themselves worthy within their field as vocalists. The ever growing significance of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest and the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza has also been proven by the amount of submitted entries in recent years. One of the singers who has been consistent within the industry has surely been Glen Vella who most recently represented Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song 'One Life' composed by Paul Giordimaina and penned by Fleur Balzan. The renowned performer will be a special guest at this years' edition of the local musical showcase.

The Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza is a prestigious event which features some of the top local acts, all competing for the coveted title. This year is even more special as the winner will be the twentieth winner overall and we all know that when it is a special celebration, normally every five years, the edition is somewhat organized in a special manner and each and every participant would like to be a part of that. Amongst the people in this years' competition as featured during our first part of the a three part biographical issue on the artists, there are former Eurovision Song Contest representative Mike Spiteri, as well as former Malta Eurosong participants, Rita Pace, Dario Bezzina, Mark Tonna, Neville Refalo, Christian Arding, Nadine Axisa, Fiona Cauchi, Audrey Marie and Klinsmann Coleiro amongst others.

Glen Vella, who last participated within the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza with the song 'Kuntent' in 2009 will not be the only guest to be performing during the show though so stay tuned for more information within the coming hours as we reveal the second special guest of the show which will take place on Monday 19th September 2011 on the Granaries in Floriana. We would like to remind you that this year, noting the special anniversary, part of the festival will be enclosed with a seating plan and this will be absolutely FREE of CHARGE on a first come, first serve basis. One of the most popular music competitions in Malta came to an end last week when the annual 'Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza' was staged on the Granaries in Floriana for the twentieth time. For the very first time since the inception of the competition, the people viewing the competition could have opted to sit down by obtaining tickets from Media.Link Communication in the days leading up to the event. All of the tickets were given away and the feel of a concert was clearly felt by the competitors who stated that this innovation proved to be successful noting that in the past, people tended to get tired and leave as they would get tired. At the end of the evening, Mike Spiteri was the winner with the song 'B'Rieda tal-Azzar' written by the veteran Ray Agius. Today, through the final programme on Indifest, one will be seeing behind the scenes footage from the event.

The show will be hosted by Charles and Elaine Saliba, the pleasant couple who have kept you company all through the summer but they will be joined by an array of people on the show today. In fact, the first two acts who will be present are none other than the winner of the Teenage Category in the form of Angelica Portelli who took to the stage with the song 'Ejjew Nieqfu' composed by Miriam Christine and penned by Joe Chircop as the winner of the tele-voting in the Established Category who is Deborah C known for performing the song 'Fjamma' composed by Philip Vella and penned by Gerard James Borg. It goes without saying that the top three of the established category will also be on hand this evening with the second runner-up being Janice Mangion who performed the song 'Eternità' composed by Mark Scicluna with lyrics by Rita Pace, the first runner-up being Albertine with her group 'Il-Qamħa' and their song 'Skont Id-Daqqa Iż-Żifna' composed by Dominic Cini and penned by Giovann Attard, who in turn will also be present and last but not least the winning team of Mike Spiteri who will be joined by the winning songs' writer Ray Agius on the programme.

The features of the behind the scenes from the 'Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza' were done by James Xuereb who is surely familiar with the viewers for his one-on-one interviews during the whole series where we got to know more about the respective participants in this years' competition. For one final time, we would also like to give a round of applause to the Vogue Dancers who will be performing one last signature dance to the tune of 'Yassou Maria' by Sarbel who represented Greece in the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest held in Helsinki, Finland.
