In recent days, the town of Sliema was marking International Literacy Day as part of a brand new project kick started by the government in order to encourage reading especially to the younger generations whose life has somewhat been gobbled up by technology. Aiding proceedings and appointed as Reading Ambassadors were none other than former Eurovision Song Contest representatives; Kurt Calleja, Gianluca and Ira Losco. Their support to the initiative is vital because they are individuals in the public eye and thus have a certain following.

Kurt Calleja, who represented Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012 with the track This Is The Night which he co-wrote with Johan Jämtberg and Mikael Gunnerås has just unveiled his debut album, Love on Mars, Gianluca just released his debut album Waiting for Tomorrow following his eighth place finish at the prestigious international competition with the track Tomorrow co-written by Boris Cezek and Dean Muscat whilst Ira Losco who honoured her nation at the 2002 international spectacle with 7th Wonder composed by Philip Vella to the lyrics of Gerard James Borg is currently promoting the track Me Luv u Long Time, the third single off her sixth studio album, The Fire.

Both the male and the female vocalist took to the stage to share their love of reading, conveying a message of how one could enter a different world whilst educating oneself with what is being published. It is also important to denote that whilst Ira Losco suggested the book 'Goggle Eyes' written by Anne Fine, Kurt Calleja suggest the series 'Harry Potter' written by celebrated author JK Rowling. It has also been acknowledged that more reading ambassadors will be revealed in due course, including ones from the entertainment industry.
